Thank you for selecting Sierra Ambulance as the Business of
the Week.
Sierra Ambulance is a non-profit organization founded in
1964 by a group of dedicated volunteers who wanted to provide a fast and safe
way for the sick and injured to receive medical care. Today, Sierra
provides 9-1-1 paramedic service to all of eastern Madera
County from the 22 Mile House to
Wawona and from the Mariposa County Line through North
Fork. We operate from three locations; Bass Lake,
Oakhurst and Coarsegold. Our ambulances are staffed 7/24 with paramedics
and EMT-1's.
Sierra continues to offer a membership program wherein for
$55 per year per household, the entire family can be covered for the cost of an
ambulance transport to any area hospital. It covers that portion of the
cost above what insurance may pay, either your co-pay or deductible. If
there is no insurance, or the insurance denies the claim, the membership covers
the full cost.
We also offer CPR and first aid training to the community at
little or in some cases, no cost. Call our office for more information,
642-0650.

Chamber Unaffected by Budget Cuts
|
During all of the recent talk of state and county budget cuts it occurred to us, some people have been concerned about the future of the Oakhurst Area Chamber. The Chamber does not receive and county, state, or federal funds of any kind. One third of our revenue comes from membership dues and the other two thirds the Chamber raises through our own fund raising efforts. So rest assured. The Chamber will continue to service local businesses and the community just as we have done the past 50 years.

Chamber Takes Lead on Two Major Beautification Projects
|
There are two empty lots in the heart of the business district in Oakhurst that have been quite an eyesore for several years. The Chamber has been in touch with the owners of both properties and they have now agreed to allow the Chamber to manage the projects while they remain undeveloped.
The empty parcel across from Oak Hill Cemetery has fencing going up around the entire 3.3 acres and once that has been completed, the Chamber will put together a team of volunteers to go in a few times a year to weed and clean up.
The empty parcel at the intersection of Highways 41 and 49 will start undergoing a dramatic transformation next month; when new fencing is purchased (it will not be chain link) and landscaping will be done to create more of a park like setting.
These efforts are being made possible due to positive community spirit of the property owners, and a few generous donors. however we can still use more help paying for the fencing, landscaping, and privacy screening. If you or someone you know can help us by contributing financially or with donations of time, goods, or services, please contact the Chamber.

IRS Alerts Public to New Identity Theft Scams
|
WASHINGTON -The Internal Revenue Service reminds consumers to avoid
identity theft scams that use the IRS name, logo or Web site in an
attempt to convince taxpayers that the scam is a genuine communication
from the IRS. Scammers may use other federal agency names, such as the
U.S. Department of the Treasury. In an identity theft scam, a
fraudster, often posing as a trusted government, financial or business
institution or official, tries to trick a victim into revealing
personal and financial information, such as credit card numbers and
passwords, bank account numbers and passwords, Social Security numbers
and more. Generally, identity thieves use someone's personal data to
steal his or her financial accounts, run up charges on the victim's
existing credit cards, apply for new loans, credit cards, services or
benefits in the victim's name and even file fraudulent tax returns. The scams may take place through e-mail, fax or phone. When they take place via e-mail, they are called "phishing" scams. MORE>> |

Small Businesses Won Record $93.3 Billion in Federal Contracts
|
WASHINGTON
- Small businesses won a record $93.3 billion in federal prime contracts in
Fiscal Year 2008 (Oct. 1, 2007-Sept. 30, 2008), an increase of almost $10
billion from 2007, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration's third
annual small business procurement scorecard, released today. In addition, small disadvantaged businesses, women-owned
businesses and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses increased their share
of federal contracting dollars by at least $1 billion to $3 billion.
"This record
$93.3 billion in contracts to small businesses is significant, however, across
the federal government we are committed to ensuring that the 23 percent goal is
met and even exceeded going forward," SBA Administrator Karen Mills said.
"Especially during these tough economic times, federal contracts for small
businesses can be just the opportunity they need to continue to grow and create
jobs. At the same time, the federal government gets access to some of the most
innovative and best products and services."
Earlier this
week, the Obama Administration reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that
minority-owned businesses, small businesses, including women and veteran-owned
businesses have greater access to federal government contracting opportunities.
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and SBA Administrator Karen Mills announced a
government-wide plan that includes federal agency procurement officials holding
or participating in more than 200 events over the next 90 days to share
information on government contracting opportunities, including those available
under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"President Obama
has made a commitment to ensuring that small businesses have greater access to
federal contracting opportunities and it is a commitment shared across this
Administration," Mills said. "We have already begun taking aggressive
steps to connect small businesses with contracting opportunities, as well as
increase our outreach to federal agency procurement officers to make sure they
get the information and tools they need to help them connect with these good,
innovative small companies."

