DECEMBER 2010

Greeting Huntington Beach Hot Yoga Family,

I hope everyone was able to share a nice Thanksgiving holiday weekend with your family and friends. Since last month's newsletter I have been overwhelmed by the individual feedback received regarding your lives - especially I had been quite hesitant to share my very personal experience, and how hot yoga has continued to help me through life's challenges. I would like to say thank you very much to you all as it has helped me realize how much we can help each other by sharing our common experiences as human beings, and has once again reminded me that we are never alone and we need each other to grow through life. I encourage you to please continue to share your feedback, as it is tremendously inspiring.

This month's newsletter will be the last of the year and my overall sense for the upcoming 2011-year will be one of change.  HBHY has recently added the Hot Yoga Power Flow class and due to the overwhelming positive student response, more classes will be added beginning Monday, January 3rd. We have also partnered with Lululemon Athletica in order to strengthen our commitment to the community. Each and every Sunday for the month of December, one of our HBHY yoga instructors will be teaching a free one hour yoga class at Lululemon Athletica retail store at Fashion Island from 9.30 am to 10.30am. Please stop by and take a class or just say hi to support one of our friendly instructors.

The next 30-day challenge will begin on Monday January 3, 2011. I encourage you to get the New Year started right and commit to this personal revolution! It is always inspiring to see so many students making positive contributions to themselves. Please sign up at the front desk!

I was recently reflecting on this past year as it was one of my most personally challenging, and I came to the conclusion that life is exactly what you make of it. As my wise, loving mother has always told me "you are exactly where you are supposed to be". I share that because there were plenty of times this year that I did not feel that way. Life has taught me that we are not the sum total of our circumstances but whom we choose to become as a result of the growth that occurs from our circumstances. My personal hot yoga practice continues to remind me that I am not a finished product in my yoga postures, I am a work in progress. I don't do yoga to get anywhere anymore, I do yoga so I can be present in my life now, there is simply nowhere to go because "I am exactly where I am supposed to be". Any other perception is a conflict with reality. The result to that approach is I enjoy my growth in my yoga practice much more as my mind battles less with where my body is at in that moment. Change is a constant and the more I realize that in yoga and in life, the happier I am. Thanks Mom for your constant unconditional love and support, you are my hero.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday season.

See you on your mat!

FEATURED STUDENT - Charlene Beach
Charlene BeachHOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE? My goal is to practice 3-4 times per week

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE? Yoga, for me, provides a refuge from  the confusion, and noise of the day.  I can't stay away from (I'm addicted to) the peace it provides.  I practice at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga because Jason and his staff take a personal interest in your practice from your first visit.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?
-Relaxed body, spirit, mind
-Increased energy level,concentration, and productivity
-Clearer mind and a feeling of refreshment.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE? I have a lot of favorite postures!  Standing head to knee is one - I think because it immediately follows half moon - and that's my least favorite  :)  I also enjoy Eagle pose.  It's the perfect mix of balance, strength, and meditation.

HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE? Hot yoga has impacted my life by providing me a solice away from the work, noise, and clutter of my every day life.  My practice gives me the energy to push forward in my career and my personal life.

A personal goal of mine is to one day earn a yoga teacher certification of my own and share with others the joy I have been able to find in my yoga practice.

FEATURED TEACHER - Christelle Reigner

MY HOMETOWN: Grenoble, France. I moved here over 10 years ago with the intention to learn English, but after college was over I got into teaching swimming and living the fun California lifestyle. I just wasn't brave enough to move back to the cold French Alps.

MY FIRST YOGA CLASS: Was in 2003 at the Hot Yoga studio that used to be in Costa Mesa.

MY MOST INFLUENTIAL TEACHER: Jason Wilkerson whose meticulous ways make me advance further in my teaching and practice week after week. Also Shiva Rea, who I can't wait to learn more from while spending 10 days doing yoga with her in India next March.

MY FAVORITE POSE AND WHY: Throughout my years of practice, I have found Camel to be the most beneficial pose. Not only does it stimulate the organs of the abdomen and heal all stomach related troubles, but it also purifies the heart chakra from all negative feelings and tensions we may have picked up from the outside world.

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR YOGA PRACTICE: Having the dedication and determination to stay in each posture for the full length that the posture requires because I know it is in the last 10 seconds that we build the most strength.

BOOK YOU ARE CURRENTLY READING: Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert who also wrote Eat, Pray and Love.  I highly recommend it to anyone who is in a serious relationship.  I am also reading The Yoga of Jesus by Paramahansa Yogananda. I read a few pages every day with my boyfriend Ryan. It has really helped us raise our level of consciousness and has improved our lives in every area.

SECRET COMFORT FOODS: Cheese, especially the melted kind, like in a Quesadilla or a grilled cheese sandwich. Yummy!!!

MOVIE THAT HAS CHANGED THE WAY YOU THINK: "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. She reveals the law of attraction which is the greatest power in the universe.

YOUR LOCAL RETREAT: Paramahansa Yogananda's Self Realization Center in Los Angeles.

AN UNFINISHED DREAM: Last summer I started teaching a Beach Yoga Class. It was such a fun and empowering experience for everyone to practice yoga right on the sand, reconnecting with mother nature, and bringing our bodies back into balance. I can't wait to start it again next year as soon as I get back from India in April. Everyone from the studio is welcome.

WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY? Love and accept your body, never judge your awesome self.  Trust the process: You're only job is to get up and drive yourself to the studio; this is your only responsibility for shifting your life. Let the science of Yoga heal your body from the inside out for a transformation that will stay with you forever.

I plan on taking a 200 hour teacher training next summer so that I get certified to teach that amazing hot power flow class which I believe compliments the Hot Yoga series tremendously. It emphasizes upper body and core strength, sculpting our bodies more extensively.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING HOT YOGA? I have been teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga for over two years and I recently started giving private lessons for anybody who likes to do Yoga in the convenience of their own home.

