IN THE NEWS Around the world in a 10' boat?
|
339 days until the start of the Around in Ten, singlehanded around the world yacht race in... 10 foot boats. The goal is to beat the record set in 1987 by Serge Testa in his 11'10" boat Acrohc Australis (pictured). The four entrants are each building their tiny boats and are faced with the challenge of constructing the most seaworthy vessel of its size as the boats are too small to carry liferafts.

IN THE NEWS Blizzard and severe storms batter British coast

A number of salvage companies are looking at
recovering a trawler which ran aground on rocks on St Kilda, off the coast of Scotland the
Maritime and Coastguard Agency said. The incident was one of several groundings to take place as blizzards, whipped up by winds of up to 70 mph, continued to lash northern parts of Britain. The cargo ship Riverdance, carrying containers of melons and bananas was hit by a freak wave which caused 60 containers to be lost overboard and the ship to list dangerously as injured crew and passengers were airlifted to safety. IN THE NEWS US Sailor found dead, yacht aground in Mexico
|
 A 78 year old California man was found dead in southern Mexico after
his yacht ran aground near shore, the U.S. Embassy said Sunday. The
bruised body of a man believed to be John J. Long, of Alameda, California, was
found floating Saturday afternoon by his sailboat near the town of
Puerto Madero, just north of Mexico's border with Guatemala, embassy
spokeswoman Judith Bryan said. It was unclear how Long died or
why the vessel ran aground. Bryan said he sent a distress signal from
the boat "Culin," which bore Irish, Mexican and U.S. flags. The U.S.

IN THE NEWS Pirates capture tug and Russian, British crew off of Somali coast
|
On February, 1 in the Bay of Aden near the coast of Somalia
pirates captured the tugboat "Switzer Korsakov", en route to the island of Sakhalin. It
seems that the vessel was captured for the purpose of ransom. A SOS signal about an attack of pirates was sent at 13:17 on Friday. The crew are reported as safe and negotiations to secure the safe return of the vessel and crew are ongoing.
