January 2010
It is hard to believe that 2010 is already here! This is the time of year for new beginnings, fresh starts, and New Year's resolutions. What makes this New Year significant is that we are saying goodbye to 2009 and ushering in a new decade. How do your goals stack up against previous resolutions? How are your goals integrated into your hot yoga practice? Embrace the coming New Year as an opportunity to better yourself and the world around you. The simple commitment of eating right and staying hydrated can make all the difference in not only your hot yoga practice, but other aspects of your life as well. Let's make 2010 the year for success, emotional success above all else. With a simple shift in mindset, you have the ability to conquer any goal you make this year.
"The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems." -Mahatma Gandhi
January is often a month when the studio welcomes many new students. Let's remember that we are all a part of this community, no matter how advanced we are in our hot yoga practice. Please welcome new students with smiles and words of encouragement. Share the space. A full room might seem intimidating but often provides the best energy to carry you through a tough class.
Thank you for being a part of our community and we look forward to sharing the coming year with you!

Inspiration for the New Year: 100 Days
|
"One of the most important thing I learned through this experience was to 'accept what your body gives you that day'. The instructors say this often in class but it never really sunk in until now."
Kelly Trettin finished one hundred straight days of yoga on December 8th, 2009. She has been practicing yoga on and off for over 3 years but didn't get serious with her practice until almost a year ago. She started the 30-Day Challenge back on August 31st and reached the 30-Day goal on her birthday, September 29th, " It was a nice birthday present to myself!" After the 30 days were up, Kelly kept going, with some inspiration of her own..."My aunt was diagnosed with cancer around Thanksgiving in 2007. She
passed away on Halloween this past fall. I did the one hundred days of
yoga for her. I was very close with my aunt, and when she was sick, she
didn't have the ability to do things like yoga. I felt that if I had
the choice and the ability to come everyday, then I should take
advantage of it." One of the things Kelly learned through this experience was to accept what your body gives you. "Each day was different, it felt like everything was shifting in my body. Different parts would be sore on different days. I set out with the mindset of advancing in postures tremendously, when in reality it takes time. I saw a ton of improvement in my Fixed Firm and Standing Head to Knee though!"
Kelly admits that it was difficult at first to squeeze yoga into her schedule every day. "I had to conquer my fear of morning classes and bite the bullet with a few 6ams." Once she shifted her mindset though, practicing yoga every day evolved into a routine, "Once I began to think -WHEN am I going to yoga today? Not, should I go to yoga today? -it became a lot easier. There was no choice, just the choice of which class to attend."

Student of the Month
|

Our January Student of the Month is Isabel Incera! Isabel is originally from Huntington Beach!
- When did you start practicing hot yoga?
"February 2007. Before hot yoga I was active at the gym, practicing yoga there and swimming a lot. I was looking for a different workout. I saw the hot yoga sign and decided to give it a try. I was hooked right away!"
- How often do you practice?
"Four time a week is my goal. When I am on vacation from work, I try to practice five to six times a week. During the school year I usually only make it three times a week though.I look forward to time off because I know that I will be able to make it into the studio more often. I think I'm addicted to hot yoga!"
- Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"Hot yoga makes me feel great. When I initially started coming to the studio I lost a lot of weight! Hot yoga gives me a great workout and I feel so much stronger and leaner than before. I love how I can get to the studio with a million things on my mind and once the class begins everything just fades away."
- How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"Hot yoga is a great stress reliever for me. I feel that I am much more calm and less stressed than before I started practicing, especially when it comes to work -I'm a 3rd grade teacher. My patience with the kids has really improved. "
- What's your favorite posture?
"My favorite posture is rabbit, especially after a really hot class. Rabbit stretches the tightest areas of my back. Triangle is my least favorite and favorite posture in a way because it is the hardest for me! I'm always glad when it's over." |
