Ambassadors In Action
Pace Academy: Ambassadors For L.E.A.D.

C.J. Stewart, Lisa Epstein, Brett Epstein, Brandon Thomas, Patti ThomasBrandon Thomas and Brett Epstein, Pace Academy baseball players, rallied their student body to support L.E.A.D.'s mission of developing outstanding student-athletes and citizens. Brandon and Brett both understand the vital role that access to training plays relative to earning a scholarship and competing at the college level. As a result of the investment that both families were able to make towards their sons  baseball development, Brandon will be attending Georgia Tech on a baseball scholarship (in addition to being a 2009 draft prospect) and Brett is pursuing his goal of competing as a student-athlete at Vanderbilt University. The players along with help from their moms, Patti Thomas and Lisa Epstein, hosted several fundraisers that offered the students and faculty at Pace an opportunity to support L.E.A.D. The fundraiser concluded with a raffle on April 17th at the dedication ceremony of the new Pace Academy Field - Charlie Owens Field. Up for grabs were exclusive Turner Field Suntrust section tickets to the opening series Braves v. Yankees game on June 23rd (courtesy of Stan Conway/Majestic Realty) and several memorabilia items from Tom Smoltz, Jeremy Hermida, Mark Derosa and Jason Heyward (courtesy of Career Sports & Marketing Entertainment).  Pace's tremendous efforts raised over $1000 for the L.E.A.D. program. Thank you to the Thomas and Epstein families, the Pace Baseball team, the student body and our sponsors; you all are truly champions for inner city baseball!

Spotlight On...
Jason Heyward - Atlanta Braves

Jason Heyward - Atlanta Braves OutfielderJust who is Jason Heyward? If you know your baseball you'd know that he is an Atlanta native from McDonough, Georgia, a beloved son, brother and friend - and one heck of a baseball player. Jason has had a great spring training season and he's excited about the '09 regular season. Before he headed to the field one day, Jason took some time to chat with L.E.A.D.'s CEO, C.J. Stewart.:

C.J.: You've been very successful in baseball, at the amateur and professional levels. Did you and your family have to make any kinds of sacrifices (time, money, social life, etc.) in order to achieve this success?

Jason: - We definitely had to make sacrifices as far as time goes. My dad works in Warner Robbins and we live in McDonough, so he would drive sometimes an hour and 15 minutes each way to come home from work and take me to practice in East Cobb or wherever I was playing. It was a financial sacrifice too, since baseball can be an expensive sports to play. But mostly, the time and work were the biggest challenges.

C.J.: You have been an avid supporter of L.E.A.D. and just recently joined the organization's Pro Players Board. Why is this cause so important to you?

Jason: For me, the best thing about the L.E.A.D. program is that it isn't only about baseball. Baseball is used as a platform to build on in order for kids to transition from high school to college and on with their lives, especially kids who wouldn't otherwise be able to do that financially. L.E.A.D. helps kids go on to have successful careers, whether they are in baseball or not.

C.J.: When can fans expect to see you at Turner Field?

Jason: Hopefully you'll see me at Turner Field as soon as possible. It's hard to say exactly when, but if I keep working hard, hopefully my childhood dream of playing at Turner Field will come true soon. Growing up in the Atlanta area and watching the Braves my whole life, it's a blessing and an honor to be able to put on an Atlanta Braves jersey.

Jason is currently with the Atlanta Braves Myrtle Beach Club.
