Alabama immigration law blocked until Sept. 29 while federal judge weighs case

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn has decided to block Alabama's new immigration law for a month to give herself more time to rule on whether parts or all of the far-reaching law are constitutional.

The U.S. Department of Justice, an array of civil rights groups and the leaders of Alabama's Catholic, Episcopal and United Methodist churches have all sued to block the law, which offers a host of criminal and civil penalties for illegal immigrants and those who harbor, transport, rent to, employ and enter contracts with them. At a hearing last week in Birmingham, the plaintiffs argued that Blackburn should issue an injunction blocking its implementation.

Episco-Mall ready to go!

Submitted by Mark Roberts, Epiphany Development

The Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast is asking for at least three churches, ideally five, within the Diocese to participate and beta test   the Episcomall.com web site. The site is a place for parishioners to sell items (as in a garage sale or art/collections sale) online with proceeds going to their parish and a percentage to the diocese. A small group of 3-5 volunteers can manage your Parish web site and sell items to raise money. Only one person with some computer experience is required.

Who and what is required?

Parish Episcomall Administrators

These volunteers will update product inventory and pictures, oversee sales and shipping and work directly with the Diocese to complete administrative reports.

Parish Photographers

Take digital photographs of items for sale.

Donors

Donate items to their Parish by bringing the items to church for processing or process their donations online.

Buyers

Purchase donated items at a reasonable price. Episcomall is more like amazon.com than ebay.

The Diocese will mail out checks to each Parish once a month. The Diocese keeps 20% of revenues. The Parishes can see their sales reports online. Episco-Mall is an additional and new method to have a fund-raiser.... it is an ongoing operation that uses little sweat equity when compared to the traditional annual garage sales/thrift shop sales/yard-sales.

The first three Parishes will be accepted although ideally we'd love to have five parishes participate.  If your Parish would like to participate, email admin@episcomall.com with your request.  Thank you!

Thoughts, Comments

Remembering Pamela Chinnis

By the Rev. Albert Kennington, Priest Associate
St. Paul's, Daphne

The announcement by Episcopal News Service of the death of Dr. Pamela Chinnis on August 24 brought a flood of good memories for many Episcopalians throughout the land and beyond.  But when a friend said to me, "I didn't know who she was," I took to my keyboard.

Pam Chinnis will be recorded by church historians as the first female President of the House of Deputies of General Convention.  She was elected by acclamation in 1991 and served through the General Convention of 2000.

I was honored to serve as a deputy from the Central Gulf Coast throughout her term, and I want to share some of my memories of her.  Full article here

Stewardship: A Response to Love

Submitted by The Rev. Martha Kreamer, Vicar

Advent, Lillian

Found, in a book which belonged to The Ven. Samuel H. Hardman:

From a 1986 Service leaflet from Immanuel, Bay Minette.

I believe

That Humankind is created by God;

That all life is a gift from God;

That my life is a trust from God;

That time, talent, and treasure are gifts from God;

That I am to be a responsible manager of these gifts from God;

That through my giving I am living for God;

That through my giving and living I may be a builder of the kingdom of God;

That through my giving and living I may help our community the know the peace of ths:

That my giving and living be governed by a tithe to God.
