JANUARY 2011

Greetings Huntington Beach Hot Yoga Family,

Hopefully everyone had a memorable holiday season and is ready for the beginning of the New Year! HBHY remained busy during the holiday season as many students truly depend on their yoga practice to deal with the craziness of the holidays. The staff would like to thank all of the students who were constantly bringing in baked goods because it has now given us even more reason to practice yoga!

HBHY would like to thank Allison Horack for her contributions to the studio as the General Manager. Allison decided to step down last month but will remain on as a Hot Power Flow instructor. We developed a great relationship over the past 9 months and I know her warmth will be missed at the studio.  Lindsey Hill, the studio's first manager in 2008, is the new General Manager. She left the studio in May 2009, married Joseph Hill and had their first son, Lucus, and now is happy to be back in our community. Welcome back Lindsey!

Please be aware of the schedule change starting on Monday January 3, 2011. Hot Power Flow will be offered at 11 AM and 3 PM Monday through Friday and Hot Yoga is now offered at 12:30 PM Monday through Friday.

The 30 - day challenge begins on Monday January 3, 2011. Please remember you can do either a Hot Yoga or Hot Power Flow class. If you miss a day, you are allowed to double up on any given day. (I think our very own Hot Yoga Instructor, Erica Schwartz, did three in a day to complete her challenge, no surprise there!).  Please sign up at the front desk and embark on your own personal revolution.

January and February are usually the busiest times of the year at HBHY as many people decide to get back into a regular exercise routine as part of a New Year's Resolution.  I was recently asked if I had any New Year's Resolutions and my answer was no.  I don't have time for one! I think my Hot Yoga practice has given me what yoga has always promised to deliver ~ a sense of balance. When I first began doing yoga I was highly motivated to be successful physically in the postures and was committed to that achievement and practiced five days a week for at least ten years. My mind had already decided what I was going to get out of class, a perfect posture. Looking back, I now can see how far my mind has opened and achieved a sense of balance. Therefore, I was able to recognize and receive through awareness the wonderful gifts of a dedicated practice. I think if I had done any other exercise for that long I would have burnt out.

I will never forget how much it made me think and feel better about myself at a young age. I depended on it emotionally because it seemed to lessen so many of the highs and lows of life and created a middle road for me. Yoga has so much more to offer than just the incredible physical benefits such as weight loss, which is what many students are seeking in the New Year.  I think you will see that though you may have come in for specific result as I once did, if you keep an open mind, you may experience the vast array of mental and emotional benefits it has to offer and will receive the true gifts of this ancient exercise.

Yoga is still one of my greatest teachers in life. If you have been gone for a while from your yoga practice, don't try to get it all back in one or two classes, please remember to take it one class, one posture, one breath at a time and stay open to what it may bring you!

While I traveled though India in 1999, I came across a painted wall in Varanasi with an inscription which still rings true for me today:

No Yoga, No Peace

Know Yoga, Know Peace

See you on your mat!

Chuck & Laurie

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE?

[Chuck] 2 to 3 times a week

[Laurie] 3 to 4 times a week. My goal is to one of these days be able to find the time to go every day.

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE?

[Chuck] Originally to help my flexibility for golf. Now for the golf flexibility, weight, balance, strength.

[Laurie] It is an overall physical and mental work out. It eliminates my aches and pains.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?

[Chuck] Feeling better physically and mentally.

[Laurie] My flexibility and balance have improved immensely. I also feel more toned. It reenergizes me when I am feeling run down and stressed out.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE?

[Chuck] Triangle, it opens my hips the best.

[Laurie] Believe it or not, my favorite position is Camel, especially after being out of town and sleeping in hotel beds and sitting on long airplane flights. My back and shoulders just say thank you, thank you after Camel.

HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

[Chuck] Just has made me feel better physically and mentally.

[Laurie] It is the only form of exercise that I have been able to stick with. As a matter of fact it is addicting.

FEATURED STUDENTS - Megan Conlay
Megan Conlay

Hometown:

Born and raised in Huntington Beach.

Childhood aspiration:

As a child, I frequently changed my mind about what I would be when I grew up.  The one thing that remained constant was that I knew I wanted to be a mom.  When it came time to choose a career, I got my elementary teaching credential so that I could positively impact the lives of children before I had my own.

