ERD in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast

Corrections: Fr. Tom Dwyer's last name was misspelled in the last Coastline.  My apologies!
Greetings!

St. Paul's, Magnolia Springs wishes to share its prayer for use during the oil spill crisis....

Our Prayer for the Gulf

"Heavenly Father, we beseech you, take into your loving arms the eleven souls lost in the explosion in the Gulf.  Comfort their families as they grieve.  Please also help our community face the serious challenges ahead.  We beseech you to protect that part of your creation which is threatened and upon which we are vitally dependent.  We humbly ask that you assist us to discern the proper path.  Fill our minds with wisdom, fill our hearts with courage, and our souls with the strength to persevere as your will be done.  All this we ask in the name of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.   Amen."

THE COLLECT

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Back from Haiti

By Fr. Keith Talbert
St. Paul's, Foley
KT-Haiti2
"Kado yo nan Seyè a pou pèp Seyè a" were the most striking words of my recent trip to Haiti. Spoken in Creole by the priest at communion, we know them as "The gifts of God for the people of God."  In a flash my experience was transformed as I knew that the gifts I have received are indeed intended for those most in need. As we shared the Body and Blood of Christ all of us gathered around the table were for a holy moment One Body in Christ. And by God's grace the gifts we offered will be transformed to his honor and glory.

For a week I was blessed to be part of a 12 person mission team comprised of folks from Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina. The mission is an ongoing effort called "Hope for Haiti" sponsored by the Diocese of Alabama and others passionate for the people of Haiti. We were priests, students, attorneys, teachers, landscapers, investors, and prosthetic specialists. We were called to be there.   Full story

Holy Nativity, Panama City, celebrates Musician's Sunday

By Marqua Brunette, Director of Choirs
Holy Nativity, Panama City
June 20, 2010

Music has historically been a vital part of the worship of God since the early days of the Church. While not the most important element of the worship service, it serves to work with the other elements of the liturgy in harmony. Because the importance of music in our worship is recognized, our Diocese designated June 20, 2010 as a Sunday to pray for church musicians. For that reason it was decided to make this a special celebration of music in the lives of all who worship at Holy Nativity. Full story here

Murray House News

Submitted by Fr. Thomas Heard, President
Murray House Board of Directors

Murray HouseGood news from Murray House! On Tuesday, a surveyor from the Alabama Department of Public Health arrived at Murray House to inspect our operation as a follow-up to the inspection last July and our subsequent corrective actions.

I am very pleased to report that at our exit interview with her today, the surveyor found absolutely no residual issues, finds us in compliance with our plan of correction, and will be recommending reinstatement of our full license to her management. She commented that "it is as different as night and day" and that it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to review a really excellent facility. We've felt this way about Murray House for a while now, but it's certainly affirming to hear it from someone else!

We have secured interim funding to allow us to rebuild the census at Murray House. In combination with the positive results on a long overdue inspection, the clouds seem to be lifting and we are looking forward to brighter days ahead.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Fr. Thomas Heard: theard@stjohnsmobile.org

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Our Province of the Episcopal Church leads the way in disaster preparedness.   The Province IV web site has available to download, the Province IV Disaster Relief Manual: Click here for your copy

This manual can be very helpful in ministering to those in our parish and those in our community, especially the elderly who may need extra assistance when a disaster strikes.

The manual is broken down into five parts:
    * Part 1 is the Introduction
    * Part 2 deals with decisions that a parish can make in advance, that will help during and after a disaster.  I call your attention to "Church-in-a-box." It is a very comprehensive home communion kit.
    * Part 3 deals with decisions that individuals and families can make in advance.  I would like to call particular attention to "Ready-to-go" kits found on Page 4
    * Part 4 deals with what to do when a disaster occurs ... I think you can skip the Winter Weather section
    * Section 5 lists additional resources.  I like the information found on NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
On the NOAA web site you can track severe weather http://www.weather.gov/

They also have a nice preparedness page.

Volunteers needed for a Peer Listener Training Program regarding the oil crisis

A Peer Listener Training Program (PLTP)
is being initiated to train local residents with basic knowledge to provide help to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill impacted communities. The lay listener acts as an advisor, friend, and referral agent for individuals within a community who may not desire to seek professional services, or may not know that help is available.

Peer Listeners should be individuals within a community who are highly trusted, dependable, and discreet resident volunteers. They should be representative of all cultural, ethnic, and age groups within coastal communities.  More here

SOLO FLIGHT: "One is a Whole Number"

solo flight logoAs Solo Flight gathers for its 20th consecutive year, the coordinators are discerning the future and looking to conduct visioning sessions centering on being single in The Episcopal Church.

"Solo Flight Episcopalians - single, divorced and widowed of all ages - have been gathering for a weekend of personal and spiritual growth, fellowship, networking, worship, outreach, evangelism, and fun for two decades," noted Dr. Kay Collier McLaughlin, founder of Solo Flight Ministries With Single Adults and Solo Flight Conferences. "This year, we are discerning together where God is calling The Episcopal Church in general and Solo Flight in particular in terms of ministry with single adults, and if the Solo Flight ministry for single adults continues."

The 2010 Solo Flight National Conference for Single Adults will be September 3-6 at the Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond, Virginia.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: JUSTICE AND PEACE
DEADLINE: AUGUST 15

In this exhibition, the third in our Baptismal Covenant series, we invite you as artists to respond to these lines from the covenant:
 Justice - Peace logo
"Will you strive for justice and peace among all people,
and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God's help."

Though our call to justice and peace flows directly from Jesus' prime commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves, it is surely not unique to Episcopalians, or even to Christianity: a concern for justice and peace, and compassion which is the root of that concern, are common to all faith traditions.

And yet, despite our common call to compassion, the indignities of war and injustice are experienced daily throughout the world without regard as to nation or faith.

More about this call for entries
ECVA website
Current exhibition

The mission of The Episcopal Church and Visual Arts (ECVA) is to encourage artists, individuals, congregations, and scholars to engage the visual arts in the spiritual life of the church. ECVA values the significance of visual imagery in spiritual formation and the development of faith, and creates programs to support those who are engaged in using the visual arts in spiritual life.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
