Greetings!

The Jonathan Myrick Daniels Pilgrimage
is Saturday, August 14th, in Hayneville, AL. For those who cannot make it to Hayneville, you can watch an award winning production from the Episcopal Media Center on the same day!  Find links and details in the article below.

This year marks the 75th anniversary
of Forward Movement. (Read the Editor's Notes) In the August/September/October 2010 edition of Forward Day-by-Day, the reflections and meditations are a compilation of readings from past issues.  I've already jumped ahead and read several future entries and in doing so, found a wonderful page of previously published prayers in the back of the booklet.

Here are two of my favorites:

I thank you for the suffering and trials of my life, which are also gifts and which, together with my mistakes, are among my most important teachers.
- Native American Omaha Indian Prayer

and...

O God, life has taken a good deal from me, but I begin by thanking you for all that life has left to me.
- William Barclay

You may order an online subscription to Forward Day by Day or simply pick up a copy at your church.  And when you do, be sure to turn to pages 94-95 in the most recent edition for more previously published  prayers. (Links and details may be found in the article below)

Be sure to scroll down and see the last block for selected readings you may enjoy.

Peace.

St. Augustine's, Navarre parishioners experience a "Canoeucharist" !

Submitted by Sarah McCarren, Coastline Communicator
St. Augustine's of Canterbury, Navarre

Canoeucharist
Milton, FL - Parishioners of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Navarre celebrated Eucharist on Coldwater Creek near Milton on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Approximately 30 parishioners of all ages gathered in the parish hall and then carpooled to Bob's Canoes. Braving the rainy weather, parishioners floated down the creek in canoes, tubes and kayaks together for a one-of-a-kind fellowship and worship event.  A good time was had by all!

Forward Movement turns 75 years old

Effort to re-invigorate publisher echoes its founders

By Mary Frances Schjonberg, August 04, 2010

[Episcopal News Service] The little booklets get tucked into purses, suit pockets and back pockets. They get taken out when their readers have a quiet moment to spend in prayer. For 75 years the Forward Day By Day booklets have been giving Episcopalians and others a page-a-day way to reflect on their faith.

Now, Forward Movement, its publisher, is looking for new ways to continue living out the mission given to it during a financially bleak time in the life of the Episcopal Church and the world. Forward Movement board members, staff and experts from outside the organization are spending this anniversary year leading an effort to dream about and plan strategically for the years to come.

"We're looking at how we can make full use of social networking and digital communications to reinvigorate the life of the church," the Rev. Richard Schmidt, Forward Movement's editor and director, told Episcopal News Service recently. "I know that the future will not consist entirely of print resources, particularly not of small pocket-sized books and pamphlets. I have no expectation that that market is going to disappear in the foreseeable future, but it needs to be supplemented with other things."

"I don't see it as a question of either print or digital," he said. "I see it as a both/and."

Editor's Note: As most of you know, Dick Schmidt is a former Coastline Editor and was Rector of St. Paul's, Daphne, for ten years. Also, he married my husband and me!

Jonathan Myrick Daniels (March 20, 1939 - August 20, 1965) was an Episcopal seminarian who was killed in Hayneville, Alabama while working during the Civil Rights Movement. His death helped galvanize support for the civil rights movement within the Episcopal church, where he is named as a martyr.

Episcopal Online invites you to hold classes and educate those in your parish about this important leader from the Episcopal Church. Here I Am, Send Me is available in DVD format from the online store if you would like to bring this story to those in your community.

SOLO FLIGHT: "One is a Whole Number"

solo flight logoAs Solo Flight gathers for its 20th consecutive year, the coordinators are discerning the future and looking to conduct visioning sessions centering on being single in The Episcopal Church.

"Solo Flight Episcopalians - single, divorced and widowed of all ages - have been gathering for a weekend of personal and spiritual growth, fellowship, networking, worship, outreach, evangelism, and fun for two decades," noted Dr. Kay Collier McLaughlin, founder of Solo Flight Ministries With Single Adults and Solo Flight Conferences. "This year, we are discerning together where God is calling The Episcopal Church in general and Solo Flight in particular in terms of ministry with single adults, and if the Solo Flight ministry for single adults continues."

The 2010 Solo Flight National Conference for Single Adults will be September 3-6 at the Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond, Virginia.

ECVA call for entries

CALL FOR ENTRIES: JUSTICE AND PEACE
DEADLINE: AUGUST 15

In this exhibition, the third in our Baptismal Covenant series, we invite you as artists to respond to these lines from the covenant:
 Justice - Peace logo
"Will you strive for justice and peace among all people,
and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God's help."

Though our call to justice and peace flows directly from Jesus' prime commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves, it is surely not unique to Episcopalians, or even to Christianity: a concern for justice and peace, and compassion which is the root of that concern, are common to all faith traditions.

And yet, despite our common call to compassion, the indignities of war and injustice are experienced daily throughout the world without regard as to nation or faith.

More about this call for entries
ECVA website
Current exhibition

The mission of The Episcopal Church and Visual Arts (ECVA) is to encourage artists, individuals, congregations, and scholars to engage the visual arts in the spiritual life of the church. ECVA values the significance of visual imagery in spiritual formation and the development of faith, and creates programs to support those who are engaged in using the visual arts in spiritual life.

Some reading for you.....

From Nancy Duvall....a piece written in 2004 that still holds true today....(thanks to former Coastline Editor, David Clothier, for sending this in)
The Welcome....its important

Click here for a piece on FORGIVENESS, by Dr. Don Palmer, Parishioner of St. Paul's, Magnolia Springs and Editor of St. Paul's newsletter.

Read this excellent sermon by our Presiding Bishop....here's an excerpt:

"...Travel light - don't bother with all that other baggage.  Let go of all the impedimenta that want to tie you down to pre-conceptions, cultural taboos and expectations.  Go and proclaim peace.  Eat with anybody who offers to share a meal, offer healing to anyone who's hurting, and tell them that God is near.  And if you aren't accepted, don't fuss, just move on and try the next person.  Healing and reconciling need our active labor and participation.  Disciples are supposed to build bridges wherever possible."
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
