Mark your calendars...
The Teacher Training is coming up July 8th!
Sun Salutation Backbend Lunge

Feature Pose:
Half Moon Pose with Hands to Feet
Ardha Chandrasana with Pada Hastasana

This pose is actually two poses in one (it's done in combination with 'Hands to Feet'). In combination, these poses warm up your spine in every direction. In half moon pose, you stretch one side of your body while contracting and strengthening the other; reaching side to side before going into a back bend compression of the spine. The 'Hands to Feet' pose that follows is a forward fold. The idea is to elongate the spine outward through the crown of your head as you fold in the pose.

June 2010

Greetings,

Starting Thursday, July 8th, our third Dayton Method Teacher Training will begin. It is an exciting time for us as we invite new teachers into the studio to become a part of our HBHY family! As any of our instructors here will tell you, giving of yoga to others is both a humbling and invigorating experience. What's better than sharing your love of yoga with the great variety of students who walk through our door everyday? As regular practitioners, you are already aware of the positive effects your yoga practice has had on your lives. We continue to encourage all our students to look into teacher training. It is a fantastic opportunity to dedicate time to your own well-being and concentrate on furthering your own practice. In the end, as you spend your time giving to others, you may realize how much you are actually giving to yourself.

"He who experiences the unity of life sees his own self in all beings, and all beings in his own self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye." --Buddha

Namaste,
Jason, Stephanie, Lourdes, Jordan, Erica, Harmony, Laura S., Lisa, Christelle, Sadie, Megan, Vivian, Barbara, Andrea, and Allison

Spend your afternoon perfecting your practice! All 28 postures including both breathing exercises will be studied in depth with three of our excellent instructors.

JASON WILKERSON
The owner and senior instructor of Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, established May 2003. Jason was born in Huntington Beach, CA. He graduated from USC in 1992 with a B.S. in Business Administration with a focus in entrepreneurship. He is a certified Bikram Method hatha yoga instructor graduating from Bikram's Yoga College in India 1996 and from Bikram's advanced training course in 1997 and 1998. Jason served as the Director of Bikram's Yoga College of India in San Francisco during the late 1990's and taught in numerous Bikram Yoga studios in the Bay Area for seven years before opening Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in 2003.

His formidable years stem from learning and teaching with Bikram's senior instructors in San Francisco. He is well versed with technique, alignment, and progression of the Hot Yoga series yet understands and teaches the mental and emotional aspects to the practice. He pays great attention to detail. He has excellent observational skills and intuitively helps people understand the series through hands-on adjustments. Jason's rich experience in teaching people of all ages, abilities, and body types allows him to connect and teach everyone from beginners to advanced students.

JORDAN SEVERS
Jordan has been practicing yoga since 2005. Her first yoga class was at a gym and her interest and desire to improve her practice pushed her toward a yoga studio. She first began attending classes at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in April 2006 and has been practicing ever since.

Yoga has had such a profound impact of Jordan's life that she decided after two years of consistent practicing it was time to take the next step and become an instructor. During July of 2007 she completed an intensive 200-hour training through YogaWorks and began teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in September of 2007. The following summer when Huntington Beach Hot Yoga offered a teacher training, Jordan decided the extra guidance would be beneficial for her teaching skills. She spent July-August of 2008 once again doing an intensive 200-hour training, gaining a deeper understanding of the Dayton method. Yoga has had an exceedingly positive influence in her life and she cherishes having the opportunity to share it with others.

LISA NEWCOMB
Lisa Newcomb began teaching classes at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in 2008 after three years of experience and practice. Yoga is among the key elements that enable her to find balance while living a well-rounded, healthy, and active lifestyle. After her first class she was surprised and challenged  by both the mental and physical demands a 90 minute yoga session has to offer. With this in mind, Lisa approaches her classes with a caring, energetic, and free spirited attitude.

Lisa earned her degree from Cal State Long Beach, with a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Since childhood one of her many goals was to become and educator. In 2008 she achieved this goal and currently teaches for a local school district. Her travels have taken her to Asia, South America, and Europe. During her quest to reveal what the world has to offer, she found herself discovering her inner drive and purpose to help others. She has been comforted by the fact that she can make friends anywhere, even without a common denominator such as language. Among the many that frequent Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, Lisa loves the warmth and family elements she feels when she walks through the door. To her, HBHY is more than a Yoga studio. It represents a devotion to personal excellence, friendship, and overall well being.

Student of the Month

Our June Student of the Month is Shirley Karina!

Shirley is originally from Epworth, Iowa!

  • When did you start practicing hot yoga?
"I started almost two and a half years ago. I had heard of Huntington Beach Hot Yoga and honestly the idea didn't appeal to me. A friend talked me into trying it with her for the first time. Turns out she never showed up and I took my first class without her! It wasn't love at first sight, it was like nothing I had ever done before. It was more like one of those movies you have to think about once you leave --and then it dawns on you that you actually enjoyed it."
  • How often do you practice?
"I have found four times a week is perfect. If I can fit it in I go more."
  • Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"Hot Yoga is more of a healing medium for me, I don't do it for exercise. I was in a pretty bad car accident a few years back and went through 18 months of physical therapy. I am still left with tight muscles and limited movement, especially in my neck and hips. Yoga has helped me to slowly gain a greater range of motion. I am not plagued as often with pain and stiffness. Someday I hope to 'heal' myself."
  • How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"Hot Yoga is very humbling. I have to almost laugh at myself because of what I cannot do (yet!). As a former competitive bodybuilder, I always thought of myself as being pretty tough. I can lift a lot of weight but I have a hard time standing on one leg! I really enjoy the people I have met at the studio, the great instructors, and how clean the place is! "
  • What's your favorite posture?
"My least favorite is anything balancing on one leg. My favorite? ...Maybe walking out the door! I work at home as a graphic designer and sit at a computer much of the day. I love the 11:30 class, makes me take a break, clear my head, and come back to work more productive and energized."
