| Feature Pose:Triangle Trikanasana
The Sanskrit word tri means three and kona
means corner or angle. Thus "three corner or three angle posture" is
often called the triangle posture. The Bikram, or Hot Yoga version incorporates a deep lunge and differs from the traditional hatha straight legged Warrior pose.
The triangle posture is the only posture
that improves every muscle, joint, tendon, and internal organ in the
body. It opens the hips, shoulders, chest and is designed to develop overall strength and flexibility.
Set up is crucial, with particular focus abdominal contraction for core stability, on moving the feet hip distance apart with heels in a straight line, and on keeping the weight centered through the lunge. Feet should be flat against the mat (not curled with toes "gripping"), gradual strength increases will reduce the slipping! |
 | YOGA RETREAT
|
Being Yoga Retreat Tulum Mexico
If you are looking for a mindful, peaceful, focused yoga retreat, I encourage you to consider the following Bikram retreat hosted by my friends and fellow Bikram yogis, Robin and Arley from Being Yoga Studio in Burlingame, CA. The retreat week long retreat will take place in Tulum Mexico from September 18-25, 2010.
The meaning of yoga is to bring together specifically, to join body, mind and personality with the Divine. The Divine has two characteristics: power and consciousness, which produce and regulate all objective phenomena.
Robin has over 13 years experience teaching Hatha Yoga and Arley has over 40 years teaching meditation and yoga philosophy.
The retreat will incorporate Hatha Yoga (the power part) with Robin and Meditation (the consciousness part) with Arley.
More details can be found on their website Beingyoga.net

 | What is the meaning of "Namaste"?
|
"I honor the place in you that is of love, of truth and of light. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, then we are one."
"Yoga" means union, and so in the true spirit of "yoga" and "Namaste" we are pleased to envelop the intention and practice of every student and teacher in the warm community that is our yoga studio.

 | Featured Teacher - Aundy Weeks
|
Andrea Weeks | Andrea, or Aundy as she likes to be called, began practicing yoga in
2000 when faced with back surgery. Opting to use yoga in assistance to
her health, she quickly began a home practice. Upon the opening of
Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, she hopped into her first class and
thoroughly enjoyed the different group experience.Hometown: I am never
sure how to answer this question because I want to say "Huntington Beach" as that is where my home and heart is. I moved every four years growing up so my "home town"
constantly changed until I moved here in 1985, so I am claiming in
writing that Huntington Beach is my home town! Childhood
aspiration: I always wanted to be a dancer and veterinarian (and
secretly a rock star). How I ended up an accountant I will never know! First yoga class: My first yoga class was at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga with Jason nearly 7 years ago. I then took a self imposed hiatus for an
extended period but now I am back and not planning on any further
interruptions! Defining moment when you realized
you wanted to teach yoga was: I originally signed up for the teacher
training as a means to further my personal growth. It was during this
training that I was struck with a passion for the Dayton Method and the
studio. I wanted to share with others what I had learned during
training. Favorite pose and why: As crazy as this
sounds, it is Ustrasana or camel pose ... it is challenging and gives me a
sense of freedom. Most challenging part of your yoga practice: This has to be Trikanasana or
triangle. I always think that I am doing it right and then another
instructor will come and tweak me just a bit. I know that I am not doing
it as correctly as I should. It has always been this way with this
pose, and I am diligent about getting it 100% correct with practice,
practice, practice!! Person who has
inspired you the most: My mother. She is the most amazing women I have ever
known. She is kind, humble and extremely talented. She is a world
renowned kaleidoscope maker, and really not too many people can say
that! Book you are currently reading: Well this is a
bit embarrassing but the truth will set you free...Motley Crue the Dirt...I
am a yogi, but I am also rock n roll at heart. This book lets me
re-live the insanity of my younger days. Secret comfort food: Chips in every style! I have spent my life testing the
theory that you can't have just one...and all my years of research have
proven that is true. Movie that has
changed the way you think: Movies tend to have a temporary effect on
me, so I can't really say that one has changed the way I think... Cause you feel
most passionate about: Anything to do with animals and their welfare. Your local
retreat: It would have to be the studio. I refer to it as my "happy
place." I also am also so fortunate to have the Pacific Ocean right down
the street from me. There is nothing better than a good book a nice
chair and the calming sound of the waves. I would have to say that my
local retreat is right here in Huntington Beach!! An unfinished dream: I don't believe that dreams are ever finished. They are
constantly evolving and once we have achieved a dream it leads to
another. All of my dreams are a work in progress. What is your
favorite expression? "Just be... just breathe" What is your
teaching philosophy? I strive to bring a peaceful yet motivating energy
to every class and to focus on the mental part of the practice in
conjunction with the physical. I also believe that staying very
present in the moment while teaching is part of my responsibility to the
students. Always remaining teachable will allow me to improve as an
instructor. How long have you been teaching yoga? Since January 2010 Why is yoga important to you? Yoga has
played a huge role recently in my life by allowing me to connect mind
and body. It brings me a sense of calm, kindness and peace. It makes
me a better more grateful person. Most
influential teacher: Jordan Severs' style and dialogue has really spoken
to me as a teacher, and hopefully this is evident in my teaching style
because I admire her. Favorite hobbies:
Horseback riding, skiing (both snow and water), reading and hanging with
friends (if that can be considered a hobby)!

 | Student of the Month
| Our July Student of the month is Katey Becker.
When did you start practicing Hot Yoga? I have been practicing hot yoga for about three and a half years now. Prior to joining HB Hot Yoga my only prior yoga experience had been in college where my primary focus was tennis, which did not leave much time for anything else.
How often do you practice? I really try to get to the studio at least three times per week.
Why do you practice, what are the primary benefits of your experience? I practice as a "getaway" from the stress of work and the business of my life. I like the rationale given in class "90 minutes to devote to yourself and your health". As a result of my practice I have been able to work through old shoulder and knee pain, and it has really helped to open up my muscles and increase my flexibility. I definitely did not stretch much during my years playing tennis so am making up for that now!
How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life? It is a great way for me to relieve stress. It helps to keep me balanced. I've changed my eating habits to become healthier overall.
What is your favorite posture? I would have to say my favorite posture is standing forehead to knee. I am still striving to extend my legs straight out (on both sides) but one day it will come together. I like the challenge of it.
