Are Your Final Expenses Covered?
|
By Marilyn Rigg 683-3467 State Farm InsuranceŽ agent
Are you worried about how your loved ones will pay the expenses incurred at the time of your death? While death is an inevitable part of life, financial questions associated with final medical bills, funeral expenses and estate settlements should not be. According to a 2001 General Price List survey of the National Funeral Directors Association, the average cost for final expenses is $9,000. Preparing for those costs today could prevent family members from dealing with a financial burden in addition to coping with the loss of a loved one. One way you can assure that your final expenses are covered without placing the responsibility on your family is to make certain you have a life insurance policy that will meet your needs. Your life insurance policy can be an important part of your financial planning. Taking the time now to review your coverages and benefits may give you the peace of mind you deserve. The death of a loved one can be enough of a physical and emotional burden for your family. By planning ahead, you can prevent it from being a financial hardship as well. Visit with your insurance agent and discuss how a life insurance policy can cover your final expenses. It will only take a few moments of your time, but may go a long way toward easing the burdens of those you leave behind.

A Better Way to Light Up the Holidays
|
 Holiday
lights may help bring joy to the season, but they can also bring added costs to
your energy bill. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) encourages
customers to save energy and money by purchasing energy-efficient LED
(light-emitting diode) strands to decorate homes or businesses.
LED holiday lights reduce energy consumption by as much as 90 percent compared
to traditional incandescent lights and produce bright light for up to 20
holiday seasons. LED holiday lights also produce almost no heat, thereby
reducing the risk of fire.
LED technology produces light in a
completely different way than incandescent lamps. While incandescent lamps emit
light by heating a filament and produce waste heat in the process, LED lights
are illuminated solely by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor
material. Because they produce almost no heat, LED holiday lights are safe to
touch without worrying about burning your hands.
As people begin to decorate their homes and offices for holiday festivities,
PG&E also reminds customers to keep a vigilant eye on safety. We offer the
following safety tips for all types of holiday lighting:
ˇ Before you string outdoor lights, check for overhead power lines. Don't place
yourself or any object in a position where you or it may come in contact with a
power line-the result can be fatal. Look up before raising ladders or other
objects. Keep at least 10 feet away from overhead lines.
ˇ Make sure lights used to decorate the outside of the house are approved for
outdoor use. Never use indoor lights outdoors.
ˇ If stringing lights on outdoor trees, make sure tree limbs haven't grown into
or near power lines. Branches or entire trees can become energized if they
contact a power line.
ˇ Check all light strands for cracked or broken plugs, frayed insulation, or
bare wires. Worn cords can cause fires. Discard damaged sets of lights.
ˇ Route cords inside your home so they won't trip anyone. Don't place them under
rugs, furniture, or appliances. If covered, cords can overheat or become frayed
and can cause a fire.
ˇ Follow the manufacturer's limits for number of strings that can safely be
connected together.
ˇ Always turn off tree and decorative lights-indoors and outdoors-when leaving
the house and before going to bed.
More information on safety and energy-efficient holiday lighting can be found

Property Values for Property Tax Purposes
|
The Madera County Assessor's Office conducted a countywide review of values for
property tax purposes for the 2009-2010 tax year in order to enroll any decline
in value that a property may have experienced. This is known as a Proposition 8
value reduction, recognizing when a property's market value falls below its
assessed value.
If the market value of a property was lower
than its assessed value as of the January 1, 2009, lien date, the assessed value
was reduced to reflect the decline. Over 15,000 property values were lowered
for the 2009-2010 tax year in Madera County. If your property qualified you
would have received a letter in the mail telling you of the value reduction, and
your property tax bill this year should have been less than last year's
bill.
While Proposition 13 continues to protect
all real property taxpayers throughout Madera County and the State of California
by putting a ceiling on increases in assessed value, and while, in most cases,
the Proposition 13 factored base year value is still well below the current
market value, as an owner you may want to request to have your value reviewed by
the Assessor's Office. To do so, call 675-7710 and ask to speak to the
appraiser assigned to your area. Please have your Assessment Number available
(the Assessment Number can be found near the top of your property tax bill).
You will be asked to complete a one-page form to assist the Assessor's Office
staff in this process. This form can be mailed or faxed to you, or you may
download the form from the Assessor's Office website at:
http://www.madera-county.com/assessor/pdf/PROP8WEBREQ.pdf
The completed form must be received by the Assessor's
Office no later than November 30, 2009, in order to be considered timely for the
current tax year.
The review will be conducted free of
charge. This is one of the responsibilities of the Assessor's Office, so there
is no need to pay for this service.
