Episcopal Church joins 10.10.10 movement The Global Work Party to cut carbon emissions Share your activities and ideas at www.350.org [September
9, 2010] Mark October 10, 2010 - 10.10.10 - on your calendar as a day
to build community, have fun and cut carbon emissions. Michael
Schut, Episcopal Church Officer for Environmental/Economic Affairs,
says that individuals, families, neighborhoods, congregations, schools,
dioceses - communities of all kinds and sizes - can make a positive
impact on the future by participating in the international Global Work
Party movement on 10.10.10. So far the Global Work Party, sponsored by 350.org, lists 1214 actions planned in 117 countries. To join an already scheduled work party, or to register one, visit www.350.org. Schut
explained the significance of "350" as "350 parts per million (ppm) is
what scientists say is the safe upper limit of carbon in the atmosphere.
The current level is 390 ppm. To return to 350 ppm, we need to cut our
carbon emissions." Schut offers some activities to consider for 10.10.10 - Install weather-stripping, efficient lighting and more insulation in your parish and your home; - Plant trees; - Harvest community gardens to demonstrate local food solutions; - Organize a carpool/bike to church Sunday; - Host a bike-repair workshop or install bike racks outside your church; - Paint your roof white to cool off without air-conditioning; - Organize a discussion on the environment with your congregation, youth group, and others; - Ring bells 350 times. Resources and ideas for observing 10.10.10 are here: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/109350_123831_ENG_HTM.htm and http://www.350.org/

Green Tips from the Commission on the Environment and the Integrity of Creation
Editor's note....NEW!! Look for "Green Tips" in each issue of The Coastline provided by the Commission
on the Environment and the Integrity of Creation, with special thanks to
Lella Lowe of Church of the Redeemer.
-
If water runs off your lawn
easily, split your watering time into shorter periods to allow for better
absorption.
-
Check the root zone of your
lawn or garden for moisture before watering using a spade or trowel. If it's
still moist two inches under the soil surface, you still have enough water.
-
Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when
temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.

Commission on Youth Ministries
|
Hi it's Zac Russell. As a member of our Diocesan
Commission on Youth Ministries, I attended a meeting August 28th
where we discussed many things concerning the future of our diocesan-wide
youth. We talked briefly of new beginnings, Happening, and the
Episcopal Youth Event, including their faults and where they are
possibly heading in the near future. However the bulk of our time was
spent ironing out the details concerning a new youth program called 4
Corners. 4 corners is a quarterly held lock-in for high school students
full of worship, games, singing, food, and fellowship. The first one
will be held November 6-7 at Saint Paul's in Daphne. The registration
deadline is Friday, October 15th and the cost is $30.
Further details and registration forms will be available soon. In His Service, Zac Russel St. Peter's, Bon Secour

Bishops to meet September 16-12
The House of Bishops of The Episcopal Church will meet in Phoenix, AZ (Diocese of AZ) September 16 - 21. Among the major topics to be discussed are immigration, congregational development, and evangelism.
The Episcopal Church joins October 3 National Day of Prayer for healing in the Gulf of Mexico [September
9, 2010] The Episcopal Church is joining other religious denominations
and groups in calling for a national day of prayer and action for the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, October 3. Called
"Seeking God's Grace for the Gulf: A Day of Worship, Reflection and
Healing," the effort is led by the National Council of Churches (NCC)
Eco-Justice Working Group. "The National Day of Prayer is a way
for all of us to remember the tragedy of the oil spill, and to pray for
the healing of the Gulf Coast," explained Michael Schut,
Episcopal Church Officer for Environmental/Economic Affairs. "It's also
an opportunity to pray for the healing of our own grief connected to
such extensive ecological and economic damage, and to advocate for
stronger regulation of oil drilling operations." Environmental resources from the Episcopal Church: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/119103_123121_ENG_HTM.htm Educational resources, prayers and suggested actions: http://www.nccecojustice.org/oilspill/seekinggodsgrace.php
Presiding officers, Executive Council member urge congregations to study the Anglican Covenant
By Matthew Davies, September 03, 2010
[Episcopal News Service]
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, House of Deputies
President Bonnie Anderson and Executive Council member Rosalie Simmonds
Ballentine are calling on all Episcopal congregations to engage in
discussion of the proposed Anglican Covenant at some time during the next two years.
The Episcopal Church leaders suggested in a Sept. 3 letter that congregations consider organizing a discussion group on the
covenant during Advent (2010 or 2011) or Lent (2011 or 2012) or at
another time before General Convention in 2012.

Opinion.... from Episcopal Life Online
|
"A maybe-truth that happens to agree with one's predispositions and fears
is more satisfying than an actual-truth that requires one to think
again." Tom Ehrich, writer, church consultant and Episcopal priest
[Episcopal News Service]
Everyone seems to have a solution for "restoring" America.
Take power away from liberal intellectuals, say some, and put "ordinary" people in charge. Or make this a white-run, Christian nation. Or insist on leaders who are intelligent and informed. Or stop wasting American lives in pointless wars. Or honor truth-telling and stop allowing ideologues to finance phony "research" to serve their interests. Or restore traditional marriage and family life. Or allow new forms of marriage and family.

Speaking Out Issue advocacy and the Episcopal Public Policy Network
"God has given us a mission to care for our neighbors and all of
creation. To do so, we must put aside our narrow self-interest to heal
the hurting, fill the hungry, set the captives free, and bind up the
wounds of creation. I invite you to join in that mission as we advocate
for government policies that serve justice, peace, and the dignity of
all." - Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori
By Mary Getz, Online Communications officer for EPPN
Traveling around the country on behalf of the Episcopal Public Policy
Network for the last six years, one of the most frequent comments that I
heard was, "I didn't even realize that the Episcopal Church did
advocacy!"
We certainly do! The EPPN is a network of justice-seeking
Episcopalians across the country who are committed to the active
ministry of public policy advocacy. The EPPN does this advocacy work in
partnership with the Episcopal Church's Office of Government Relations.
When people find out that the church is involved in issue advocacy, a barrage of questions usually follows. Read these FAQ

ECVA Exhibit

New exhibit online, new call for entries
Curator's Statement:
In this exhibition, the
third in our Baptismal Covenant series, artists were invited to respond to
these lines from the covenant:
"Will you strive for
justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God's help."
The
resulting exhibition articulates the inherent tension between care for
ourselves, our own families and communities, and a respectful concern for
the broader community of faiths, cultures, and the environment. Each image
calls us to a broader world view, inviting us to see ourselves as part of
a larger whole and to act upon that understanding. We invite you to sit
with these images and see what response awakens within you.
Diane Walker Curator
New call for entries! Deadline is November 7, 2010 Click here for details