First Yoga Class:

I took a few classes at my gym, but the first one I really loved was December 29, 2007 at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga.  I got in trouble for trying to leave to go to the restroom, but I came back the next day and have been practicing ever since.

Most influential teacher:

I feel that every teacher at HBHY has been influential in strengthening my practice.  We are fortunate to have a staff that genuinely enjoys teaching and helping the practitioners deepen their practice.  In particular, Stephanie helps me see the postures in a new light, Sadie inspires me to always reach a little farther, and Lisa reminds me that I truly enjoy yoga.

Favorite Pose and Why:

I appreciate every single posture within the series.  Each one seems to come along just when I need it most.  My two current favorites are Triangle because it's hard every single time and Standing Bow because it helps me see that yoga is a practice in which no posture is ever mastered.

 Megan Conlay

Most Challenging Part of Your Yoga Practice:

Complete stillness between postures.

Person who has inspired you most:

My husband Mike. He consistently challenges me to be the best version of myself.

What is your teaching philosophy:

I want my teaching to help my students deepen their practice by not only helping them understand how to assume each posture but also by helping them enjoy the process.

How long have you been teaching yoga for:

The first class I taught was August 3, 2009 on my Triplets' 5th birthday!

Why is yoga important to you:

It is exercise I actually enjoy, it gives my time away from busy household, it helps relieve stress, and I always feel better after class than I did before.

ASK YOGI- Looking at our Yoga Roots

Have you ever wondered why we do Pranayama breathing at the beginning of every class?  Or what the Sanskrit names of yoga postures mean?  Or why we say Namaste?

The purpose of this column is to answer such questions about the language, rituals, and philosophy of yoga.  Let me be honest, I am not an expert on yoga philosophy!  But, after completing an intensive 200 hour teacher training in July 2010, it was clear I had lots of questions about yoga that go deeper than "can you show me how to get into that pose?"  Investigating these questions (and yours) will be the basis of this column.

Speaking of questions, here is one for you:  Did you know that the classical techniques of yoga go back more than 5,000 years?  However, the Hatha yoga we practice today was developed only 111 years ago, by Shri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) who developed an asana-based style of yoga because most of his students were teenage boys who required productive development of their strength and stamina.  Prior to the 1900's, the practice of yoga was not posture-based nor was it common for everyone to do it; rather yoga was practiced by sages who were focused on cultivating deep states of meditation via chanting and breathing (pranayama) to quiet the mind and eliminate suffering.  The sages wrote down the wisdom that came to them during meditation; the first of these ancient scripts were called the Vedas.  For thousands of years yoga philosophy, rituals (meditation, singing of mantras) evolved and many sages contributed to the debates and practices that eventually formed six major 'schools' of Yoga.

Current yoga instruction in the Western world has an almost totally exclusive focus on posture (asana) and contain very little of the past; many regular practitioners are unfamiliar with the rich philosophical traditions that inform yoga, and have never chanted a mantra or sat in meditation in a yoga class. While some of us are probably thankful we don't have to sing at HBHY, I know from conversations that many of you are curious about various aspects of yoga.

So, what about yoga do you want to know but were afraid to ask?

FEATURED POSTURE - Balancing Stick Pose

This 10 second posture, when undertaken correctly - uses every muscle in your body. Standing at the back of your mat, take a moment to calm your mind and focus your concentration. Often practitioners, weary from the previous standing poses tend to race Tuladandasana, so take a moment to give it the energy it really deserves.

Raise your arms above your head, interlace your fingers, point your index fingers and reach toward the ceiling contracting every muscle from your feet to your fingers. Lift your ankles and knees, tuck your hips into a neutral position contract your abdominal muscles, relax your shoulders back and down, neutralize the chin by straightening your head and place your ears between your lifted, extended arms.

Inhale and step forward onto your right foot, pause and level your hips. This is the most important part of the posture - most practitioners will initially raise the left hip as they lift the left leg behind them. The key to the posture is to keep your hips flat, square and equal as bring your upper body forward and lift your extended left leg. Keep the anchor right leg completely straight and you reach forward and back with your extended limbs in a straight line. Contract all muscles in your body as you extend into the posture, focusing your gaze five feet in front of you on the floor. Hold for ten seconds. Return and repeat on the other side.
