Innovative partnership aims to assist Episcopal churches to "go green"
Subsidies available to congregations

In an innovative venture that benefits congregations of all sizes, The Episcopal Church has partnered with GreenFaith, a leading national religious environmental group, to assist churches' efforts to "go green."   Many congregations have expressed the desire to be environmentally "green" and as ecologically responsible as possible. As a result, the collaboration between GreenFaith and The Episcopal Church provides a means for that effort.

To participate in the program, GreenFaith offers a sliding scale fee, based on congregational size. To mark the launch of this collaboration, the Economic/Environmental Affairs Office and GreenFaith are underwriting 50% of the tuition of 30 churches nationwide, enabling selected churches to enroll for a total discounted cost of $250 - $750.

GreenFaith will offer a free hour-long webinar to help congregational leadership understand the program and to answer questions and address concerns.

Taize' Prayer service returns to St. Paul's, Daphne

Taize' Prayer is continuing on the first and third Thursdays of the month. A group at St. Paul's, Daphne, will gather to pray for all of you and this world we live in. We meet in the narthex at 7 p.m. and, under candlelight, we "stop the world" for an hour and just quiet down as we share prayers, spoken and silent, gentle music from Taize and scripture. It's simple, calming and the world certainly needs all the prayers we can offer. Come and be calm with us!

Commission on the Environment and the Integrity of Creation

From the Chair of the Commission...

The Interfaith Environmental Initiative of Alabama, of which I'm a member, will be hosting an Energy and Water Stewardship Forum at the Birmingham otanical Gardens on October 21.  The cost for the day is $30 and includes breakfast and lunch.  The speakers are excellent and there will be lots of information that we can bring back to the diocese to get our congregations "greening".  I'm including attachments with information, registration instructions and the schedule.  If you can fit it into your schedule, it would be very worthwhile to attend.

Green Tips

  • Is an automated car wash greener? The answer is - it depends. If you pass a car wash on your way to and from work, or during any of your regular driving, it could be a more environmentally friendly alternative. Modern car washes use far less water than a home wash and they recycle their water. Automated car washes use anywhere from 20 to 45 gallons of water, but home washing can easily use in excess of a hundred gallons.
  • If getting to a car wash requires a special trip, then it's likely not a green option when you consider the emissions of your vehicle and gas consumption to and from the car wash.
