CHRISTIAN-JEWISH DIALOGUE FOUNDER PAUL FILBEN DIES By the Rev. Albert Kennington MOBILE, AL - Paul Filben, co-founder of Mobile Christian-Jewish Dialogue, died May 28, 2011, in his home in Mobile. He was 81. In 1974, Paul and his wife Mary, who died last year, began the work for which they are best known and will long be remembered in Mobile and beyond. Today, 37 years later, the Mobile Christian-Jewish Dialogue is recognized as the oldest, continuous lay-led Christian-Jewish Dialogue in the United States. Begun in Mobile for Roman Catholics and Jews, it was soon opened to all Christians. Bishop George Murray quickly joined the effort; Bishop Duvall and Bishop Duncan have continued support by the Episcopal diocese and encouraged participation by Episcopalians. "John Briscione was real God-send to us," remarked Father Ray Waldon. Fr. Waldon is still resident in the Gulf Coast , but licensed to St. Peters in Talladega, Alabama. Fr. Waldon stated that John Briscione of Holy Cross who currently manages the trailer put new tires on the unit and made it immediately available after conferring with Bishop Duncan. Brotherhood Chapters from Holy Cross, Christ Church, Holy Trinity, St. James Fairhope and St. Paul's, Daphne will provide reports to the Assembly on their activities in the prior year and plans for 2011. In addition there are potentially several new Chapters in the works. The Celebrant will be the Rt. Rev. Philip M. Duncan. We invite all men to attend the meeting and hope that some parishes may consider establishing a Brotherhood of Saint Andrew Chapter in 2011. ST. We want to have some food, fun and music with all our neighbors, and let the community get to know us better." ANDREWS, PANAMA CITY, PLANS JUNE EVENTS Submitted by Laurie Ayers, Coastline Communicator St. Andrew's, Panama City PANAMA CITY, FL Taizé Service On June 12, at 5:30 p.m., St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will celebrate Pentecost and the close of the Easter season with a Taizé service. A Taizé service consists of repetitive, easy to sing songs that call one to silence and meditation. It is a visually gorgeous service that fosters a spirit of kindness, simplicity and reconciliation. On June 29 at 5:00 p.m. parishioners from St. Andrew's, Panama City, plan to kayak or canoe from Lake Caroline Park on West Beach Drive to the Buccaneer Restaurant. An Evening Prayer Service will follow on the shore of the beautiful beach behind the Buccaneer. The evening will conclude with a Dutch-treat dinner. Anyone in the community with a kayak or canoe is invited to participate. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Some VBS sessions have begun already but others are planned for later in June and July.
