Yacht marooned near Key West since '05 has been freed

News reports out of Key West this week indicate that the infamous megayacht Legacy, which has been marooned in a Florida wildlife refuge since Hurricane Wilma in 2005 has been towed out of the seagrass and is now docked in Key West.  The saga of this yacht has been widely covered by the press in the past few years as the yacht's owner, Peter Halmos, and crew lived aboard the stranded yacht to ward off pirates, thieves and sightseers.

MCA cautions Yachtmasters about internet fraud

Police have cautioned a 29-year-old woman after she chartered a yacht off the south-coast using a sailing certificate she had downloaded from Facebook.

The charter company, based near Dorset, required to see a valid MCA/RYA Yachtmaster Certificate - one of the UK's highest sailing qualifications - before leasing a vessel. The 29-year-old found an image of the certificate on the social networking site Facebook, which she then doctored and reproduced, claiming it was a photocopy of the genuine document.

Captain Andrew Phillips of the MCA Enforcement Unit did stress, however, that there were real dangers associated with social networking sites, and asked that seafarers never publish copies of their certification online: "If you have already done so then you are strongly advised to remove them immediately."

Alaskan fishing boat limping back to Dutch Harbor after fire

The Pacific Glacier, the Seattle-based fishing vessel that caught fire Tuesday evening north of the Aleutians, could return to Seattle by next week for repairs, its owner said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which started around 7:30 p.m. and appeared to be confined to the ship's laundry room. It forced the evacuation of about 90 crew members, said John Bundy, president of Seattle-based Glacier Fish Co.

Coast Guard officials will meet the ship, which was scheduled to return to Dutch Harbor early Thursday, to investigate.

French wine "on sail"

French vineyard owners are returning to a slower pace of life by starting to export their wine by sailing boat - a method last used in the 1800s - to reduce their carbon footprint.

The three-mast barque Belem, which was launched in 1896, the last French merchant sailing vessel to be built, will sail into Dublin after a voyage from Bordeaux that should last about four days.  The wines will be delivered to Bordeaux by barge using the Canal du Midi and Canal du Garonne, which run across southern France from Sete in the east, via Beziers in Languedoc.

Each bottle will be labelled: "Carried by sailing ship, a better deal for the planet."

"Cleanest Ship" demonstrates clean shipping technology

Inland navigation is safe and environmentally friendly. On average, CO2 emissions of an inland vessel are only 1/3 of the ones a truck emits per ton-kilometre (tkm), due to higher energy efficiency. However, SOX emissions are actually much higher than the ones resulting from road transport, even when related to tkm. The Cleanest Ship Project, a project in co-operation with energy com-
pany BP, shows how inland navigation can improve its environmental performance.
