Installation Dinner

Please join us for a very special evening as we welcome in the 2010 Board of Directors Help us honor those who go above and beyond to make us shine. Business of the Year Man of the Year Woman of the Year Volunteer of the Year The Award Banquet, Dinner and Dance will take place on Friday, January 15th, 2010, at the Pines Resort, Lakeview from 6-10 p.m. Special room rates are available for those of you that would like to join us in the morning for breakfast! The Chamber has chosen to change the date, because we realize the burden of time and money the holidays can create for many business people. We feel that moving our event to January may relieve some of the burden, thus allowing more of you to join in the celebration. Please return the enclosed R.S.V.P. to the Chamber office (via, fax, email, or regular mail) no later than January 7th, 2010. Thank you, Susan Madden 2010 Chamber President

HINI Flu - Still a Concern
You probably have noticed that the spread of the H1N1 flu has been decreasing lately. Sadly, I will tell you that just last week another county resident passed away with confirmed H1N1. We send our condolences to family, friends and coworkers.
I imagine that in between all the holiday festivities and your still to-do lists, you may be asking whether getting the vaccine is still important. What we do know is that flu season typically lasts through May and past pandemics have occurred in waves. It is possible that we will see another increase in H1N1 and/or seasonal flu in the months ahead.
Useful tips provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for you to share with your family and friends during this holiday season.
3 SIMPLE STEPS TO A HEALTHY NEW YEAR - Add the Vaccine to Your Wish List - Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu. There is plenty of vaccine available and everyone, regardless of age is now encouraged to get the vaccine. Our next clinic will be offered at:
- Griffin Hall 201 North C Street in Madera on January 11th from 4:30 - 6:30 PM. The Public Health Department in Oakhurst will also give H1N1 vaccine on January 22nd from 9 AM - 4:00 PM.
- Be a Germ Stopper - Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Also, stay home if you are sick and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Check the Facts and Stay Informed - Visit FLU.gov regularly for the latest information. And if you hear a rumor, visit Myths & Facts on that page to run a fact check.
If you've been vaccinated already, please share this email with friends and family and let them know why the H1N1 vaccine is safe and recommended by health experts. The 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine is made the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine. Millions of people have safely received the H1N1 vaccine, including the President, First Lady and their children.
Questions? Visit FLU.gov or call the California Department of Public Health H1N1 HOTLINE 1-888-865-0564, offering services in English and several other languages. And of course, you can call us! 675-7893

Saturday Market is NOT Closing!!!

We recently fell prey to the rumor mill and are guilty of not asking the right questions. The Chamber recently commented that Saturday Market was one of the local retailers that would be closing their doors. They were closed for certain holidays and changing to winter hours - NOT closing! Our sincere apologies for the mix up. Saturday Market is a great store and we are very pleased to know that they are doing well and will continue to be here for our shopping enjoyment. If you have not been to this store it is a MUST.
Saturday Market is offering a great deal this weekend (Jan. 8-10). Buy $30.00 worth of merchandise, get $20.00 worth of merchandise free! See you there. Kathy

PG&E Offers Customers Special Incentives

CONSERVE NATURAL GAS THIS WINTER
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is offering its customers a valuable incentive to control their heating costs in the coming months through the utility's Winter Gas Savings Program. The program will give qualifying business and residential customers a credit of up to 20 percent on their natural gas bill for simply reducing natural gas use during January and February. Last winter, more than 2.3 million customers reduced their gas usage and earned bill credits totaling $59 million.
Almost all customers are eligible to participate and are automatically enrolled. To maximize the credit, customers should begin conserving when they receive their December energy bill. Customers who reduce their gas consumption by up to ten percent will receive an equal percentage credit on their spring gas bill. Customers who reduce their gas usage by ten percent or more will automatically receive a 20 percent credit.
To help customers conserve natural gas this year, PG&E offers informative tips, tools and resources on an interactive web page www.pge.com/wintergassavings. This site allows customers to calculate their savings and send an "Appliance-Gram" to family and friends to help them discover ways to save natural gas and money this winter.
To enjoy the benefits of this program, PG&E offers the following natural gas conservation tips: - Keep your thermostat set at 68°F to stay comfortable and save gas.
- Close all doors and windows while your HVAC system is running.
- Regularly check all air ducts and pipe insulation for damage.
- Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120°F or "low."
- Perform routine HVAC maintenance.
- Turn off gas equipment and heating appliances when not in use.
- Install weather stripping around windows, pipes, and doors to reduce drafts.
- Have a contractor check your central heating/air for leaks. 20 percent of heated air can be lost through leaking ducts.
- Take advantage of PG&E rebates and incentives and invest in energy efficient gas equipment.
For further assistance or information, contact PG&E's Business Customer Service Center at 1 (800) 468-4743.

