In the month of July, consider dedicating your hot yoga classes to practicing patience. Most of us have become impatient at some point in our practice. We want to be more flexible in a certain area of our body, be able to do a challenging pose, or recover from an injury sooner. But getting impatient can be poisonous to our practice.
Patience requires us to stay in the present moment, fully experiencing where we are right now -- rather than longing for some unattained goal. Embrace your mind and body in this moment, be patient with yourself and what you're capable of doing in class each day -- no matter if you feel like you're stagnant or worsening in some poses. Oftentimes, we are most challenged in postures just before a big breakthrough!
Gratitude is a great way to combat impatience. Strive to be thankful for the time to go to class, for the poses you are able to do well, and all the rest of life's blessings. In being thankful for what you have, instead of wishing for something in the future, you will cultivate patience in your hot yoga practice, and likely achieve improvements you may not have even thought possible.

Teacher Training begins July 9th |
July marks the commencement of the second annual Dayton Method Teacher Training at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga from July 9th until August 8 th.
The Teacher Training is designed for students who have a passion for practicing hot yoga, the desire to instruct others, and a thirst for a deeper understanding of self. Teacher trainees devote 10 hour days, 6 days per week including 2 hot yoga classes per day, philosophy and anatomy lectures. Last year was a very successful experience as it has given the studio more instructors and therefore, more classes to offer to the public. It is the foundation to the growth of the studio. I am also very proud of the fact that all of our instructors started as students at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga. I am excited to be able to offer this opportunity to our hot yoga community -- both to continually improve the quality of our instructors, and provide opportunities for you to deepen your personal practice. Please note some class cancellations below, that are happening due to the rigorous Teacher Training schedule. I do appreciate your patience with these class cancellations, and look forward to adding them back to the schedule on August 10th. Thanks for your continued support of Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, as well as this month's Teacher Training program. Namaste, Jason

Student of the Month |
Our July Student of the Month is Joel Rudnick!
- When did you start practicing hot yoga?
"A mutual friend of mine and Jason's in San Francisco, told me Jason was getting ready to open the studio, and referred me there," Joel said. "I had done yoga for a few months many years prior. I was thinking about starting up again." Joel started practicing at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in July 2003. He immediately felt like it was a good workout and made a commitment to keep going. Now he's taken 490 classes! (as of 4/7)
- How often do you practice?
Joel practices hot yoga 2-3 times per week.
- Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"The mental aspect," Joel began. "Hot yoga helps me relax. I try to come to the 4:30 class twice a week, after work, and I'm really affected when I miss those classes. My job can be really hectic, and taking those classes really calms me down and changes my attitude" in a good way. Then, there's the physical side of the practice. Joel explained that he "feels really good after class" and his body has changed, in that he's more limber and his lower back problems are gone.
- How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"Hot yoga teaches me to breathe -- to be more aware of my breath, breathing deeply, through my nose, using my lungs," said Joel. He went on to say that "the mental side" of the practice, which helps him to relax and stay calm, keeps him coming back. "I just keep trying to improve, keep trying to improve..."
- What's your favorite posture?
Joel likes Rabbit best. He feels like he's good at it, and it has really helped alleviate the lower back pain he had when he first discovered hot yoga. |
