Support Local Businesses

As we start a new year it is important to remember why we love our mountain community. The people, the quaintness, it's unique flavor. all of these things are important, and we are this type of community because of the special people running special businesses that serve our special needs. It may be true that we cannot always get what we need locally, but it is not often, and if we always try to find the goods and services we need up hear before we venture down the hill, when then, that shows that we think about are friends and neighbors first and foremost. Sometimes, it isn't even about the cash we spend, it is about the time and effort we spend locally.
Ed Bailey, Oakhurst Real Estate, summed up thinking locally very well in a poem he recently wrote. Ed agreed to share it with all of us.
Shopping Locally By: Ed Bailey He was a lean cowboy with a ready smile Didn't volunteer much, just wasn't his style He always wanted to help folks out But volunteering....., he wasn't about Then an older, wiser one said "listen Slim, You're helping right with the best of them You help the grocer, the dentist, the girl at the show You're helping folks you don't even know" His curious look gave way to a smile Knowing he'd been helping all the while You see, Slim shops locally, and thinks it not strange That he won't let his bucks ride some distance range He just grins and says yep, this is my kind of stuff If I'm helping local folks, maybe that's enough.
