AUGUST 2010
Greetings,

July has been a busy month for the studio with our new Teacher Trainees nearly at the end of their 4 week journey. Please join us in celebrating their commitment and accomplishment at the graduation party on August 7. Through mutual support of their desire to further their understanding of the practice and yours, we will together build a stronger community and studio. Just one year ago we celebrated the graduation of last year's class which included Megan, Aundy, Vivian, Sadie and Barbara.

In one year from now what will you wish you had started one year ago? You will see our Student of the Month Leo Cruz has made a commitment to himself to complete 110 days of continuous practice. Why not make August the month to set yourself a challenge related to your practice? It could be something as simple as "be more mindful" or "start to learn toe stand". As you will see from our featured teacher Sadie's comments below, our instructors welcome the opportunity to spend time with you after class to answer any questions and assist with deepening your yoga understanding.

We encourage you to pick one element of your practice to focus on this month and share your intention with our community in the studio and on our Facebook wall. Through the creation and sharing of intention we can encourage each other and build a stronger community and studio.

FEATURED TEACHER - SADIE EPPES
SADIE EPPES HOMETOWN: Corona, California

CHILDHOOD ASPIRATION: To become a professional ballet dancer

FIRST YOGA CLASS: A yoga/pilates class at the gym

MOST INFLUENTIAL TEACHER: Jason Wilkerson

THE DEFINING MOMENT WHEN YOU REALIZED YOU WANTED TO TEACH YOGA: My passion for hot yoga hit me hard and quick! I suddenly knew that I wanted this to be apart of my life forever. I wanted to be more than a student, I wanted to share this practice with others and hopefully inspire them to WORK hard, and challenge their bodies.

FAVORITE POSITION AND WHY: Standing Head to Knee.  Because it challenges me every time! I love feeling my leg muscles burning! I am working on being able to kick out and get into final expression in the beginning of the first minute and staying there. One day!...

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR YOGA PRACTICE: The back strengthening series! I have always had to work extra hard on back strength.

BOOK YOU ARE CURRENTLY READING: Nefertiti, a historical fiction.

SECRET COMFORT FOODS: Popcorn and frozen yogurt.

YOUR LOCAL RETREAT: Carlsbad. My sister lives there with her husband and baby boy. I love spending time with them when I can.
SadieDance
YOUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: I strive to motivate my students to WORK HARD. I like to make them push harder than they think they are able...because when they do push, they always can go further, hold longer, breath deeper. It's my hope to help in being a driving force to encourage hard work, even when they feel like they are not able to go past their "limits". I also love when students ask me questions about poses after class. I feel there is a lot I'm not able to touch on with just dialogue during class. When I have one-on-one time with the student, I can give them much more information and tips that I think would be helpful for them.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING HOT YOGA: Nearly one year.

WHY YOGA IS IMPORTANT TO YOU: Yoga is another way for me to challenge my body and my mind!  I love to sweat!

MOST PASSIONATE SUBJECT: To put it simply, I'm passionate about being...passionate! Be driven. Work hard. And make sure you invest your life in whatever fulfills you.

FAVORITE HOBBIES: Dancing, yoga-ing, traveling, lying in the sun, baking, snowboarding, being with friends and family.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START PRACTICING AT HBHY? I first started practicing in July of last year, so I have just celebrated my first anniversary!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE? After completing 26 days of the 30 day challenge last October I had to stop due to an injury. This was extremely disappointing for me and so as soon as I was able to return to my practice I made a commitment to myself to complete 110 days of continuous practice. By August 1st I will be at day 97. I am not able to complete every class every day, but I show up and stay in the room and meditate even if I am lying down. This commitment is very important to me. Once the 110 days are complete I expect to return to my normal practice schedule of 4-5 days per week.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS TO YOU? From day one of my practice at HBHY I started to notice a change in my attitude. I am more patient. I feel like I am a better person. The HBHY community is a huge part of why I love to practice at this studio. I feel like Jason and the other instructors embrace us into their family and I look forward to their instruction and encouragement - pushing all of us to be the best we can be - every time I come to the studio.

HOW HAS YOUR PRACTICE CHANGED YOUR LIFE? I am certainly healthier as I have lost a lot of weight. I have more energy, am less tired, and more mentally alert. I am more aware of my body and mind and have a more positive outlook to my life in general.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE? The most challenging postures - for me triangle and camel - are my favorite postures because I feel great satisfaction in the progress I see in my body and focus through my practice.
STANDING SEPARATE LEG HEAD TO KNEE POSE
Standing Sep Leg Head to KneeDandayamana Bibhaktapada Janushirasana

Primary Action:
Stand facing the side mirror. Inhale and raise your arms over your head, cross your thumbs in prayer and take a 3 foot step to the right. Turn to face the back wall, square your hips to the back wall and angle your back (left) foot to face the side mirror at 45 degrees. Take a moment to set your intention, inhale, and as you exhale, SLOWLY curl forward, chin to chest, to place your hands on the floor on either side of your front leg. Press your forehead to your knee. Keep your eyes open and breathe (short shallow breaths).

If you cannot reach your forehead to your knee, bend your knee to meet your forehead. The importance of this connection cannot be over emphasized. In order to reach the intention of the posture, and compress the thyroid gland, you must press your chin to your chest and your head to your knee (not your shin, not your thigh). Whilst looking up at your abdominal wall remember to contract those muscles to support the curled spine and check that your hips are square. Contracting the quadriceps and inner thigh muscles of both legs will strengthen the posture and improve your balance.

Exit the posture SLOWLY through an inhalation, left hip pressed forward, reaching arms forward and up to full overhead extension before rotating on heels back to face the side mirror, and repeat posture on the other side.

Benefits:
This posture improves the flexibility of the spine, shoulders, hips and sciatic nerve. It stretches the tendons and ligaments of the legs whilst working the abs (rectus abdominus and obliques) iliosoas, quads, deltoids, trapezius and biceps. If these muscles are engaged and contracted during the entire posture it will slim the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks and thighs.

Internally, the posture balances the thyroid and pituitary glands and helps to maintain healthy blood sugar balance aiding diabetes. It stimulates the endocrine, reproductive and digestive systems compressing the pancreas, liver and kidneys.

Finally, this posture Improves circulation to legs and brain. Improves memory. Relieves migraines headaches. Helps offset manic depression. So in short - a posture worth doing every day!
