Tanker damages Ambrose Light

High winds off Sandy Hook, N.J., may have been one factor causing a 799-foot tanker to sideswipe Ambrose Light, crippling the beacon and perhaps ending its long history of guiding ships to New York Harbor.

The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating why the ship's crew didn't report the collision for almost seven hours.

The Coast Guard said the inbound Bahamas-flagged Axel Spirit was approaching Ambrose Channel at 0200 Nov. 3 when the incident happened. That morning, the region was experiencing severe weather caused by Tropical Storm Noel.

Winds were 20 to 25 knots, with 4- to 5-foot seas, the Coast Guard said. Axel Spirit's crew reported no malfunctions in navigation or steering systems.

Axel Spirit was on its way to a Chevron terminal in Perth Amboy, N.J., when it struck Ambrose Light. The 76-foot-high steel structure, also known as Ambrose Tower, is 12 miles southeast of Staten Island, N.Y.

The mate on a nearby pilot launch noticed that the light wasn't working properly and notified the Coast Guard at 0315. Axel Spirit interests didn't report the incident until 0850, the Coast Guard said. The ship is owned and operated by Teekay Corp.

Canadian tug & barge back at sea after onboard fire
A Canadian-flagged tug and barge vessel was back at sea Sunday after a fire onboard the barge late Thursday night injured two of its crew members.

The 136-foot integrated tug and barge Everlast left Portland's Ocean Gateway terminal Saturday night on its way to North Carolina, according to Sharon Machon, a civilian working with the U.S. Coast Guard at the Sector Office. Coast Guard officials were still investigating the cause of Thursday night's fire in the pump room on the barge portion of the vessel.

The Coast Guard received a distress call from the vessel at about 10:15 p.m. Thursday reporting the fire while the Everlast was about 20 miles off the coast of Rockland near Matinicus Rock.

Coast Guard crews responded in one 47-foot and two 110-foot patrol boats. A Coast Guard helicopter also responded to the scene and airlifted the two crew members, who both suffered second- and third-degree burns on their hands and faces. One of the men also was burned on his legs.

Saddam's yacht up for sale

The sale of the 269-foot Ocean Breeze, built for Saddam Hussein and docked on the French Riviera, could be thwarted, however, if Iraq can prove it belongs to someone in the late dictator's entourage - and now, therefore, to the government in Baghdad.

A court hearing will likely be held in March to determine the rightful owner.  The government in Baghdad suspects the yacht, which French authorities seized on Jan. 31, is still Iraqi. But the posh yacht brokerage firm Nigel Burgess says other owners, whom it will not name, have asked it to sell the vessel. The price has reportedly been set at $35 million.

Viewing is strictly forbidden, but several photos of the interior on the Internet site of Nigel Burgess show an opulent Middle East-style decor in blue and gold hues that match the azure sea at sunset.

Coast Guard continues search for missing cruise ship crew

The Coast Guard resumed its search at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, for a 28-year-old Chinese crewmember from the Celebrity cruise ship  Constellation after cruise ship staff informed the Coast Guard of video surveillance showing the man going overboard.

The Coast Guard initially suspended its search at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday, but after receiving information of video surveillance at 7:30 a.m., the Coast Guard search and rescue coordinators to resume the search and launched an HC-130 aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, Fla.

The Coast Guard's search efforts now include the coast off Cape Canaveral, Fla., due to the northern drift of the currents associated in the Gulf Stream and the amount of time the man has been in the water.
