Beautification Begins on Hwy 41/49 Project
Cornerstone Gardening has begun cleaning up the property at the intersection of Hwy 41 and 49. Fencing is being measured and will be ordered within the next couple of weeks.

ACTION Committee Donation

Board Members from A.C.T.I.O.N., the Foundation, and the Oakhurst Area Chamber. (Left to Right) Kathy McCorry, Chris Baker, Dawn Connelly, Ed Bailey, Sherry Colgate, Greg Chappel, Susan Madden, Tim Madden, Angelo Pizelo, Bill Putnam, Sandy Brinley, Shelle Abbott, Patrice Jensen, and Darlene Kelly.

A decision has been made that the Foundation will create a banner frame on the property and the Chamber will be responsible for hanging and removing banners on the frame. Banners still will not be allowed on the fence, but organizations can contact the Chamber and schedule their special event banners on the banner frame. Guidelines for the banner display are still being established.

Next spring the Foundation will landscape the property. The Foundation has chosen to do a native plant restoration with an emphasis on education. Plants will be chosen based on Native American usage and plaques will be placed educating the public about how Native American used the plants indigenous to our area.

Fund raising continues for this project. If you would like to make a donation to the 41/49 project, please contact the Chamber office or make your check to: Eastern Madera County Chamber Foundation, 49074 Civic Circle, Oakhurst CA 93644.

Tarantulas are the Guests of Honor in Coarsegold
Tarantula
While some people tend to run away from tarantulas, one small town in California's gold country celebrates them, and some people even embrace them just in time for Halloween.

Coarsegold originally started as a mining town in 1849, when large nuggets were found in a nearby stream. Since then, the city has made its living by ranching and, thanks to the numerous tourists that come through the area on Highway 41 in their way to Yosemite, tourism. Coarsegold holds its own for attracting tourists each October, however, as the small town pays homage to tarantulas. MORE>>

Appreciating the Staff of Our Library
FOBL
All of us have been helped by the great staff assisting Branch Manager Dale Rushing at our Library.

Waunetta Fuchs and her husband John moved to Ahwahnee in 1986 to build their dream home; they did the work themselves and the project took them seven years.  In 1991 Waunetta volunteered at the Oakhurst Library and was hired full-time in 1994.  Dale Rushing, Branch Manager told us, "If you have a question that no one else can answer, Waunetta would be the one to ask."  She went on to say "Waunetta is a hard worker, knowledgeable, and a very efficient Library Assistant."  Waunetta's hobbies include reading and music.  She sings in her church choir, and is a member of the "Chamber Singers.  Waunetta is a Life Member of FOBL.

Leilani Cummings visited our Library frequently as a child while growing up in Oakhurst.  When Leilani turned sixteen, Joan Wandel, then Branch Manager, offered her a job.  That was over ten years ago.  Leilani's job titles have included page, clerical assistant, and now library assistant.  Besides working 20-hours each week at our Library, she divides her time between finishing her bachelor's degree in biblical studies (on-line), and working in youth ministries at her local church.

MOTORISTS ADVISED OF NEW HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS AT THE STATE ROUTE 41/RD 416 INTERSECTION IN MADERA COUNTY
CalTrans logoThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the completion of the State Route 41/Road 416 "T" intersection widening improvement project in Madera County within the northbound lanes of State Route 41.

Construction of this $1.4 million dollar State Highway Operations and Protection (SHOPP) project began in June 2009. As part of this improvement project, this "T" intersection now includes a refuge area and acceleration lane located within the median just north of Road 416 and includes new 4-foot shoulders and standard 12-foot lanes on northbound 41.  As part of this project, plant establishment operations continue to occur within the project limits at this location.

Caltrans would like to thank the motoring public for their patience during this improvement project.  Motorists are reminded to drive with extra care while traveling through construction and maintenance projects and reminds drivers to "Slow for the Cone Zone" at all times.
PG&E Offers Storm Preparation Tips for Customers
PG&E LogoSAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Winter storms can be dangerous and damaging if you are unprepared. When the temperature starts to drop, it's time to think about getting ready.
During a storm, the combination of strong winds and heavy rain could result in trees, tree limbs and other vegetation coming into contact with overhead power lines and interrupting electric service to customers. If customers experience a power outage, they should call PG&E's outage information line at 1-800-PGE-5002 to report the outage or to get updates on power restoration efforts in their area.  <<MORE>>