THE MOST IMPRESSIVE PERSON YOU HAVE EVER MET: My great friend Lilia Birem, whose spiritual coaching and healing truly changed my life. Her work has supported me in making profound shifts in my consciousness and self-awareness. She uses a powerful healing process called "Integrative Soul Technology." It fundamentally changed the way I experience myself and others, and helped me express and share my gifts with the world. I would strongly recommend to anyone a spiritual coach like Lilia, who can help them make necessary breakthroughs to achieve their highest potential, as well as to attract and create loving relationships.

Together we will soon be offering workshops for healing and growth on all levels: physical (yoga), emotional and spiritual (lecture and introduction to integrative soul technology.)

WHY IS YOGA IMPORTANT TO YOU? Practicing yoga on a regular basis has bettered my life in every way. I have become a calmer and happier person in my everyday life and it also took care of all my little physical troubles such as sleeping and unhealthy eating habits (I lost about 30 pounds since I became consistent in my practice.)  Coming from a place of quite low self-esteem and body image, yoga has taught me how to love my body and treat myself with kindness and has set me on the journey of unstoppable evolution.

FAVORITE HOBBIES: Well let me think!! PRACTICE AT HUNTINGTON BEACH HOT YOGA

I am very happy to say that I finally became the regular practitioner that I've always wanted to be. I've been practicing everyday since the beginning of the last 30 day challenge. These challenges are great to get you to a point where you just can't stop going!!!  Thanksgiving was the last day of my own little 60 day challenge. Whoop Whoop!!

FEATURED POSTURE - Standing Bow Pulling

Standing Bow Pulling Pose
Dandayamana Dhanurasana

As with all standing poses, the key to stability is in the physical and mental set up, and your focused breathing. Most importantly, remember that the intention of this pose is to reverse the forward spinal flexion of the previous pose. This is a back bend.

Stand tall with your toes and heels together. With an inhale, lift your left arm, palm facing forward and fingers extended together toward the ceiling. Contract the quadriceps of your left leg and bend your right leg lifting your foot towards your butt. Catch your right foot in your right hand with your palm facing out. Bring your knees back together, straighten your spine, stand tall with your shoulders back and your chin up. Reach towards the ceiling with your left arm, keep your hips square to the front mirror, and begin to kick your right foot back and up as soon as you are ready. Your kick should drive this pose. Keep your body upright until you can see your right foot above your head. Once you have kicked your foot higher than your head, reach forward with your left arm. Your right shoulder should roll backwards, and your left shoulder should extend forward as you stare down your left arm towards your fingertips. Ensure you abdominal muscles remain contracted, and your standing left leg stays strong, contracted with knee lifted, and straight. In full expression you will look like a beautiful lithe ballerina. Common errors include moving forward before full expression, tilting the right hip up (not keeping square to the front mirror) and not keeping the standing leg completely straight and engaged.

Benefits

Develo ps balance, strength and flexibility. Improves standing leg strength and spinal elasticity via spinal compression. Increases circulation to the heart and lungs. Helps lower-back pain. Opens the diaphragm, lungs and shoulders. Tones the arms and legs. Improves cardiovascular system. Increases circulation to heart and lungs.

THE SUN SALUTION SERIES
Sun salutations can energize and warm you, even on the darkest, coldest winter day.  ~Carol Krucoff

The Sun Salutation asana series (sSurya Namaskar) was traditionally practiced outside facing Eastward, toward the rising sun. Surya is the Hindu word for Sun, and Namas can be translated as to bow, or obey.  This series of linked postures is thought to be 2500 years old. From a physiological view Its design is intended to lengthen, strengthen, flex and extend the muscles, distributing Prana flow through the body. Performing this series aerobically generates heat and warmth in the body, and awareness of breath and intention. A more spiritual consideration would be to practice the series in humble adoration of light and insight of self, to practice in the spirit of devotion and awareness turned inward to the heart. Physically reaching towards the sky we are inhaling gratitude and abundance, exhaling as we bow down we are humbly relinquishing self importance.

One of the most significant differences between the traditional Bikram series of hot yoga, and the Dayton Method is the early inclusion of the Sun Salutation series as an integral element of the warm-up. Philosophically this puts greater emphasis on the "opening-up" of all the major joints prior to commencing the more static poses. Most importantly, executing the Sun Salutation series at the beginning of class encourages practitioners to focus on synchronizing breath and movement together in constant fluid motion. A practice that remains important through the remainder of the class, but is most easily emphasized through the Sun Salutation movement.

TEACHER TRAINING 2011 - Earlybird Registration!
One of the key elements that differentiates our studio and community from other yoga studios is the sense of "family" and quality of the teachers. The Dayton Method of Hot Yoga Teacher Training was developed and trademarked by our very own Jason Wilkerson.

You can access these newly released details by clicking the link below. More importantly, ask ANY of our instructors how the teacher training has changed their lives and if it is a worthwhile experience!

STUDIO MANNERS

We hope you agree that the new mats have made student spacing in the studio easier. If each student places their mat within each floor mat space, there is equal and linear spacing throughout the studio space. What remains challenging, especially when the class is busy, is finding eye contact with the front mirror for each student, all the way to the back row. To assist we ask when you stand and prepare for the start of class and Pranayama breathing, that you look behind you and see if you have thoughtfully placed your mat so that as much as possible both you and the student/s behind you can see their own forehead in the front mirror. If everyone takes a moment to consider the focus of their fellow practitioners, our shared focus will improve everyone's practice.

Namaste.
FINAL THOUGHT

Winning is important to me, but what brings me real joy is the experience of being fully engaged in whatever I'm doing.
