Instructor Anniversaries this month:
It's Jordan M.'s 2nd year teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga!
Hometown:
Costa Mesa, CA

Why do you love hot yoga?
"Hot yoga provides me consistency and balance. It keeps me grounded. It's something good to keep coming back to, amidst everything else in my life."

What's something you're working on in your practice?
"Mindfulness. I try to be mindful in everything I do, but I really work at bringing awareness to my hot yoga practice. I try not to judge myself, and just accept."

What is something unique about you, that is unrelated to your hot yoga practice?
"I try to practice meditation every morning and every night, for 30-45 minutes at a time. I've been doing this for a few years."

We would like to thank all of the students who have come through our doors, brought friends and family after them, and have ultimately, made this Studio into such a strong community. Thank you for supporting Huntington Beach Hot Yoga as a business. But more importantly, thank you for enabling us to guide you, instruct you, and help you to grow in your hot yoga practice.

Have you considered doing Teacher Training?

ttbuttonADMany students have been inquiring about the Dayton Method Teacher Training Program beginning July 9th. The most common question students ask is if their yoga practice is advanced enough to be eligible for teacher training. I find that question as irrelevant as any beginning yoga enthusiast thinking that if they are not flexible, then they can't do yoga. Yoga is not for the flexible! It's for the inflexible, and for many other therapeutic reasons. My first instructor asked me to do Bikram Yoga Teacher Training after only 6 months of practice. I entered training with only 9 months of yoga practice, and without any expectations to ever teach. Looking back, I believe it was a blessing, because I was thirsty for knowledge and did not believe that I already knew it all about yoga.

If you have a strong passion for practicing yoga, you are eligible to participate in teacher training. In fact, it is my humble opinion that the students that have the greatest challenges in their own yoga practice become great instructors because they can understand the growing pains beginners go through. I welcome anyone who loves to practice yoga, and has a desire to make a positive change, not only in your own life, but in other peoples' as well.

Jason Wilkerson
Student of the Month

Don Katz

Our May Student of the Month is Don Katz!
  • When did you start practicing hot yoga?
Don's brother Joshua first found Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, and recommended it to his brother. Two-and-a-half years ago, Don started out by doing private sessions with Laura S. In the beginning, they practiced for just an hour in 100 degrees, and grew from there. Don continued the private sessions for about a year and a half before starting to take classes this past January.
  • How often do you practice?
Don practices once per week, and is trying to grow to twice per week.
  • Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
In 2001, Don contracted menangitis, which put him in a coma for three-and-a-half weeks. When he came out of the coma, he had lost his sight... So Don started his response to this question by saying that he does hot yoga "because it keeps [him] walking." Before losing his sight, he already had a problem with his balance. So now, it's even more of a challenge. "Hot yoga helps me to be more flexible. It gives me better balance and strength, which all helps me walk," said Don. "Hot yoga is cleansing, and just gives me this incredible feeling afterwards. It makes me feel at peace. Plus, I'm vain, and hot yoga really helps me stay in shape," he said with a laugh.

  • How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"I've done lots of yoga before, but hot yoga really kicks your a#&," Don commented. "It's more intense, more purifying. It definitely betters my life, especially in keeping me walking. It gives me 90 minutes to focus on my body, and leaves me more at peace when I'm done."

  • What's your favorite posture?
"Fixed firm is pretty easy for me, and I like it a lot," said Don. "I also really like Awkward. But Savasana has got to be my favorite."
