IN THE NEWS Coast Guard cutter helps fishermen off Cape Cod
|

Source: Military.com-- The Coast Guard assisted a Boston-based fishing crew after their boat became disabled 30 miles east of Chatham, Mass.
The crew of five aboard the Miss Lindsey II radioed Coast Guard
Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Mass., at 3:15 a.m., and
reported they were adrift and suspected a head gasket had blown in the
80-foot trawler's engine.
The sector issued a radio broadcast asking any nearby vessels to
assist. After getting no response, they directed the 270-foot Coast
Guard Cutter Spencer, based in Boston, to make way toward the Miss
Lindsey II and tow it to Provincetown, Mass.

IN THE NEWS Japanese sailor to embark on world's longest wave-powered voyage
|

Source: The International Herald Tribune-- Kenichi Horie, who has crossed the Pacific in a solar-powered boat
made of recycled aluminum, is getting ready for his next solo adventure.
The 69-year-old Japanese sailor will set out March 16 on what he says will be the world's longest voyage in a wave-powered boat.
Speaking Tuesday through a translator at the Hawaii Yacht Club,
Horie said he would travel more than 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers)
from Honolulu to Japan aboard a 3-ton yacht called the Suntory Mermaid
II at a speed of up to 5 knots.
The boat made of recycled aluminum relies on the energy of waves to
move two fins at its bow and propel it forward. Horie said it is a
sturdy vessel, designed to right itself if it capsizes. But it is
equipped with an engine and a 35-foot (11-meter) sail mast for
emergencies.
The journey - which would take a diesel-powered boat about 10 days
to complete - is expected to take Horie about 2.5 months. He will take
along rice, canned food and microwaveable meals. And beer.

IN THE NEWS Film about maritime disaster draws millions of viewers
|
|
Source:DW-World.de-- Millions of Germans tuned in to a television
film about the 1945 sinking of a Nazi ship full of refugees in the Baltic,
which cost 9,000 lives and surpassed the Titanic as the worst maritime disaster
in modern times.
"Die Gustloff," a two-part multi-million euro
movie shown on German state broadcaster ZDF, was the most-watched TV program on
Sunday, March 2, with 8.45 million people tuning in. The second half of the
three-hour film will be broadcast on Monday evening.
The "Wilhelm Gustloff" had been built to hold
1,500 passengers. The 209 metre-long (685 feet) ship, named after the
assassinated head of the Swiss Nazi party, was launched in 1937 and conceived
as a cruise liner for the Nazis' leisure organisation Kraft durch Freude, or
"strength through joy." Once war broke out, it was used by the
German military.

IN THE NEWS Newport to Open Arms to Cruising Sailors |
|
Source: CruisingWorld.com-- For the Newport Armory, a long-forgotten structure smack-dab on Thames
Street downtown, is now in the earliest stages of being overhauled into
a facility called the Newport Maritime Center, aimed primarily for
cruisers. It sounds too good to be true: a welcome center within
walking distance to everything with dinghy docks, showers, laundry,
temporary storage lockers, a lounge with Internet access and local
information, a base for a harbor shuttle, the works. And the funding is
secured to get it under way.

IN THE NEWS Novice sailor's 1,000-day record bid cut short by seasickness
|

Source: The Guardian-- Like all epic voyages it was plagued by difficulties: a damaged
vessel, limited diet, exhaustion. But Soanya Ahmad's 1,000-day voyage
was finally defeated - only a third of the way through - by the most
predictable of ailments: seasickness.
The 24-year-old set out
with her boyfriend, Reid Stowe, 56, last April intending to sail around
the world for 1,000 days without touching land. They hoped to smash the
657-day record set by the Australian yachtsman Jon Sanders, who
circumnavigated the globe three times between 1986 and 1988. "It
was such a hard decision to make," said Ahmad, after landing back in
New York on Friday, having left the 21-metre yacht off Australia late
last month. "We'd been through so much." Click Here to Read Article |

IN THE NEWS Sailing Hall hits rough waters
|

Source: HometownAnnapolis.com-- As the debate over the proposed location
for the National Sailing Hall of Fame continues, the Maryland
Historical Trust weighed in last week, calling the 69 Prince George St.
site an "unsuitable location."
In a letter to the
Department of Natural Resources Wednesday, J. Rodney Little, director
of the Trust, recommended the DNR not transfer the lease of the
building, currently housing the Natural Resources Police, to the
National Sailing Hall of Fame. According to the trust, the
size and program scope of the proposed museum is too much for the site.
Instead, they request a more modest project to incorporate the historic
waterfront property. |
