"Embody the Mitzvah Through Manners"

Mitzvah Manners

The bar or bat mitzvah is a rite of passage into adulthood - a milestone event in the life of a young Jew and his or her family. Everything that happens during this time-honored celebration is a reflection on him or her, and it is the responsibility of the bar or bat mitzvah, as host, to set the tone and maintain decorum throughout - from the religious service to the reception afterward.

Subway Etiquette
We think this idea by brave artist, Jay Shells, is fabulous!  He was tired of the little irrations he experienced while riding Manhattan's subways and decided to take matters into his own hands by creating a "Subway Etiquette"  poster campaign.  After surveying 100 people he narrowed the posters down to the top 10 grievances.

Manners Marathon
Marathon

The Huffington Post featured an article written by Jodi R. R. Smith that I found interesting. She titled it "Manners Marathon" which was a metaphor for all the training, planning and preparation that is frequently involved with being well-mannered and behaving appropriately in the world.  This visual of the marathon resonated for me because I often share with clients that being well-mannered is sometimes hard work and takes practice. She lays out a few common scenarios that drive home the point that a small dose of decency and thoughtfulness can make a big difference in "winning the race".

Greetings!

We are proud to announce our latest endeavor with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles.  Beverly Hills Manners will be presenting a 6-week pilot program for the city's youth, ages 12 to 15.  The  series will consist of etiquette and manners training followed by a yearlong mentoring program including educational and cultural outings for the children to put into practice all they have learned.  We are grateful for this amazing opportunity and know it will be a rewarding experience.

Last month marked the final session of the first season of our "Let's Dance!" Cotillion and it was truly a memorable evening.  The red carpet theme set the tone while the children received their Certificates of Completion and celebrated with family and friends.  Many of the boys and girls shared their positive experiences and were excited to return again in the Fall.  Now we are busy preparing for Cotillion 2010 with a newly revised curriculum, lineup of dances and special guests. Current registration is officially open.  Don't delay, reserve your space and receive a 10% early enrollment discount!

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, we bring you our "From the Source" article from resident expert Rachel Sarnoff of EcoStiletto.com.  Rachel answers a few of our burning eco-manners questions, as well as enlightens us with great tips and advice for proper recycling.

Finally, April is a month for Spring cleaning and reorganization.  Take this time to add a little etiquette training into the agenda.  Enroll your children in one of our unique programs below or call us to inquire about private instruction.

Happy Earth Day!

Rachel SarnoffBHM: What do you believe are the most important ways we can show good manners towards the environment?

ES: I think it's just a simple question of respect. If you respect something, you think about your impact. You consider your actions in a different way. We can't all be treehuggers all the time, but we can think about the choices we're making, and look for ways to act in more sustainable ways.  Click here to read more!
