Instructor Anniversaries this month: It's Laura S.'s 3rd year teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga! |
Why do you love hot yoga? I love hot yoga because it teaches me patience and acceptance. I practice about 5 days per week, and have learned to let go of expectations, because everyday is so different! Most important is that it is a PRACTICE, and all I can do is keep trying.
What's something you're working on in your practice? I am working on pushing myself a little harder in standing-head-to-knee.
What is something unique about you, that is unrelated to your hot yoga practice? I am a mother of 2 amazing kids! My son Evan is 10, and my daughter Olivia is 9. Yoga is so beneficial for my children -- which is part of why I became a certified children's instructor, and teach the children's program at our studio in the summer!
It's Erica's 1st anniversary of teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga!
Hometown: Upland, California
Why do you love hot yoga? I am obsessed with hot yoga because I love to sweat, and it gives me incredible energy.
What's something you're working on in your practice? I am working hard on standing bow pulling. I want my legs to be in a standing split. It is such a beautiful and challenging pose.
What's something unique about you, that is unrelated to your hot yoga practice? I enjoy being in the kitchen baking sweet treats, and then giving them to all my wonderful friends and family! |

Greetings yogis and yoginis,
As usual in life, there is always an ongoing state of change taking place, and Huntington Beach Hot Yoga has gone through many in its almost 6 years of business. I am constantly trying to improve the studio to make the operational aspects of it more enjoyable for the students. The new heating system has taken longer than expected, but will be working in April. Thank you for being patient with us during the installation process, as I know it's been loud at times in the yoga room. The new unit will be of the highest standards and will operate with a UV filtration system, which is used in hospitals to kill germs and bacteria. I am very excited about the improved air quality in the yoga room.
As for the staff, we have 3 teachers leaving Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in April: Lindsey, Nadia and Tracey. Lindsey not only teaches, but also manages the studio, and has been a major contributor to the administrative side of the business. She has grown tremendously into the position, and I am very proud of her. Nadia is a teacher, and is the editor for SWEAT (this monthly newsletter). She, along with Lindsey, led the first 30-day Challenge earlier this year, and Nadia has continued to practice. She has now completed almost 90 straight days of hot yoga! Tracey teaches the 6am classes, and has been very consistent and reliable for those early morning classes. The early morning class is often a challenge to find teachers for, and Tracey has always been willing to help out where needed. All 3 ladies will be missed and I am very grateful not only to have had them teach at our studio, but to also know them as friends. I wish them well with their new adventures in life.
Namaste,

Student of the Month |
Our April Student of the Month is Man Tran!
- When did you start practicing hot yoga?
In the fall of 2006, Man was living and studying in Cape Town, South Africa. A friend there, dragged her to a Bikram studio, and got her to buy a 5-class card. Man hated the heat, but when she returned home, she found herself looking for a hot yoga studio locally... She took her first class at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga in February 2007, and has been practicing regularly ever since. She has already completed nearly 530 classes!
- How often do you practice?
Man likes to practice 4-5 days per week.
- Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"I like being flexible. Hot yoga increases my strength by a lot. I love how de-stressed I feel after every class. During class, I don't think about any problems in life, and then after class, those problems always feel smaller and less serious than before. I just always feel so great after class," Man explained. She went on to say, "I should probably mention that hot yoga was my only training for climbing Mt. Kilamanjaro in October 2008. I practiced 5 days per week, and it helped improve my breathing and expand my lung capacity. It helped me prepare mentally not to freak out when climbing the final 8 hours to the summit -- when your water starts to freeze, and you can't get much oxygen. When I did that part of the climb, I imagined the hardest part of hot yoga class, when I first start to become short of breath in Triangle pose," said Man.
- How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"I started exercising because of this!" said Man. Before hot yoga, she had never done any exercise other than walking. "Hot yoga showed me that ordinary people can stay fit without having to go to the gym," which Man finds a bit intimidating, with all the different weight machines that she doesn't know how to use. "I like that I can do it at my pace. Others in class are enjoying themselves and don't intimidate me," she said.
- What's your favorite posture?
Man's favorite postures are Wind Removing and Back Release. "They make my back feel great. I even like to do them after class," she said. |
