Who will be the next Honorary Mayor?
 
Attention all quasi politically/civic minded/charitable and motivated individuals!
 
You can become the next Honorary Mayor of Oakhurst. To win the race, simply raise money for your favorite not for profit charity. Each dollar counts as a vote, the most votes wins the title and duties of Honorary Mayor for one year. The race runs for only three months.  Kick off is April 9th, 2009.
 
Over the years, the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce Honorary Mayor's program has brought awareness to and raised thousands of dollars for many local charities.

The Oakhurst Area Chamber is very pleased to announce our new Spring Event - The Oakhurst Home and Garden Show.
 
gardeningWe hope to draw thousands of visitors to the show and we are reaching out to all local businesses that fit into this genre to showcase themselves at this event.
 
Many second home owners will be opening their homes for the summer and many locals will be spending more time at home as opposed to traveling this summer. The show will be held in our own beautiful Oakhurst Community Park. 
 
There will be home decor, garden decor, arts & crafts, food, beer tasting, BBQ competition, fun for the whole family.

Social Security Administration - One Time Economic Recovery Payment
Social Security Admin LogoIn May 2009, Social Security will distribute a one-time payment of $250 to Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries nationwide. IRS Releases Information to Help Employers Claim COBRA Coverage Credit on Payroll Tax Form
IRS Fact Sheet logoWASHINGTON -- The Internal Revenue Service today released detailed information that will help employers claim credit for the COBRA medical premiums they pay for their former employees.

The IRS unveiled new information on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov, that includes an extensive set of questions and answers for employers. In addition, the Web site contains a revised version of the quarterly payroll tax return that employers will use to claim credit for the COBRA medical premiums they pay for their former employees.

Form 941, Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return, will also be sent to about 2 million employers in mid-March.  More>>>

SBA1 LogoThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Act) is good news for small businesses.   While the Act contains a package of loan fee reductions, higher guarantees , new SBA programs, secondary market incentives, and enhancements to current SBA lending programs that will help unlock credit markets and begin economic recovery for the nation's small business sector, the Act also contains other federal assistance to make small businesses sound.
 
SBA has established teams to tackle a wide variety of policy decisions, system modifications, regulatory changes, legal requirements and new programs launches authorized by the President and Congress.  Implementation is now underway.  The Act provides $730 million to SBA to make changes to the agency's lending and investment programs so that they can reach more small businesses that need help.  Funding includes:  More>>>

Emerson Institute Concert - Small Potatoes
 Emerson Institute LogoOn Sunday March 22nd at 1:00 pm, The Positive Living Center in Oakhurst will host Small Potatoes, a fabulously tight and entertaining folk duo from the Chicago area, who are no strangers to the mountain area. This will be their fourth appearance at the PLC and they participated in some of the legendary house concerts in Mariposa hosted by the late Bob DeWitt. The content of their material is strictly non-religious.

Merced to Bakersfield High Speed Rail Project
 Scoping Meetings To Begin
 
 High Speed Rail Logo - smallThe California High Speed Rail Authority, as the lead agency for the California Environmental Quality Act process, is issuing a Notice of Preparation of a Project Level Environmental Impact Report/Statement for the Merced to Bakersfield section of the proposed High Speed Train System.  The Federal Railroad Administration, as the lead Federal Agency, is publishing a Notice of Intent in the Federal Register for the project. 
 
To insure that the issues most important to residents, public agencies, and other involved parties are addressed, the Authoity is inviting you to participate in scoping meetings to collect public input.  The Notice of Preparation meeting dates and locations are available at www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov/.  You can submit comments at the Authority's website or by writing to California High Speed Rail Authority, 925 L Street, Suite 1425, Sacramento, CA 95814. 
Madera County Tax Assessor's Office 
 
madera county logoBusiness Property Statements and Agricultural Property Statements have been mailed by the Assessor's office for tax year 2009.  These forms should be completed and returned by April 1, 2009.  State law requires that a late filing penalty of 10% be added to all equipment assessments resulitng from property statements that become delinquent. 
 
In emergency cases, written requests for extensions may be granted through May 9th, if they are submitted prior to the final filing date.
 
Help in completing the forms may be found by calling 559-675-7710 or by stopping by the Assessor's office new location -  Madera County Government Center, 200 W. Fourth Street, Madera, CA.
