We are in the midst of a serious overhaul of our website. We are hoping to be operational at sandwichmothersclub.org again soon. In the meantime we do have sandwichmothersclub.com up and running although still in need of serious updating. By the end of this week most of the updating should be complete on the .com site and once we are up 100% a message will go out to the whole group.

Thank you for your patience!

SMC VP Communications
Greetings!

The SMC Board works hard each year to plan events for members and their families.  When events cost money, an effort is made to keep those costs to a minimum.  In many cases, the Club subsidizes events to keep them affordable.  Our operating budget is made up primarily from two income sources-membership dues and newsletter sponsors.

Because we depend so heavily on membership dues, it is necessary to expect members to renew at the start of the SMC "year", which has traditionally been September.  While new members can join at any time, any members from the 2009-10 year who have not renewed by the end of September will be removed from the Club roster.  This includes the Google Group.  If a former member renews after that time, she will be added to the membership roster and included in the Google Group if she would like.

You are always welcome to mail your registration form and a check to the SMC PO Box.  Additionally, you will have the opportunity to pay in person at the August 29th family event at Adventure Playgroup.  Finally, you may bring your membership dues to Hemisphere for our Kick Off Moms Meeting on September 30th.  In the near future, online registration will be available again from the website via paypal - we will send out a constant contact update when this feature is operational.

Kid Friendly Events

Crow Farm

The kids will get a tour of Crow Farm, and will be able to pick an apple from the orchard and a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. Farmer Paul will answer questions during the tour.

Two dates and times have been scheduled:

Tuesday, October 5th

10-11am

4-5pm

Wednesday, October 6th

10 - 11 am

4-5pm

FEE: $3 per child

This event is perfect for toddlers - elementary children. Infants are welcome of course, just keep in mind that it is a walking tour on farm land, so an "all-terrain" stroller would be best (not one with small wheels) or back pack, sling.

Email Katie Gelinas at katiet0513@yahoo.com to sign up or sign up at the Kick Off Meeting!  If you email Katie please make sure to specify the date and time that you would like to sign up for as well as how many kids.

Playground Review
Children's Landing,
 the Gorham Crosby Park

     written by: Corinne Sheehan

 Barely visible as you drive down Main Street in Centerville is one of the only shady playgrounds I have found in the Barnstable area. Across from the 1856 Country Store (which also has a great selection of penny candy) "Children's Landing, the Gorham Crosby Park," is located among trees nestled into a little grove. Built by a group of mostly volunteers in the 1990's the park has seen some wear on the sturdy, massive main wooden structure, but is a vast space with wonderful slides and climbing opportunities as well as regular and bucket swings. Children's Landing has one of the tallest playground slides I have seen and several smaller ones for varying ages and abilities. The shade makes it accessible even on hotter summer days and there is usually a good crowd of mixed age groups playing on the equipment.

     Bring bug spray in the summer, and prepare for your child to get dirty here as the slides end in dirt and the wooden playscape itself is a bit dusty. Because the base of the grounds is packed dirt, it can get a bit muddy after rainy days. However, these things don't detract from the fun of one of the most unique playgrounds that I have found on the Cape. A walk or short drive to Four Seas usually caps off a late morning or afternoon spent here.

Ooey-Gooey Goop:

Materials:

This classic recipe turns cornstarch and water into an irresistible-to-the-touch, non-Newtonian fluid: a substance, like quicksand, that acts sometimes like a liquid and sometimes like a solid. To make a batch, have your child combine 1 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup of water in a shallow bowl or rimmed baking sheet (if the goop isn't drippy enough, add more water, a tablespoon at a time).You can also add food coloring, if desired! Put the mixture in a bin, bowl, or empty water table outside and let you child explore!  *This can be VERY messy, so it should be played with outside!*

For the Older Children

Marbelized Paper:

Materials

      *     Baking sheet with rim

      *     Shaving cream

      *     Squeegee

      *     Liquid food coloring

      *     Craft stick or toothpick

      *     Card stock

Instructions

       1.    Cover the baking sheet with a half-inch layer of shaving cream. Smooth it with the squeegee.

       2.    Dot the cream with drops of food coloring, then use a craft stick or toothpick to swirl it in the cream.

       3.    Lay a sheet of card stock on top of the cream and press lightly. Peel off the paper and use the squeegee to remove the excess shaving cream. Set the paper aside to dry. Try making a second, lighter print, or start over with a fresh layer of cream on the baking sheet.

       4.    Use the paper for a variety of crafts!

Enjoy the rest of your summer,