Chukchansi Tribes Lost Millions on State's Mistake
|
 Written by Business Journal staff
California's
Indian gaming tribes are entitled to operate 10,549 more slot machines
thanks to a federal court order involving the owners of Chukchansi Gold
Resort and Casino.
Yesterday's court judgment caps a case brought by the Cachil Dehe
Band of Wintun Indians in Colusa County against the California Gambling
Control Commission. The suit, which the Picayune Rancheria of the
Chukchansi Indians joined, alleged the state miscalculated formulas
used to allot licenses for gaming devices to tribes. The decision
orders the state to undertake a drawing within 45 days to divvy the new
slot machines among California tribes. About 56 tribes currently hold
gaming compacts with the state. In a statement, Morris Reid,
tribal chair of the Picayune Rancheria based in Coarsegold, said the
state lost upwards of $30 million in potential tax revenue from the
slot machines denied to the tribes. "The state and tribes lost
millions of dollars the past decade that they can never get back due to
the state's miscalculation of the number of gaming machines available
under the compacts, but the federal court's decision wisely corrects
this going forward," Reid said. "This is a great win for all of Indian
Country."

Celebrate Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial in Oakhurst
|
Celebrate Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial and learn all about
his life at this once in a Lifetime exhibition called "Abraham Lincoln: Self
Made in America Learning Station Exhibition" coming to the Wild Wonderful King
Vintage Museum, Oakhurst, California
from March 6,2010 to April 1, 2010. The exhibition is a first class
exhibition created by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in
Springfield, Illinois and supported by the "We the People" program of the
National Endowment for the Humanities and by the History Channel. The
Wild Wonderful King Vintage Museum is only one of four locations in the state
of California hosting the exhibition and the only one in the Central Valley.
What is the connection with our Community and Abraham Lincoln?? In the early 1860's influential Californians
started visiting Yosemite Park and they decided that they wanted the land of
beauty to belong to the state of California.
During the Civil War this group of influential Californians petitioned
Abraham Lincoln to grant the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove to the
State of California. On June 30, 1864
Abraham Lincoln in the middle of the Civil War signed the legislation, known as
the "Yosemite Grant", The legislation
granted the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove to the state of
California. At a later time in history
the land went back to the Federal Government, but the Yosemite Grant Act of 1864 is seen as the
beginning of the State of California Park system.
The exhibition "Abraham Lincoln: Self Made in America" documents
the journey taken by Abraham Lincoln from frontier obscurity to our nation's
presidency through a combination of images, objects and the written word.
The exhibition consists of Seven Learning Stations as shown in this photo
and the exhibition will be at the Wild Wonderful King Vintage Museum, located
at 40680 Highway 41, Oakhurst, California from March 6, 2010 to April 1, 2010.
The
exhibition will be open to the public seven days a week with the mornings being
devoted to school tours. The celebration will start with a kickoff event
on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, February 12, 2010. The museum's permanent
collection will focus on "Fashions from the 1860's to the early 1900's" still
keeping parts of the children's and men's collection on exhibition. The "Abraham Lincoln" exhibition includes
special teaching trunks and lesson plans available for the teachers and the
schools. These teaching trunks will
remain with the museum forever so that the students of our community can share
in the rich history of our 16th President for generations to
come. Please contact the museum director.
