SNAMP Update
The Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Project is still going strong in Oakhurst. This University of California forest study on the effects of forest thinning for fire protection is in its third year of seven.
The Forest Health team has taken extensive forest inventories and is busy running fire models. Preliminary results will be shared at a meeting in Davis on Feb. 17th. It will be available by webcast over your computer for those too far away to attend. The Water team has instrumentation in creeks in areas planned for fuel treaments and those where no work is planned. They are looking at water quality, quantity, sedimentation, snow levels and soil moisture.
The Wildlife team is busy studying the shy and elusive Pacific Fisher in the hills east of here. It is a weasel, not a bird, and perhaps the most unknown mammal in the forest. They currently have over 30 of them under collar and are keeping track of who goes where and what kills them. Life is harder out there for a fisher then you would expect. They will be presenting their project locally this spring.
For questions or comments please contact Anne Lombardo at amlombardo@ucdavis.edu. We are happy to put you on our mailing list for upcoming events notices.

Eight Tips to Help You Choose a Tax Preparer

The IRS urges people to use care and caution when choosing a tax
preparer. Remember, you are legally responsible for what's on your tax return
even if it was prepared by an another individual or firm.
Most tax return preparers are professional, honest and provide excellent
service to their clients. However, unscrupulous tax return preparers do exist
and can cause considerable financial and legal problems for their clients.
Therefore, it's important to find a qualified tax professional.
The following tips will help you choose a preparer who will offer the best
service for your tax preparation needs.
- Check the person's qualifications Ask if the preparer is
affiliated with a professional organization that provides its members with
continuing education and resources and holds them to a code of ethics.
- Check on the preparer's history Check to see if the
preparer has any questionable history with the Better Business Bureau, the
state's board of accountancy for CPAs or the state's bar association for
attorneys.
- Find out about their service fees Avoid preparers that base
their fee on a percentage of the amount of your refund or those who claim they
can obtain larger refunds than other preparers.
- Make sure the tax preparer is accessible Make sure you
will be able to contact the tax preparer after the return has been filed, even
after April 15, in case questions arise.
- Provide all records and receipts needed to prepare your
return Most reputable preparers will request to see your records and
receipts and will ask you multiple questions to determine your total income and
your qualifications for expenses, deductions and other items.
- Never sign a blank return Avoid tax preparers that ask you
to sign a blank tax form.
- Review the entire return before signing it Before you sign
your tax return, review it and ask questions. Make sure you understand
everything and are comfortable with the accuracy of the return before you sign
it.
- Make sure the preparer signs the form A paid preparer must
sign the return as required by law. Although the preparer signs the return, you
are responsible for the accuracy of every item on your return. The preparer
must also give you a copy of the return.
You can report abusive tax preparers and suspected tax fraud to the IRS on
Form 3949-A, Information Referral or by sending a letter to Internal Revenue
Service, Fresno, CA 93888. Download Form 3949-A from IRS.gov or order by mail
at 800-829-3676.

Motorized Travel on the Sierra National Forest
We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on
where we are with publishing the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and
Record of Decision (ROD) for the designation of roads, trails and areas for
Motorized Travel on the Sierra National Forest (SNF). FEIS and ROD The SNF
is tentatively scheduled to release the final documents in late February. The
final documents will have two components; the Final Environmental Impact
Statement (FEIS) and the Record of Decision (ROD). The FEIS is very similar to
the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) in that it discloses the
alternatives and describes the environmental effects on the social, physical,
and biological resources. The Record of Decision (ROD) documents the Forest
Supervisor's decision and the rationale for selecting the final alternative.
The final alternative may be a combination of the alternatives that were
discussed in the FEIS. Once the FEIS and ROD are released, there will be several
information meetings to describe the decision and a 45-day appeal period in
which the public can appeal the Forest Supervisor's decision to the Regional
Forester. After that step is completed, the forest will publish a free Motor
Vehicle Use Map which will display the designated system of roads, trails and
areas available for motorized travel on the Sierra National Forest.
Copies of the Final
Document As we move forward with the
release of the FEIS and ROD, we would like to know how you would like to
received the final decision. For those that do not respond, we assume you will
view the FEIS, ROD, and associate maps on the web at: www.fs.fed.us/r5/sierra/projects/ohv/ Please note that printed maps will only be available of the
selected alternative accompanying the ROD. Maps of the FEIS alternatives will be
available on-line or on CD. I would like

PG&E Offers Customers Special Incentives

CONSERVE NATURAL GAS THIS WINTER
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is offering its customers a valuable incentive to control their heating costs in the coming months through the utility's Winter Gas Savings Program. The program will give qualifying business and residential customers a credit of up to 20 percent on their natural gas bill for simply reducing natural gas use during January and February. Last winter, more than 2.3 million customers reduced their gas usage and earned bill credits totaling $59 million.
Almost all customers are eligible to participate and are automatically enrolled. To maximize the credit, customers should begin conserving when they receive their December energy bill. Customers who reduce their gas consumption by up to ten percent will receive an equal percentage credit on their spring gas bill. Customers who reduce their gas usage by ten percent or more will automatically receive a 20 percent credit.
To help customers conserve natural gas this year, PG&E offers informative tips, tools and resources on an interactive web page www.pge.com/wintergassavings. This site allows customers to calculate their savings and send an "Appliance-Gram" to family and friends to help them discover ways to save natural gas and money this winter.
To enjoy the benefits of this program, PG&E offers the following natural gas conservation tips: - Keep your thermostat set at 68°F to stay comfortable and save gas.
- Close all doors and windows while your HVAC system is running.
- Regularly check all air ducts and pipe insulation for damage.
- Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120°F or "low."
- Perform routine HVAC maintenance.
- Turn off gas equipment and heating appliances when not in use.
- Install weather stripping around windows, pipes, and doors to reduce drafts.
- Have a contractor check your central heating/air for leaks. 20 percent of heated air can be lost through leaking ducts.
- Take advantage of PG&E rebates and incentives and invest in energy efficient gas equipment.
For further assistance or information, contact PG&E's Business Customer Service Center at 1 (800) 468-4743.

