St. Andrew's, Panama City Observes Quiet Day

CenteringPrayer - St.Andrews
"Authentic prayer is opening to God's gracious presence with all that we are...prayer also arises from our deepest hope: for the abundance of life
that comes when we abide our deepest home, our widest consciousness. Prayer is our bridge to Home."   Tilden Edwards

The Centering Prayer Group at St. Andrew's, Panama City observed a quiet day Friday, August 13, beginning with words read from Joan Chittister, O.S.B.

The day concluded with a silent lunch where the following words were prayed from The Four Great Actions:
  • With the first taste, I promise to offer you joy
  • With the second taste, I promise to help relieve the sufferings of others
  • With the third taste, I promise to see others' joy as my own
  • With the fourth taste, I promise to learn the way of peace, presence, and equanimity.

St. Andrews VBS sets focus on MDGs and the Diocesan Five Year Plan

St. Andrew's, Panama City held an inter-generational, inter-denominational Bible School this past week which focused on the Millenium Development Goal of helping to eliminate poverty by 1015, and on the diocesan Five Year Plan. The children focused on Africa and the poverty that exists. They found out what it was like living in 5 x 7 huts, bargaining in the market place, and eating African food. Director, Malinda Hall, helped them to understand that God is everywhere, not just in a land where there are so many advantages. The children learned to dress in African garb, go to the market place, sing African songs Many adults attended, helped in the kitchen, and enjoyed eating with the kids. The older youth wrote Prayers of the People to be used on Sunday in the worship service, where they will be recognized and sing Syahumba. The week ended on Saturday when a Beads for Life party was held. The 90% of the proceeds from beads for life go to the Ugandan women who make the beads from paper.

Episcopal Relief & Development Supports Three Gulf Dioceses Caring for Communities Affected by Oil Spill

ERDSt. Andrews By-the-Sea, Destin is highlighted in this article

Even though the oil well has been capped and clean-up measures are moving into a new phase, the economic and emotional impact of the April 2010 oil spill is still devastating the Gulf Coast. With the help of Episcopal Relief & Development, Episcopalians from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle are responding to the needs of their communities. Episcopal Relief & Development's USA Disaster Response Program is helping to equip these dioceses and parishes to meet both the immediate and longer-term needs of people struggling to put their lives back together after the spill.

The Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast is responding to the crisis by transforming existing parish ministries to meet new community needs. St. Andrew's By-the-Sea in Destin, Florida, has expanded its feeding and homeless ministries to serve individuals and families who have been hurt by the collapse of the local fishing and tourism industries.

Hurricane Emergency Management

By Sally Greene, Executive Director, Wilmer Hall Children's Home

The oil spill has been at the forefront of the news this summer on the gulf coast.  This has been a devastating disaster for our area and everyone is working to respond as effectively as possible.  Even though we do not want to think about another catastrophic event, coastal residents have to be vigilant with regard to hurricane season. Individuals, as well as parishes, businesses and corporations need to have a plan in place in case a hurricane hits their area.

Wilmer Hall has a specific policy and procedure document for hurricane emergency management.  Read the highlights here

SOLO FLIGHT: "One is a Whole Number"

solo flight logoAs Solo Flight gathers for its 20th consecutive year, the coordinators are discerning the future and looking to conduct visioning sessions centering on being single in The Episcopal Church.

"Solo Flight Episcopalians - single, divorced and widowed of all ages - have been gathering for a weekend of personal and spiritual growth, fellowship, networking, worship, outreach, evangelism, and fun for two decades," noted Dr. Kay Collier McLaughlin, founder of Solo Flight Ministries With Single Adults and Solo Flight Conferences. "This year, we are discerning together where God is calling The Episcopal Church in general and Solo Flight in particular in terms of ministry with single adults, and if the Solo Flight ministry for single adults continues."

The 2010 Solo Flight National Conference for Single Adults will be September 3-6 at the Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond, Virginia.

Remembering Jonathan M. Daniels 45 years after Selma

Hundreds gather for commemorations in Alabama, Wyoming

By Pat McCaughan, August 16, 2010

[Episcopal News Service] The 45th anniversary of the death of Jonathan
Myrick Daniels, an Episcopal seminarian-activist killed in Alabama
during the civil rights movement, was commemorated in congregations
during the Aug. 14-15 weekend.

Hayneville 2010Bishop Todd Ousley of the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan was a
featured speaker at an Aug. 14 pilgrimage that drew hundreds to
Hayneville, a predominantly African American town of about 1,000
residents, where Daniels was killed in 1965.

Ousley, a descendant of slaveholders and an adoptive parent of two African American children, said that while the Episcopal Church has made great strides in dealing with racism "this will be a perpetual struggle for us."

"There's a big part of me right now that feels that some of the General Convention mandates and some of the programs we've attempted make it easy for us to check off a box, to feel that we've dealt with the racism issue and to convince ourselves that we can move on to the next thing," he said. "But look at the existing segregation within our congregations, at the limited numbers of African Americans and persons of color who are involved in the broader life of our church," he added. "We have a long, long way to go."

Anglicans Online sketch
"Those who came before us saw the value and importance of maintaining a place where people gather to worship God. Through their generosity, they made certain that our church could be passed down for our use and benefit. But we wonder whether funds established through the years have made us lazy."
