Lawn Dawg
September 2011
Lawn, leaves and more!
Greetings!

Jim headshotA message from the President:

We will look back on 2011 as one of the most challenging years we have faced. Severe heat coupled with timely rain showers resulted in the worst weed pressure that we've ever seen. During years like this our Customer Service Initiative (CSI) becomes even more important. I hope we did a good job communicating with you and explaining why the weeds are present, what we are doing to get rid of them, and the fact that we recognize the problem and are doing everything we can to provide the best results possible. Customer service is the most important part of our job. Please read our CSI and let me know if we have fulfilled our obligation by completing our online Report Card.

As we wrap up this year, our team is busy preparing for 2012. With the help of Ron Connor, our NH branch manager, we will be looking at all of our trucks and equipment and deciding what to keep, what to replace and what we should use for next year. With the help of Bob Mann, our Plymouth branch manager, we will take a thorough look at our product program and make sure we are using the best and safest products available. Bob will also be developing and improving our training programs for all employees.

Speaking of branch openings, we will be re-opening our New Hampshire seacoast office and plan to locate it in the greater Portsmouth area. Customers from northeastern Massachusetts, southern Maine and eastern New Hampshire will be transferred to this office to better service them.

The reorganization and relocation of our headquarters continues to proceed well. Deborah, our controller, has finished her move to Nashua and is settling in quite nicely. I am happy to announce the addition of Val Bibens to our HQ staff. Val will fill the new role of staff accountant which will include all HR and payroll functions as well as general accounting. Val has been employed by Lawn Dawg since 2005 and has recently served as office manager in Boston North. Val will begin at HQ on Monday, October 3rd. Please join me in congratulating Val on this well deserved promotion.

Our commitment to improving our Tree & Shrub division continues as we have partnered with students at Bentley University to do a complete analysis and business plan to help us with our program and offerings for the future. We have a great team of Tree & Shrub specialists and we are committed to giving them better tools to improve that segment of our business.

Lawn Dawg is a growing company at a very exciting time in our history. I would be foolish not to recognize that our success is driven by our outstanding employees who are dedicated to customer service. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in joining our team please let us know by filling out the online Employment form.

As we wind down and complete our 15th year in business, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of you who trust us with your lawn and landscape. It is a responsibility that we do not take lightly, and we will always try our hardest to exceed your expectations. You will receive your renewal paperwork for 2012 in early November. I hope that we have earned your confidence and continued patronage for next year and years to come.

Last call for Aeration & Overseeding!
For anyone who has not ordered aeration and overseeding yet this is your last chance! Timing is critical and we are nearing the end of the opportunity to schedule this service.

Core aeration should be done annually to maximize the potential of your

lawn. The benefits of aeration include the following:

    • Increases the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch
    • Improves fertilizer uptake and use (within 7-10 days)
    • Enhances water uptake and use by soil (immediately)
    • Reduces soil compaction (immediately)
    • Increases oxygen movement between the soil and atmosphere (immediately)
    • Enhances infiltration of rainfall or irrigation
    • Helps prevent fertilizer and pesticide run-off from overly compacted areas

Overseeding will introduce new and improved grass types while helping toll in bare and thin areas. The result...a thick, green, healthy lawn!

If you would like to schedule your lawn for aeration, or aeration with overseeding, please call 888-993-3294 today.

For proper seed germination, aeration with overseeding takes priority and will be performed as soon as weather permits.

Fall Maintenance Tips
mowerMowing
During the fall the growth of your lawn will begin to slow. You should gradually reduce your mowing height 1 setting per week. Your final cut should be no lower than 1 ½ inches, leaving a higher grass blade.

Lawn SprinklerWatering
The fall provides more rain and cooler temperatures. However keep in mind, lawns need water regularly regardless of the temperature. Cool temperatures do allow the lawn to look great while using less water, but be sure your lawn is getting 1" of water per week. Usually natural rainfall during the fall is sufficient.

Leaves
Be sure to rake up all leaves and debris off the lawn this fall and do not mulch them into the lawn. Leaving fallen leaves covering the lawn can create a matted down, disease ridden area. Leaves are full of tannic acid which is not good for your lawn.

pH
A balanced pH is essential for your lawn to look its very best. A low pH means the soil is acidic (soils in the northeast are naturally acidic). Acidic soil interferes with the lawn's ability to take in and use the nutrients we apply. Acidic soil also promotes weed growth and thatch build up. Have your lawn pH tested by your Lawn Dawg specialist. A corrective application of limestone can still be applied this time of year.

Fall Fertilizer Treatments
The fall fertilizer treatment is probably the most important application of the year. Fall is the best growing time of the year for cool season grasses. A heavy fall fertilizer will maximize the growing benefits by providing vibrant color and an overall thickening of your lawn. Now is a great time to aerate and overseed.

Winterizer
Our Winterizer application is a slow-release organic blend which becomes stored in the roots to promote an early spring green-up. This treatment is specially-formulated to help protect your lawn against winter kill and snow mold disease. To read more about the benefits of a Winterizer application check out our blog article
"What does Winterizer do for my lawn?" (link opens in new window).
