Do You Have a "Basketball Jones"
|
|
The Chamber is putting together a basketball ball team to play against the Harlem Globetrotter Ambassadors.
The team will be coming to Oakhurst to help us raise funds for the Chamber and several local charities. The game will be held at Yosemite High School on Thursday, May 13th, 2010. Our team players need to be at least 19 years old, and they cannot be playing collegiate or professional basketball.
We are hoping to have enough players to form four teams.
Tickets will go on sale soon. In the meantime we need our team. We have coaches and several players already signed up for this fun event. You do not need to be a member of the Chamber to play. Please contact the Chamber office to sign up. 683-7766 or events@oakhurstchamber.com

Chamber Nominated Over 50 Attractions for the National Geographic's Geotourism Website
|
Nominations for Eastern Madera were a bit on the light side, so the Chamber staff dedicated as much time as they could to nominate all of the wonderful sights, attractions, restaurants, museums, hotels, B & B's, and retailers as we could.
National Geographic Nominations for the map portion of the project closed November 1st. The vetting process will take place next and Kathy McCorry will be going to Truckee CA in a few weeks to represent our region during that process.
Sometime after the first of the year, we should be able to start going back into the website and adding more content, but it was important that everyone was nominated before the mapping process closed.

Oakhurst Branch Library begins Bestseller and DVD Rental Program
Oakhurst, CA
- October 2009 - Beginning November 2, 2009, the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch
Library will implement a new program to supplement the purchase of books and
DVDs for our library.
The State of California has cut all
Public Library Funds (PLF) from which our book purchases are made. Madera
County reduced the
Library Budget by 38% for 2009/2010. The
result is a double blow for Oakhurst; further reductions are likely to
follow. It may take as long as three
years for Madera
to qualify for PLF.
Friends of
the Oakhurst Branch Library (FOBL) will underwrite as much as $1,000 per month
for bestsellers, which County Librarian Linda Sitterding will purchase and new DVDs,
which Oakhurst Branch Manager Dale Rushing will select and purchase. These
books and DVDs will be rented to patrons for $1 per week.
"I understand
that if we want to continue to provide excellent materials, including new
books, DVDs, and music on CD, to our patrons, the Rent~a~Book program is the
only way for us to do that," said Dale Rushing, Oakhurst Branch Manager, "So,
I definitely support this program."
All rental
items must be returned to the branch from which they were rented. At the conclusion
of popular demand, these items will be put into regular circulation within the
SJVLS library system. It is believed that by the end of the first six months,
this program will become self sustaining.
The same
rental program was approved in the past by the Board of Supervisors and many
other libraries in California
have Bestseller Rentals. It is currently in practice at Madera's main branch.
All FOBL book
sale income, previously designated for the Building Expansion Fund, has been
temporarily redirected to this program. Book sales are held monthly and dates
are available at OakhurstFOBL.com. Memberships, pledges and donations are also
essential to this program's success.
"FOBL has
supported our branch library through difficult times in the past, sometimes
donating as much as $7500 each year," stated board president Candace
Flammang. It is hoped that the rental program will provide income to purchase
additional books.

Flu Information
|
Madera County Public Health Update
Madera County Public Health does NOT have any seasonal flu vaccine at this time. It is hoped that the expected shipment will arrive by November 10th. H1N1 vaccine is a new vaccine. As this vaccine becomes available, we expect to receive it in small quantities. Because children are gravely affected by the H1N1 virus, Public Health and the Madera County Office of Education are working together to plan for giving vaccine at the schools in the evenings and on Saturdays.
For School Information; visit the Madera County Board of Education website - www.maderacoe.k12.ca.us You will be able to learn which schools will hold the clinics, who can get the vaccine and the dates and times of the school flu clinics. Madera County Public Health plans to hold drive through clinics as H1N1 clinics when the vaccine arrives. At this time, we do not know when we will have the vaccine. School clinics for H1N1 and later all drive through clinics will be posted on: www.madera-county.com/publichealth/h1n1
