Instructor Anniversaries this month: It's Nadia's 3rd year teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga! |
Hometown: Wilton, Connecticut
Why do you love hot yoga? I love hot yoga, because it stills my busy mind. It detoxifies my body. It makes me stronger, and more flexible. It teaches me to control my mind in order to build endurance, and constantly grow what I'm capable of doing. It's simultaneously challenging, gratifying, and humbling. My hot yoga practice helps me to be the person I aspire to be, outside of hot yoga class.
What's something you're working on in your practice? My stillness! Somewhere in the midst of several personal challenges recently, my mind is wandering. I've gotten more antsy in between postures and during savasanas. I'm really trying to bring focus to that aspect of my practice right now. I know I can improve.
What is something unique about you, that is unrelated to your hot yoga practice? I've run 7 marathons in the last 10 years, each in different U.S. states.
It's Lourdes' 4th year teaching at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga!
Hometown: Cypress, California
Why do you love hot yoga? I love how good I feel after class. Hot yoga cleanses my body, and relaxes me when I'm stressed. I also think it's a great cardio workout, because my heart rate is varying up and down throughout the 90- minute class.
What's something you're working on in your practice? Toe stand! I've been practicing hot yoga for years, but I still can't get down to the floor and bring my hands into prayer.
What's something unique about you, that is unrelated to your hot yoga practice? I love endurance sports. I've run a marathon, rode many Centuries, and done triathlons. I love the mental and physical challenge. |

All of us at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga hope you enjoyed the holidays to the fullest.
This is a great time of year to create some new goals (or resolutions!) to work toward in 2009. When you consider New Years Resolutions related to your family, career, and relationships, also think about your hot yoga practice! In 2009, commit to practicing hot yoga one extra day each week, or really trying to improve on the posture that challenges you most, or trying to stay *completely* still in savasanas! Whatever goal may be most appropriate for you, set it, and work on it throughout the year. Bringing such intentions to hot yoga class, you will undoubtedly improve your practice.
If you haven't yet registered to participate in the 30-Day Challenge, please do so by January 5th. If you're nervous to try it, consider making the Challenge one of your New Year's Resolutions! You can do it. Dedicate the 30 days of the Challenge to your personal health and well-being, by eating well, getting plenty of sleep, staying well-hydrated, and taking *daily* hot yoga classes. What better goal to work toward!

Student of the Month |
Our January Student of the Month is Lisa Nadler!
- When did you start practicing hot yoga?
Lisa is a former spinning addict. She would do early morning spin classes 4 days per week, spending far too much money at an expensive gym. Over time, it contributed to low back and sciatica nerve pains. She started looking for an alternative exercise. When she found Huntington Beach Hot Yoga, she didn't know much about it and was a little nervous about the heat. But after one class in July 2005, she was hooked. She cancelled her gym membership and decided to never go back to spin again. She's since done over 670 classes at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga!
- How often do you practice?
Lisa practiced hot yoga 5 days per week, until starting a new job a few months ago. She's currently only able to practice 3 days per week, but is anxious to get back to 5. She enjoys, and feels a big difference when she's able to practice more!
- Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
Initially, Lisa practiced to alleviate her back pain. It quickly made her back stronger. She enjoys taking the 6am class before work, as it makes her back feel great all day, even while sitting in a chair at a desk for so many hours. Earlier this year, Lisa had to miss 3 weeks of yoga. Upon coming back to class, she realized for the first time, the tremendous cardio benefits she gains from hot yoga. She also finds hot yoga tremendously detoxifying: "I have clearer skin. I feel purified. It even helps keep my weight in check; my weight doesn't fluctuate as much as it used to." Lastly, "hot yoga forces me to be more hydrated, which really helps keep my energy levels up -- in and out of class."
- How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"The biggest thing hot yoga helps with is stress. My family has had so many unexpected challenges this year, and I'm not sure how I could've gotten through it without hot yoga," Lisa said. She continued, "yoga really helps me from getting anxious, it helps me not be impatient. It's made me a much calmer person."
- What's your favorite posture?
"Rabbit and camel," Lisa responded. "Rabbit really helps with my lower back. I immediately feel a great stretch through my tight lower back, which feels so good. I think with Camel, it just feels good to open my chest like that, when I'm usually hunched over a computer all day. I feel such a great release in Camel," said Lisa. |
