Baking for Beckwith with Sister Schubert

HodgeHollySister
Beckwith Board Chairman, Hodge Alves and his daughter-in-law, Holly Alves, get a cookbook signed by Sister Schubert

DAPHNE, Al - Baking for Beckwith event with Sister Schubert (Barnes) was a hit last Friday, November 12, 2010 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Daphne, Alabama. Almost 200 cookbooks were sold to luncheon attendees! Sister Schubert autographed each book that was purchased. 75% of the proceeds which totals close to $5800, will go to Beckwith Camp and Conference Center in Fairhope. Another event is scheduled for the Destin area in January and there is some talk of a book signing at the Diocesan convention in February. Many thanks to The Rev. Thack Dyson of St. Paul's for arranging the event and a big applause goes to the members of the cooking ministry of St. Paul's. Lunch was excellent!

Beckwith Camp and Conference Center

Beckwith Board Names Interim Director of Operations

Massey GentryFAIRHOPE, Alabama - The Rev. Massey Gentry has been named interim Director of Operations for Beckwith Camp and Conference Center, according to Board Chairman, Hodge Alves.  The interim position is part time and Fr. Gentry will split his time between Beckwith and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bon Secour where he is currently part-time interim rector.

"We are pleased that Fr. Gentry is willing to oversee Beckwith operations for a period of time while we transition into a full, year round conference center in addition to the annual summer camp for youth," said Alves. "Fr. Gentry is a seasoned priest with many years of management experience."

Fr. Massey was born and grew up in the Birmingham, Alabama area.  He attained a bachelor degree in Philosophy and Religion from Birmingham-Southern College in 1967.  He attained a Master in Divinity at Chicago Theological Seminary in 1970.  From 1970 - 1976, he performed various ministries at United Methodist Church in Alabama.  He did further graduate study at The University of the South, Anglican Studies in 1978.  Fr. Massey was ordained in the Episcopal Orders in 1978.

From 1978 - 1989 Fr. Massey was Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Wetumpka, Alabama.  He also became Rector of St. Francis of Assissi , Pelham, Alabama from 1986-1989.  From 1989 - 1996 he was Canon to the Ordinary, Diocese of Alabama, where he was Executive to the Bishop relating to supervision of the Clergy.  After that he became Rector  of Christ Church, Las Vegas, Nevada from 1997-2006.

More recently he was Vice Rector of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas, one of the largest Episcopal churches in the US,  from 2006-2009.  He retired from the Diocese of Texas in 2009 and moved to Fairhope with his wife Jan, where he has been providing consulting help to parishes as directed by Bishop Duncan.   Fr. Massey and Jan have been married nearly 43 years.  They have four children and three grandchildren.

Holy Cross, Pensacola

Holy Cross Welcomes Noah's Ark
Submitted by Betty Enfinger

Our young children's room, nursery, and outdoor play area was renovated recently.  The nursery received a fresh coat of paint, new flooring, furniture, and the play area was mulched.  Many parishioners "stepped" forward to work on this project.

A delightful addition is a colorful mural of Noah's Ark that covers 15' of one wall. As the youngsters use the room, they will be reminded of this wonderful bible story. The mural was painted by Holy Cross member, John LeGrand and his daughter Jeanne LeGrand.

NoahsArkDuring the renovation, Fr. Jeff Jencks commented how wonderful it would be if a mural was painted on a wall.  Mr. LeGrand volunteered and, thus, began a labor of love. Many years ago John worked at the American Museum of Natural History illustrating animals and nature subjects.  He later moved on to Fortune Magazine and McGraw-Hill Publishing, where he was the art director for Little Golden Books designing children's books.  John retired in 1993 from LeGrand Advertising, Inc. and moved to Florida.  His daughter Jeanne worked on the project with her father and did most of the filling in of the colors.

Holy Cross is truly grateful for his beautiful depiction of Noah's Ark and all the talents used to make this place a special place for our children.  They will enjoy it for years to come.

A MOCKINGBIRD MINI-CONFERENCE IN PENSACOLA, FL

God's Grace When We Need It Most:
The Gospel For Hard Times

This November 19th and 20th, please join Christ Church Parish and Mockingbird Ministries, together with our special guests, the Rev. Dr. Paul F. M. Zahl, the Rev. John Zahl, the Rev. David Browder and Jeff Hual, as we take an in-depth look at how God's Grace can find us and transform us even in the midst of difficult and trying times. This subject has particular resonance in Pensacola right now, which has had an all-too-recent encounter with tragedy: the Gulf oil spill. Each talk will explore the theme of suffering from a different angle - you may view the conference schedule for more details. mockingbirdconferencepic

This mini-conference takes the same approach as the Mockingbird website: accessible to both believer and nonbeliever alike, culturally-engaged, theologically passionate, and, despite the heavy subject matter, fun. We also anticipate that it will be a time of extraordinary warmth, humor and fellowship - a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet some new ones.

As part of this year's event, Dr. Zahl is leading a special "pre-conference seminar" on preaching for clergy and para-church workers during the day on Friday.  Even if preaching is not your vocation, this time with Dr. Zahl on Friday is sure to be nothing short of amazing.  Everyone is warmly invited.

The cost to attend the main conference is $65 which includes dinner Friday and lunch Saturday; The cost to attend Dr. Zahl's preaching pre-conference during the day on Friday is $75 which includes lunch; The cost to attend both the main conference and the preaching pre-conference is $120 which includes lunch and dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday. The deadline to register is November 15.  Childcare is available.

Follow this link to Conference Registration.

We hope you will join us November 19 for an entire pre-conference on this subject from Paul Zahl; and that you'll stay with us for the main conference to hear talks from Paul Zahl, David Browder, John Zahl and Jeff Hual.

Taize' Prayer is continuing on the first and third Thursdays of the month. A group at St. Paul's, Daphne, will gather to pray for all of you and this world we live in. We meet in the narthex at 7 p.m. and, under candlelight, we "stop the world" for an hour and just quiet down as we share prayers, spoken and silent, gentle music from Taize and scripture. It's simple, calming and the world certainly needs all the prayers we can offer. Come and be calm with us!

Matching Gift Challenge to Raise $1 Million for Global Needs

Through November 30, any donation made to Episcopal Relief & Development will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000.  This means a total of up to $1 million for relief and development programs in the places that need them most.

The Matching Gift Challenge is a chance for donors to give with the knowledge that their contribution will have double the impact.  "If you give $50, you'll generate $100 in assistance to help people in need," said Judy Sawler, the organization's Manager of Direct Response Marketing, who is heading up the appeal.  "Donate $500 and people all over the world will benefit from $1,000 in food, medicine, clean water, opportunities to start businesses and much more."

Any size gift to any of Episcopal Relief & Development's funds - online, by mail or by phone - will be matched in full until November 30, or as long as matching funds are available.  The matched gift amount will be donated to the Global Needs fund, which sustains the organization's work toward alleviating hunger, promoting health, creating economic opportunities and overcoming disaster.
