Eugene Johnston of St. John's, Mobile, our Province IV ERD representative, announces VIGILance 2010, a National Hour of Prayer Vigil for God's Earth to be held Thursday, June 17th. Several churches in our diocese are holding a service, some at 6 pm, others at 7 pm. See the list here. For those who do not have a service to attend, take this time for your personal prayer vigil. Click here for pastoral resources offered by priests in our diocese. ______________ NOTE: St. John's, Pensacola, is having a SUMMER CORN FESTIVAL on Saturday, June 26th. This announcement should have been in last week's issue of Around the Diocese. My apologies! Scroll down for details! CORRECTION: In last week's story on St. Monica's, the name Renae Ahearn should have been listed as Addison Ahearn. Thank you for reading. Peace.

St. Andrews, Panama City, parishioners hold service for the healing and blessing of the waters

Panama City, FL - Late in the afternoon of June 9, 2010, during WOW (Worship on Wednesdays), parishioners of St. Andrews, Panama City, stopped traffic on the busy beach thoroughfare of Highway 98 and processed one block from the church to St. Andrew Bay which flows into the Gulf of Mexico.
Standing in the sand, the Rev. Dr. Margaret Shepard, Interim Rector of St. Andrews, led the group in prayers and canticles and followed A Litany for the Gulf of Mexico in a time of crisis, written by The Rev. Albert Kennington of our diocese. The Rev. Shepard then stepped into the bay and asperged the warm, clear waters using water from the River Jordan while the people sang "All creatures of our God and King." More photos here

CALL FOR ENTRIES: JUSTICE AND PEACE DEADLINE: AUGUST 15

In
this
exhibition, the third in our Baptismal Covenant series, we
invite
you as artists to respond to these lines from the covenant:
"Will
you strive for justice and peace among all people,
and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God's help."
Though
our call to justice and peace flows directly from
Jesus' prime commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves,
it is
surely not unique to Episcopalians, or even to Christianity:
a
concern for justice and peace, and compassion which is the
root of
that concern, are common to all faith traditions.
And
yet, despite our common call to compassion, the
indignities of war and injustice are experienced daily
throughout
the world without regard as to nation or faith.
More about this call for entries ECVA website Current exhibition
The mission of The Episcopal Church and
Visual Arts (ECVA)
is to
encourage artists, individuals, congregations, and
scholars to
engage the visual arts in the spiritual life of the
church. ECVA
values the significance of visual imagery in spiritual
formation
and the development of faith, and creates programs to
support
those who are engaged in using the visual arts in
spiritual life.

VESTRY 101: Encouraging Hearts and Souls
Vestries that plan and make decisions based on strengths rather than weaknesses move the congregation further along on its mission
By Jim Lemler for the Episcopal Church Foundation Excerpt from May/June issue of The Vestry Papers
"How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord..."
We sing about it. We hear about it, and we pray about it...the firm foundation on which our faith rests. It is the foundation of faith and of Jesus Christ himself. It is the foundation for the whole Christian community and particularly for its leadership.
However, at this moment there is some significant seismic activity. Things are shaking and quaking in a time of accelerated cultural and ecclesial change. We worry about cracks in our foundations as we face new economic and institutional challenges. The vestry is in the midst of all this. Vestry leaders are responsible for building on the foundation and for stability of the life and health of the congregation they lead. These leaders must be grounded themselves, solidly connected to and resting on the foundation of faith. Their souls need to be rooted in the Gospel and its faith, hope, and love so that together they may create a Christian community of hope, not fear, and unity, not discord. Where are we to find strength? How are our hearts and souls encouraged? What can we do?
Read about ten practices and dispositions that can help vestry leaders today

Wireless microphones under new rules
Does your church use a wireless microphone? New rules of the Federal Communications Commission restrict the frequency on which wireless microphones can operate. The 700 MHz band became off-limits to wireless mics on June 12. That band now is dedicated to public safety agencies. Continued use of such microphones could result in large fines. More information is on the FCC website at http://fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones |
