Crew battles to save boat en route to Key West Race Week
The crew of the Farr 37 Hot Ticket were en route to Key West from Kemah, TX when they lost their rudder in heavy seas and high winds.  The rudder loss resulted in a 4" hole in the hull and an estimated 400-500 gallons of water poured into the boat.  The crew activated their EPIRB and the Coast Guard responded and offered to drop a pump to assist the crew, but were unable to do so in the deteriorating conditions.  The crew managed to stabilize the Hot Ticket and she was towed in to Key West where arrangements were being made to get the boat repaired in time for the start of Race Week.

At issue is whether barges passing through Buzzards Bay must be escorted by tugboats. Local lawmakers and environmentalists say that is the safest option, and it is what state regulations require.  But a US Coast Guard regulation that went into effect Nov. 23 allows double-hulled oil tankers to transit Buzzards Bay without a tugboat escort.
