Choose a fiber-filled diet!*

Fiber lowers our risk of diabetes, heart disease, diverticulitis, and constipation. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body can't digest. Most adult women should shoot for over 20 grams of fiber a day; men should shoot for over 30 grams. Great sources are whole fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and breakfast cereals, and all manner of beans. Learn more on fiber here.

  1. Go with whole fruit instead of juice. Whole apples and whole oranges are packed with a lot more fiber and a lot fewer calories than their liquid counterparts.
  2. Break the fast with fruit. Get off to a great start by adding fruit, like berries or melon, to your breakfast every day.
  3. Check the label for fiber-filled whole grains. Choose foods that list whole grains (like whole wheat or whole oats) as a first ingredient.
  4. Eat more beans.
  5. Try a new dish. Test out international recipes that use whole grains, like tabouli or whole wheat pasta, or beans, like Indian dahls.

NOVEMBER 2008

With the holidays approaching, and so much negative change in our economy, these can be difficult times. It's natural to feel more anxious, and financially stressed. Remember that it is in these most challenging times that we need to truly prioritize our hot yoga practice. Class is when you take time for yourself, clear your head, focus your mind, detoxify and strengthen your body as well as your immune system. Your hot yoga practice is more important than ever! Continue to prioritize hot yoga and its plethora of benefits in your schedule, and your life.

This time of year reminds us to be especially grateful for all that is positive in our lives at this moment, including our loved ones and of course, our hot yoga practice. Be on the lookout in the next couple weeks, for a class schedule change announcement for Thanksgiving weekend. Happy Thanksgiving!

Student of the Month

SarahSitar

Our November Student of the Month is Sarah Sitar!
  • When did you start practicing hot yoga?
"Huntington Beach Hot Yoga was right near the gym where I was working out. I was looking for a different exercise. I thought yoga would be more calming than the gym, and elongate my muscles instead of bulk them up," said Sarah. So she tried a class in July 2004, and really liked it, because she found it challenging, physically and mentally. She also appreciated that it was repetitive: "Class doesn't change every time like with aerobics. Once you know the series, you can just work on perfecting it." Sarah has now taken  more than 320 classes!
  • How often do you practice?
Sarah usually practices hot yoga 2 days per week.
  • Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"I love the calming and meditative element of hot yoga, the stretching and strengthening. Life usually drives me in so many directions, but hot yoga constantly allows me to work on improving my focus," said Sarah.
  • How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
"Hot yoga has taught me that I can control my mind, because focusing for that long is really hard for me," admitted Sarah. She continued, "I'm happy with how it's changed my body. It keeps me lean -- so I gave up weight training, which used to bulk me up."
  • What's your favorite posture?
Triangle is Sarah's favorite posture these days. "It builds strength. And I've seen real improvement in my ability to do it."
