Hello!
| |
Today I kept changing images in the header space above while compiling this issue of the Coastline. I loaded, and then unloaded several traditional Thanksgiving photos...any one of them would have been very appropriate for this week but I never really settled on one. Shortly after lunch, I received the photo above from Bishop Duncan's office and immediately knew this one trumped all of the traditional Thanksgiving photos I had tested throughout the day. These stoic faces remind us that we have sisters and brothers who will not be home tomorrow at their Thanksgiving tables, nor will they be home at Christmas. Some will never come home. Please remember them all in your Prayers of Thanksgiving. Click here to read the letter that accompanied this photograph. A preface from Bishop Duncan is included.
This Coastline issue has more than the normal number of photographs and links to slide shows of events and stories from around our Diocese! Be sure to stop at the "Come and Behold Him" news article below and click the link to photos of several Nativity Scenes from last year's event. Over 100 Nativity Scenes were on display last year and the goal is to have at least the same number this year. YOU are invited to enter your Nativity Scene!
NOTE: Paperwork is involved. So be sure to check it out. Thank you to the numerous Coastline Communicators who tirelessly send news and photos to fill the Coastline every week. I am constructing a list to publish on the diocesan website so everyone can see who contributes to this e-publication. Does your church have a Coastline Communicator? If not, would you like to be the one to send news reports and photos for this e-newsletter? If so, please talk to your priest or Sr. Warden, and then email me for what is expected. It is fun to show off what your parish is doing.... You do NOT have to be a great photographer or writer. My job as editor is to enhance your photos and your articles, if needed. Think about being a Coastline Communicator. Just be sure to talk with your priest or Sr. Warden so efforts will be coordinated and not duplicated.
Thanks for reading. Happy Thanksgiving!
Peace. Cindy McCrory, Editor The Coastline coastline@diocgc.org

The Lessons Appointed for Use on The First Sunday of Advent
November 28, 2010
THE COLLECT
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Green Tips for Fall Submitted by Lella Lowe, Coastline Communicator
1. Check the air pressure in your tires. Cooler temperatures lower tire pressure and that, in turn, lowers fuel efficiency. So check your tires and make sure that they are properly inflated.
2. Clean and test the furnace. Did you know that your furnace needs cleaning? Yep ... it collects all kinds of dust and debris which not only affects it's performance but could cause a fire. Before you really need the heat, get out your owner's manual for instructions on how to clean it.
3. Move furniture or any obstructions from vents, baseboard heaters, registers on the floor or radiators so that air moves freely. This is also a good time to vacuum these areas to remove any dust or debris. And here's a tip if you have a radiator ... place a reflecting panel behind it ... you can purchase one at a home center or make one yourself with a plywood panel and aluminum foil.
4. Remove window air conditioners for the winter. If they can't be removed, seal them with caulking or tape and cover them with an airtight, insulated jacket.
5. Vacuum the refrigerator coils to keep the compressor running efficiently. It's also a good time to check that the refrigerator is level ... the door should automatically swing shut instead of staying open. Check the seal on the door ... try closing it on a dollar bill. If you can pull the bill out easily, it's time to replace the gaskets. Here's another tip for running the refrigerator efficiently ... don't over fill it. Allowing room for cool air to circulate will keep everything at the right temperature.

Episcopal Relief and Development
| Matching Gift Challenge to Raise $1 Million for Global Needs
Through November 30, any donation made to Episcopal Relief & Development will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000. This means a total of up to $1 million for relief and development programs in the places that need them most.
The Matching Gift Challenge is a chance for donors to give with the knowledge that their contribution will have double the impact. "If you give $50, you'll generate $100 in assistance to help people in need," said Judy Sawler, the organization's Manager of Direct Response Marketing, who is heading up the appeal. "Donate $500 and people all over the world will benefit from $1,000 in food, medicine, clean water, opportunities to start businesses and much more."
Any size gift to any of Episcopal Relief & Development's funds - online, by mail or by phone - will be matched in full until November 30, or as long as matching funds are available. The matched gift amount will be donated to the Global Needs fund, which sustains the organization's work toward alleviating hunger, promoting health, creating economic opportunities and overcoming disaster.
