Eagle
Garudasana
Eagle
The Sanskrit word garuda means eagle. In Hindu mythology, Garuda is known as the king of birds. He transports the God Vishnu and is said to be eager to help humanity fight against demons.

In our yoga practice, Eagle pose warms up all 12 major joints in the body -- ankles, knees, hips, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. Firms calves, thighs, hips, abdomen, and upper arms. Strengthens the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, and deltoid muscles. Helps relieve asthma, leg cramps, neck, back, and sciatic nerve pain. Brings fresh blood to the reproductive organs and kidneys. Improves sexual vitality, concentration, and balance. Improves the function of the central nervous system and lymphatic system.

Student of the Month
           Yvonne Fowler
Our January Student of the Month is Yvonne Fowler
!
  • When did you start practicing hot yoga?
Yvonne started her hot yoga practice at HB Hot Yoga over 3 years ago, and has done over 420 classes to date! Prior to trying hot yoga, she practiced Hatha and Iyengar yoga for 20 years. But once she tried hot yoga, there was no going back!

  • How often do you practice?
Yvonne practices 3-5 times per week.
  • Why do you practice? What are the primary benefits you experience?
"I think it really keeps me young," Yvonne says. She appreciates the inversions, how postures improve blood flow and her aging skin. Hot yoga has really helped with the arthritis in her feet, knees and hands. Her chiropractor even comments that her body moves, and responds to adjustments better since she's been doing hot yoga.
  • How has your hot yoga practice impacted or changed your life?
For Yvonne, how hot yoga has affected her life is quite simple. It helps her feel young and good. Though she's exercised regularly since her 20's, hot yoga has proven to be the most beneficial, pain free, non-impact exercise she's tried. It has improved her concentration, and provides her a 90-minute respite from her day, and stress, which is so balancing.
Frequently Asked Questions

I'm still working on my New Year's resolutions. What are some Resolutions I could make to improve my hot yoga practice in 2008?

First of all, New Year's resolutions are a great opportunity to formally re-new your commitment to your personal health, through your hot yoga practice! There are many ways to go about doing this -- some more challenging than others. Here are several ideas for how you could improve your hot yoga practice in 2008:

  • Practice hot yoga at least 3 times per week, and on consecutive days whenever possible
  • Stay for a full 5 minutes in final savasana at the end of class
  • Drink more water, eat more healthy, or get more sleep than usual on days you come to class
  • Choose a handful of postures that challenge you most, and commit to beginning these postures with a positive mind-set
  • Bring extra attention to every savasana throughout class! By really working on total stillness -- mind and body -- during each savasana, you will increase your energy levels, and gain more benefits throughout class
  • Next time you arrive for class, ask a teacher to help you identify postures you can improve. Give those postures more attention
Make 2008 the year you truly give yourself the gift of yoga, and reap the benefits of your practice in a deeper way than ever before!
