2011 DIOCESAN MEDICAL MISSION TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Our medical mission is in transition as we change our assigned area in the Dominican Republic to the Episcopal Church of San Marcos in Haina, District of Paravia, some 20 miles west of the capitol city of Santo Domingo. Our diocesan construction team built pews for this newly constructed church over a couple of years starting in 2005. This D.R. community has a need for medical care owing to the level of surrounding poverty.
Current plans call for a small team of 10 to 12 people to conduct medical clinics in and around Haina from March 5th through March 13th, 2011. Applications are being sought from MDs, PAs, RNPs, RNs/LPNs, Pharmacist, Pharm. Tech., Spanish Translators, and Clergy. If you are interested, please submit your application ASAP. The address for mailing your application and other necessary documents is on the application. Download the application here.
If you have questions about the mission or difficulty downloading the application, contact Keith Greene, Team Leader, at:

St. John's, Monroeville,
By The Rev. Sandra Meaher, Rector St. John's, Monroeville
Editor's Note:
St. John's, Monroeville, has been very involved in its prison ministry outreach program. Beginning in early summer a group of parishioners from St. Johns have been conducting services at L.I.F.E Tech campus, a program of the Alabama Pardon and Parole board located in Thomasville, Alabama. The following article is a follow up to last week's "Mass in the Grass" story.
MONROEVILLE, AL - St. John's, Monroeville
On Sunday, November 28th, a thanksgiving meal, complete with ham, turkey and all the trimmings was shared with the residents...all 200 of them! There was enough food for each resident to have second helpings...and the only food left over was one-half pan of dressing and some cranberry sauce. Members of St. John's along with some special friends served the residents in the dining hall that had been decorated with lovely Thanksgiving centerpieces. A wonderful time was had by all who participated, especially those of us who worked serving the residents. It was a testimony to the willing hearts and hands of those who understand the meaning of Jesus' role as servant, and want to follow in those footsteps.

Green Tips
Green Tips for Trying to Save on Gas...continued from last week's issue of The Coastline
Proper engine tuning Like a piano, a car's engine becomes out of tune over a period of time and this seriously impacts on fuel economy. Tuning is a separate process to basic servicing and usually consists of adjustment to idling speed, fuel/air mixture, carburetor balance or injector maintenance, spark plug and distributor gap setting and ignition timing. While having your car tuned can cost a little, you can recoup those costs and then some by having an more efficient running engine.
Air filters A clean air filter can save you up to 15% in gas usage. Old or worn filters allow dirt into the engine which not only impacts on the amount of fuel you use, but can also cause other engine faults that are expensive to repair.
Keep Tires Properly Inflated Poorly inflated tires cause drag that negatively impacts on fuel economy, safety and also wear on the tire itself. I've seen all sorts of varying figures as to how much you can save through proper inflation, but the point is that tires should be inflated to at *least* the manufacturers specifications. Often, over-inflating tires can provide even better economy, but check with your mechanic or tire dealer before doing so as this can present some safety and tire wear issues if too much air is added.
Quality motor oil Oil in an engine is all about reducing friction - less friction also means less gas being used. Using the wrong grade of motor oil in your engine can cause overheating and wear problems, plus knock a couple of percent off your fuel economy.
