Greetings!
|
It has been seven months since our longtime diocesan
newspaper, The Coastline, ceased printing due to printing expenses and
industry trends. Since then, our e-newsletters have become much more
than events "Around the Diocese." The newsletters present everything the
former print version offered, including national church news, diocesan
news, clergy news, and photographs.
During our current oil crisis, our diocesan website and e-news have become primary news sources for Episcopal Communicators around our country and abroad. The rapport between our diocese and many others has given literal meaning to the
COASTLINE name in addition to its
historical context. So, after giving a few months of respect to the presumed death of the hard copy news, we have returned to the title COASTLINE, the familiar name of
what was always our primary news source in the diocese. It is meet and right so to do.
Have
a safe Fourth. Thank you for
reading.
Peace.
Cindy McCrory Director of Communications, Editor, The Coastline coastline@diocgc.org
Please note: The COASTLINE will be bi-weekly through August. The
diocesan calendar is significantly slower in July and August. But you won't miss
anything! E-postcards will be sent as needed to get short-term
information to
you.

Almighty God, you have built your
Church upon the
foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the
chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit
by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Holy Nativity, Panama City, holds successful English Tea fundraiser By Suzanne Grossman and submitted by Madge Smith, Holy Nativity, Panama City
|
 Panama City, FL - A
wonderful time was had by all who
attended Holy Nativity's 14th English Tea and Fashion Show on Saturday,
June 5th. Proceeds from the event were donated to three local
charities, The Council on Aging, Anchorage Children's Home, and The
Mission to help them in their efforts to provide
services to local people. We are very blessed to have such dedicated
members of Holy Nativity, who provided the delicious home made cakes
and sandwiches that were enjoyed by all the attendees, the models who
showed off the cloths with great aplomb, the ladies who decorated the
tables with their lovely china, and those who worked behind the
scenes. Without these wonderful members of Holy Nativity donating of
their time and talents we would not be able to provide every penny
collect to these wonderful charities'. With God's grace we hope Holy
Nativity will be able in the future to continue this worthwhile event.

A View of the Oil Spill from Dauphin Island by John Porter, St. Francis, Dauphin Island
John Porter | [Episcopal News Service]
As I sit here writing this piece from my home on Dauphin Island, a
barrier island off the coast Mobile, Alabama, in the Gulf of Mexico, I
can look across the salt marsh to the entrance to Bayou Heron, where an
oil containment boom stretches across the entrance.
This boom is an effort to keep the Deep Horizon oil spill from
entering the bayou and killing the grasses. Maybe a pelican will fly by
diving for fish, followed by one or more laughing gulls, attempting to
steal his catch. Or maybe a black skimmer will glide silently across
the surface of the water, skimming small fish to take back to the young
in the nest. As I watch this, I am inclined to reflect on the thoughts
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori recently expressed: "We are all connected, and
there is no escape; our common future depends on how we care for the
rest of the natural world."
This is so true, and it is so evident here on Dauphin Island. Read this in its entirety

Episcopal
Church Economic Justice Loan Committee provides funding for mission, ministry of the
Church Revolving
pool of $7 million available for investment [June 23, 2010] Funds are available for
mortgages, small business loans, community economic development,
affordable housing, job creation and other avenues for the mission and
ministry of The Episcopal Church through the Economic Justice Loan
Funds, administered by the Economic Justice Loan Committee (EJLC). Established
in 1988 through Resolution C030 by General Convention and in 1989 by
The Episcopal Church Executive Council, EJLC administers a loan
portfolio of $7 million in Church assets. Loans, usually between
$150,000 to $350,000, are granted for a term of three to five years to
organizations; individuals are not eligible for the EJLC loans. "The
funds are used to provide credit to institutions who may not qualify in
the regular markets, but who have worthy community development goals and
projects, including housing, social services, childhood education and
small business development," explained Margareth Crosnier de Bellaistre,
Episcopal Church Director of Investment Management and Banking. "EJLC
does not lend directly to the end-users of the funds. Rather, we lend
only to financial intermediaries. They, in turn, re-lend to
organizations, groups and individuals with appropriate economic justice
development goals and programs." Full story here

SOLO FLIGHT: "One is a Whole Number"
|
As Solo Flight
gathers for its 20th consecutive year, the coordinators
are discerning the future and looking to conduct visioning sessions
centering on being single in The Episcopal Church.
"Solo Flight Episcopalians - single, divorced and widowed of all ages
- have been gathering for a weekend of personal and spiritual growth,
fellowship, networking, worship, outreach, evangelism, and fun for two
decades," noted Dr. Kay Collier McLaughlin, founder of Solo Flight
Ministries With Single Adults and Solo Flight Conferences. "This year,
we are discerning together where God is calling The Episcopal Church in
general and Solo Flight in particular in terms of ministry with single
adults, and if the Solo Flight ministry for single adults continues."
The
2010 Solo Flight National Conference for Single Adults will be
September 3-6 at the Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond, Virginia. Full details here

ECVA call for entries

CALL
FOR ENTRIES: JUSTICE AND PEACE DEADLINE: AUGUST 15
In
this
exhibition, the third in our Baptismal Covenant series, we
invite
you as artists to respond to these lines from the covenant:
"Will
you strive for justice and peace among all people,
and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God's help."
Though
our call to justice and peace flows directly from
Jesus' prime commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves,
it is
surely not unique to Episcopalians, or even to Christianity:
a
concern for justice and peace, and compassion which is the
root of
that concern, are common to all faith traditions.
And
yet, despite our common call to compassion, the
indignities of war and injustice are experienced daily
throughout
the world without regard as to nation or faith.
More about this call for entries ECVA website Current exhibition
The mission of The Episcopal Church and
Visual Arts (ECVA)
is to
encourage artists, individuals, congregations, and
scholars to
engage the visual arts in the spiritual life of the
church. ECVA
values the significance of visual imagery in spiritual
formation
and the development of faith, and creates programs to
support
those who are engaged in using the visual arts in
spiritual life.
