A MOCKINGBIRD MINI-CONFERENCE IN PENSACOLA, FL

God's Grace When We Need It Most:
The Gospel For Hard Times

This November 19th and 20th, please join Christ Church Parish and Mockingbird Ministries, together with our special guests, the Rev. Dr. Paul F. M. Zahl, the Rev. John Zahl, the Rev. David Browder and Jeff Hual, as we take an in-depth look at how God's Grace can find us and transform us even in the midst of difficult and trying times. This subject has particular resonance in Pensacola right now, which has had an all-too-recent encounter with tragedy: the Gulf oil spill. Each talk will explore the theme of suffering from a different angle - you may view the conference schedule for more details. mockingbirdconferencepic

This mini-conference takes the same approach as the Mockingbird website: accessible to both believer and nonbeliever alike, culturally-engaged, theologically passionate, and, despite the heavy subject matter, fun. We also anticipate that it will be a time of extraordinary warmth, humor and fellowship - a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet some new ones.

As part of this year's event, Dr. Zahl is leading a special "pre-conference seminar" on preaching for clergy and para-church workers during the day on Friday.  Even if preaching is not your vocation, this time with Dr. Zahl on Friday is sure to be nothing short of amazing.  Everyone is warmly invited.

The cost to attend the main conference is $65 which includes dinner Friday and lunch Saturday; The cost to attend Dr. Zahl's preaching pre-conference during the day on Friday is $75 which includes lunch; The cost to attend both the main conference and the preaching pre-conference is $120 which includes lunch and dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday. The deadline to register is November 15.  Childcare is available.

Follow this link to Conference Registration.

We hope you will join us November 19 for an entire pre-conference on this subject from Paul Zahl; and that you'll stay with us for the main conference to hear talks from Paul Zahl, David Browder, John Zahl and Jeff Hual.

A Letter from The Rev. Greg Hein, Standing Committee President

The Five Marks of Mission and Our Diocesan Five Year Plan

By The Rev. Greg Hein, Standing Committee President

After an extensive conversation with the diocese by the "Blue Ribbon Committee" and members of the Standing Committee, a Five Year Plan was put together by members of the Standing Committee.  At our 2010 convention, the diocese adopted this plan as a means of moving forward as a diocese in the areas of leadership, stewardship, mission and ministry.  Following the convention, each congregation was asked to fill out a survey to assess where they were in the different areas so that progress could be measured.  We thank every congregation that completed the survey and the self-assessment.We thank all who have been moving forward into familiar as well as different areas of ministry. We trust that commissions and committees within the diocese have offered resources and assistance to each of you as needed.

We want to make it clear that we are not questioning the ministry that is being done in the congregations throughout the diocese.  We do know, through experience, that it is easy to give in to doing what we have always done, allowing inertia to take over and forgetting our obligation to do periodic self evaluation.   Download the full letter here

Episcopal Relief and Development

Matching Gift Challenge to Raise $1 Million for Global Needs

For the next six weeks, from October 19 through November 30, any donation made to Episcopal Relief & Development will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000.  This means a total of up to $1 million for relief and development programs in the places that need them most.

The Matching Gift Challenge is a chance for donors to give with the knowledge that their contribution will have double the impact.  "If you give $50, you'll generate $100 in assistance to help people in need," said Judy Sawler, the organization's Manager of Direct Response Marketing, who is heading up the appeal.  "Donate $500 and people all over the world will benefit from $1,000 in food, medicine, clean water, opportunities to start businesses and much more."

Any size gift to any of Episcopal Relief & Development's funds - online, by mail or by phone - will be matched in full until November 30, or as long as matching funds are available.  The matched gift amount will be donated to the Global Needs fund, which sustains the organization's work toward alleviating hunger, promoting health, creating economic opportunities and overcoming disaster.