We had more volunteers than we needed as people who just wanted
to help came. Pines Resort in Bass
Lake (where we have
held a number of classes, conferences etc.) sent their banquet manager, table
linens, serving pieces, everything needed and orchestrated the plating and
serving of the food. Pizza factory provided all the paper goods, Frito Lay a
ton of chips, water company, bottles of water, and 52 teams of 5 a dinner for
10-12 people. we were able to take the left over dinners and provide
Christmas day dinner for the senior center and extra for them to take home.
We were able to take to Manna House (our community food bank) food, toys for
Easter outreach and more. Bags of gifts to the local convalescent hospital on
Christmas Day, stuffed animals to Cal Fire to carry on the fire engines for children in trauma.
This is only the first
annual and the vision of Jami Fenton, one of our GodShop family is for other
communities to take of the call, and several hav e already caught it and plan
it for their
We plan on other outreaches during the
year starting with this Friday January 8, when a semi truck load of non
perishable food will arrive from Full Armor of God Ministries in Perris California. Pastor
Ruben Rojo, the owner of the trucking company will be driving it here to
distribute to the community and also Manna House.
If y ou would like to get in on this incredible
opportunity we need helpers to unload, put into banana boxes and bags and
distribute to the people who will come and also help load a couple of trucks
from Manna House to house for the need over the next season. The truck will

Where Are They Now?
Dave Wolin Cruising the halls at the L.A. Auto Show, I stumbled upon Dave Wolin, racing legend and industry icon. "Dave, haven't seen you in 15 years - What have you been up to ? " My connection with Dave; 25 years ago, I was just getting started at Trucking Magazine. Dave, running the factory Mitsubishi truck team at Road Atlanta (he practically invented pickup truck road racing, long before NASCAR), let me drive one of his race trucks so I could write about it. Heck of an offer for a young aspiring journalist.
Dave's brief bio; 40 year career in racing, winning about everything there is, including a dozen national championships and, the zenith, as Mitsubishi's factory team, set endurance racing win records not yet beaten. At last count, Dave's teams had over 200 wins in a variety of racing series'. 15 years ago, I had stopped by Dave's Riverside California shop where a dozen Kia's were under construction for SCCA Pro Rally and off road racing competition. Dave's Kia team won a couple of national rally championships and the Baja 1000.
On the business side, Dave's marketing business, Dave Wolin Inorporated, was one of the first to tie racing and automotive industry promotions together; developing auto manufacturer displays at racetracks back in the 70's. Dave said; "Factory supported racing pretty much came to an end in the late 90's, at least on the level of financial support that I liked. And I didn't want to work so hard; racing was supposed to be fun. So I sold the Riverside ranch, moved to a small town, Oakhurst, California, near Yosemite National Park, and reduced my car collection to about 10. Still racing, won a hill climb series this past year; got a new car under construction and, actually business is pretty good. I was able to sell off my event management business a while back, also the racing sponsorship business, so now I'm concentrating on e-commerce and websites for just a few clients.
No retirement in the near future; racing is expensive." " I know you've always been involved in numerous community activities; update me there". Dave replied; "the usual, I guess, I had to retire from the State Military Reserve so I keep my hand in with Amvets and our local emergency preparedness committee. In Riverside County, I had worked a bit with the local economic development group so I've somewhat continued that. With my background in car commercials and contacts in the industry, I took on the Madera County Film Commission; now defunded by the way, so I guess I'm the sponsor too. Ran for town council a while back, got elected but incorporation didn't pass so getting elected didn't matter. Just served Thanksgiving dinners at a homeless shelter in Fresno. Probably the most important; I put on the "Legends of Riverside", celebrating the racers of the past at the Riverside Raceway Museum. With the increased interest in vintage racing, it's about time we honored the guys who helped create our industry, the heroes of my youth, many of whom didn't make much money racing and were forgotten for 40 years. Plan to attend, tell your friends and come up and see me."
There you go, if you were wondering about Dave, that tells it all.
