December 2009
Greetings!
Huntington Beach Hot Yoga would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. The month of December can be one of the busiest months of the year! Holiday parties and traditions added to the hustle and bustle of work and family commitments can mean a full schedule. This is also the time of year when your hot yoga practice is most valuable. There is a chill in the air and it may be harder to get out for that run or walk. Some people are gearing up for that New Year's resolution. Some want to look their best for that special holiday party. Whatever your motivation is this season it is important to get to the studio. Maintaining a weekly hot yoga practice despite the added pressure from the holiday schedule is just the thing we need to help us navigate through the holiday season.
Happy Holidays and see you at the studio!

Anatomy & Physiology
|
The spinal column is the single most important part of the skeletal system to maintain and keep healthy for a long, pain-free life.
There are three main section to the spine: 1. Cervical -The seven vertebrae of the neck. 2. Thoracic -Twelve chest vertebrae supporting the ribcage. 3. Lumbar -Five vertebrae of the lower back.
Pelvis and Sacrum -There are also five bones fused together to form the Sacrum, as well as three to five bones that form the coccyx or tailbone.
There are five movements of the human spine: 1. Flexion -The most natural kind of movement is the curling forward that our spine performs in the womb. In everyday life, people flex their spines to tie their shoes. Yoga students replicate this curve in poses such as Child's pose and Forward folding. 2. Extension -Upward stretching, making the spine long, such as reaching high above your head for something in a cupboard. Yogis exaggerate the movement of extension to back-bends such as Cobra and Camel pose. 3. Axial Rotation -When you turn around in the car seat to reach something behind you, your spine is doing an axial rotation. In yoga class, this is simply referred to as "twisting", the Spinal twist posture. 4/5. Lateral Flexion -This is a side-to-side bend such as leaning to the side to pick up a suitcase. There is right lateral flexion and left lateral flexion. Yoga students practice lateral flexion in poses such as Half-moon.
Some of the best postures for spine health are Cobra, Locust, Full locust, Floor bow, Standing bow, and Spinal twist.

Student of the Month |
Our December Student of the Month is Abby Peavey! Abby is originally from Huntington Beach!
- When did you start practicing hot yoga?
"I started practicing hot yoga about three years ago. Right around the time that I came to the conclusion that I really needed to be in touch with myself."
- How often do you practice?
"I try to get to the studio at least 3 to 4 times a week, or as often as my hungry husband will allow me -I don't just practice yoga well, I am also an excellent cook!"
- Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"I practice for a number of reasons...mostly flexibility, inner and outer strength. Hot yoga is a major stress reliever as well. Primary benefits? NAMASTE, need I say more!?"
- How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"I'm not quite sure how hot yoga has changed my life, but I do know this...I am no longer known in my family as 'OCD'...just 'OCD Jr.' All joking aside, I am a big fan of hot yoga. Not only have I experienced inner peace and superb health benefits, yoga gives me an opportunity to focus on myself, sort out my thoughts, and relax. I truly am addicted!"
- What's your favorite posture?
"I'd have to say that my favorite posture is triangle. Not sure why, I just think that I'm good at it. It is extremely challenging and feels great to get past that one." |
