Sun Salutation Backbend Lunge

Feature Pose:
Sun Salutation Pose
Surya Namaskar

Sun Salutations, also known as "Salute to the Sun", is a flowing series of 12 poses. An ancient and entire yoga practice in itself incorporating all systems of the body. The system stimulates the abdominal organs, wakes up the spine, builds heat and unleashes held energy. Arms, wrists, spine are strengthened and the chest opened. Sun Salutations develops strength, flexibility, grace, speed, alertness, and coordination. Movements coordinated with the breath increase awareness of breath and flow. The system warms and prepares the body for the class.
May 2010

Greetings,

We are so excited to be celebrating our 7th anniversary on May 3rd. Thank you to all of the students who have made Huntington Beach Hot Yoga what it is today, a community of fun, caring, and energetic people with one big thing in common: we love to sweat! It is amazing to see both old and new faces everday, and to be given the gift to guide you, instruct you, and help you grow in your hot yoga practice. We are forever grateful to have the chance to continue this in 2010. This year will hopefully be a year of wonderful changes for us, as we look to bring in some positive additions to the studio. Stay tuned!

We also want to give a big thank you to everyone who attended our photography class on April 28th. The results were impressive and we couldn't be happier.

A Message From Jason

I am tremendously proud of the community of yogis that we have assembled at the studio. Huntington Beach Hot Yoga has been a real gift in my life for the last seven years and it only feels more and more rewarding each year to be able to give my love of yoga to people whom I can see receiving such major life changes as a result of the 28 postures and 2 breathing exercises. We are so lucky to have access to such healing medicine. My dream has always been to be able to share this yoga with others and noting makes me more proud than to see your smiling faces each and every day. Thank you for enriching my life and continuously reminding me that true peace and happiness comes from not what we have on the outside but in how we grow inside. I appreciate and admire all of the teachers and students whom have been a part of HBHY as you have all had such a positive contribution to my life.

A Life Changing Experience

Hold on a moment! Your first thought as you see "Teacher Training" may be that you're not interested. No way! But give it some due consideration. When I first saw the signs go up for the training in July 2009 my immediate thoughts were "too much time and too much money". Yet the idea was still somewhat appealing. Once I started looking at the fees as an investment into a lifetime of teaching opportunity they didn't seem as daunting. Although the time away from my family would be significant, it was only a month invested toward that same lifetime of teaching goal.

Before training, I was a stay-at-home mom in need of a little extra income and something to do that didn't involve my four kids. I already knew I loved practicing at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, but I wasn't exactly the fitness instructor type. Mostly, I just wanted to further my practice by gaining a better understanding of the postures. Throughout the training, I achieved that goal, but gained more than I ever would have anticipated. I LOVE teaching Dayton Method Hot Yoga! I'm stronger and more fit than I have ever been. Everyday I learn more about this practice and I try to translate that into my teaching. The people here make this job spectacular. The teachers as well as the students are the most fun and genuine people I have ever worked with.

So think about it! Ask some of your teachers about their training experiences. Then let go of the limitations you put on yourself because the likelihood is that you ARE fit enough, smart enough, committed enough, and flexible enough. You can make the time. I think you will love teaching as much as I do!

Student of the Month

Our May Student of the Month is Donia Hodge!

Donia is originally from Huntington Beach!

  • When did you start practicing hot yoga?
"August of 2006. I had been driving by the studio for years and one day I stopped by to pick up information; I went the next day and it's been a part of my life ever since" [Donia has taken over 870 classes! Very Impressive].
  • How often do you practice?
"I would practice hot yoga six to seven days a week if i could, but I work full time, and I have two kids. I am usually able to make it about five times a week."
  • Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"My most significant benefit from hot yoga is how good I feel afterward. It's like a giant reset button for me. No matter how I feel going into class I always feel good when I'm finished. I love to go in the morning because it's a great start to my day. It also helps me to keep my crazy schedule and my families schedule in balance. "
  • How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"Practicing hot yoga has been a positive influence on my life three-fold. Yoga is something you can do as often as you like, it doesn't hurt your body, it works with your body and it can actually help to heal your body. I am always working on some issues with my back and it really does help! ...Another way yoga has changed my life is that my family also practices. My husband and my son both practice with me. My daughter has gone but the heat upsets her stomach, so she hasn't gone in a long time, I am not giving up on her yet! I think it's great that my kids are open to the benefits of yoga and hopefully they can walk away with some life skills... Finally, I have met some wonderful people and have made some great friendships!"
  • What's your favorite posture?
"My favorite posture is a tie between Camel and Pigeon, I like them both because they are very relaxing. My least favorite posture would have to be awkward."