Contest Searching for Logo for New Event
Oakhurst, CA. - A committee formed from the Oakhurst Area Chamber of
Commerce is looking for talented artists who can create a logo for a new
signature event.
The
Yosemite International Jazz Festival, currently being planned for fall of 2011,
will be a big event according to organizers. "The momentum the organizing
committee is building is incredible," said committee chairperson Angelo Pizelo.
"This is going to be an amazing festival with a lot of exciting events that
will be a tremendous draw for our community."
As
the festival is still in its planning stages, the group is in need of a logo to
symbolize the event. "We want something that will reflect the mountains, Yosemite and jazz," said Pizelo. "Something attractive to
use in our marketing materials that will catch the eye and help create
interest."
The winner
of the contest will receive a $500 prize. The money is being donated by the
Eastern Madera County Foundation; a philanthropic organization formed by
the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce for the benefit of Eastern
Madera. The Chamber is also the organizing force behind the event.
The
festival, which is anticipated to make a substantial impact to the community's
economy, is also being organized as a fundraiser benefitting the Oakhurst Civic Center
project. "This is an important vision for Oakhurst, to give residents a place
to gather, a center point for our community. This festival will go a long way
to making that a reality," Pizelo said.
Logo
submissions can be emailed to jarrod@YosemiteThisYear.com,
or mailed to the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau, 41969 Highway 41, Oakhurst, CA,
93644 and marked "Jazz
Festival Logo Contest." All submissions must be original works. No clip art
will be accepted. All reproduction rights will remain with the Jazz Festival
and its principals. No royalties outside the $500 cash prize for the winner
will be paid. Only digital submissions, either emailed or mailed on a CD, will
be accepted. All submissions must be received by March 1. The committee will
announce a winner by April 15.

California Looking to Rebound in 2010
|
Written by James Thompson
|
|
The numerous avenues of content distribution available today offer
filmmakers more opportunities than ever to display their work -- and
this has led to a substantial increase in production nationwide. But,
at the same time, production has been decreasing in California. Most
insiders attribute this to fiercecompetition as other states lure
production away from California. Others blame complacent California
legislators operating under the misconception that they had a captive
industry, and thus did little to keep production in the state.
To gain insight into this problem and learn more about opportunities available to California filmmakers, P3 Update
interviewed three sources: the president of a permitting authority in a
major metropolitan city, a film commissioner located in a pristine
mountain region, and the president of a service provider that conducts
business in and on the Pacific Ocean off the California coast. More

Quality Claim Service Makes a Difference
By Marilyn Rigg State FarmŽ agent
Headaches, hassles, and unnecessary strain in life can be reduced by researching the quality of claims service a company offers before purchasing an auto insurance policy. There are a few key areas to research when grading the quality of claim service provided by an auto insurer: customer satisfaction ratings, customer choices and professionalism of claim representatives.
Customer satisfaction is probably one of the easiest to research. Independent firms, such as J.D. Power and Associates, often rank customer satisfaction for entire industries. Auto insurance is no exception.
Quality claim service means prompt response and payment for what is owed for damage and quality repair work. But after an auto crash, some other intangibles can make the claims process much less stressful. Some questions to ask when shopping for auto insurance include: Is the person who sells me the policy, the same person I can trust to report a claim?
Will there be someone who can answer my questions if I have one? Will I have my choice of body shops to repair my vehicle?
Another measure of quality claim service is customer choice. Not only choosing the auto body repair shop, but even the choices you have in communicating with the company. With today's hectic lifestyles, some companies offer options to report claims in person, on the phone or even online, 24 hours a day.
Once the claim has been reported, you want to be kept informed and updated on the claim process. These multiple choice options for communicating can go a long way to making sure the claims process is as quick and easy as possible
Finally, professional claim handling can eliminate the unnecessary stresses related to an auto crash. Professional claim handling requires special skills. Claim adjusters need to empathize with the client's situation to establish good communication and assist them in making a claim. The professional needs to turn the anxiety of a customer not knowing what to expect into confidence that the claim will be handled fairly and quickly.
At the same time, they also need to investigate the facts of the claim. That means asking questions. This is where many customers can become uncomfortable. But if viewed in the right context, the questions a claim adjuster asks should be welcomed. Unfortunately, billions of dollars are lost each year due to claims fraud. Obviously, the people committing these crimes don't wear name tags that declare their intent. They look just like you and me. The questions asked by the claim adjuster can help keep your premiums lower, which is important to all of us.
A car crash is already a stressful time in anyone's life. But the quality of claim service can differentiate insurance company A from company B. Knowing that you've researched this before buying an auto insurance policy will give you an added confidence when the unexpected happens. Start by asking your agent about quality claim service.
