Dear Friends of Dorcas House,

Summer is here, and with it some new looks for an old newsletter.  Why?  Just to keep things a little more interesting.

Nothing has changed with our wonderful children and their home, though.  They still need all the love and support we can give them.
Sylvia Says:

Buenas Tardes a Todos!

The children are fine. We have 3 new kids, Leonel 10 months old, Karely 4 years old, Frida 3 years old. The first 2 children need a lot of help. Their father is in prison and mother has to work. Karely needs special attention as she is undernourished and small. We are going to take her to CRI, the center for special children, and find out what the doctors can do for her. Leonel her brother is healthy, and Frida is healthy too.

On Friday, 3 of our kids that been here since kindergarten are graduating from middle school on to High School Alexis, Vicente and Yvette.

Also graduating from kindergarten 4 kids, Monse, Carla, Evelyn & Julio. They are already enrolled in Elementary.

Another group of 12 kids are going to take swimming lessons starting in July. The first group did very well.

Vacation Swimming Lessons - A Big Hit!

We will talk to the children and see what they want to do in summer. Activities can include going to the parks, beaches, for hikes, etc.

We have petitioned the DIF (Social Services) authorities for a permit so some of the children can cross the border for the great art exhibit on 24 of September at St. Paul's Cathedral in San Diego. It may seem early, but it takes to long to get an answer.

Our project last year was for individual and group therapy. It was so successful that we would like to continue with the same project.

What's Happening at Dorcas House and Here At Home?

June Visit to Dorcas House

9 visitors total.  We had a low-key visit with the children.  Some folks colored, others played with the kids and sang songs.  We did not meet 2 of the 3 new children however we did meet Frieda.  $55 extra was turned into the Cathedral.  Interestingly, during the last month, the waiting time to cross back into the US has been amazingly short - about 20 minutes...no news as to why this is.

Come join us next month and make some happy memories - for you AND the kids.

Artists At Work

Upcoming, on September 24th, St. Paul's Cathedral will host a gala Art Exhibit, "A Life Expressed Through The Eyes of a Child".  The kids are busy creating exhibition pieces, including these beautiful votive candles.

Hola Amigos, The Next Dorcas House Visit!

Please join us on the next visit to Dorcas House in Tijuana on  Saturday, July 9th.  The children love return visitors and newcomers alike and always look forward to our visits.  We'll meet in the St. Paul's Cathedral parking lot ( 2728 Sixth Ave ) at 11:30 AM and return to San Diego by 6:00PM.  We carpool down to the border parking lot, cross the border on foot  and grab some lunch at our favorite outdoor restaurant.  After that, we take a group taxi to the foster home where we visit and play with the children.  It will be a fun day you will never forget.  Please plan to bring about $20 per person (or $40 per family) to cover the cost of transportation and insurance (no one is turned away for lack of funds).  Expect to spend another $5 to $10 per person on lunch and incidentals.  A valid passport is required.  Please contact Suzanne Warren, by Thursday May 12th by email at Suzanne Warren (my preference) or at home 619-437-8700 to let me know if you plan to attend.  If you are unfamiliar with the Dorcas House ministry, please visit Dorcas House Friends for more information.
