Coco Channel once said, "A woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future."  Not so sure about that...but when it comes to perfume how much is too much?  Are you a dabbler or a douser?  A few tips on proper perfume etiquette will ensure you are not regarded as the sister to Pepé Le Pew.

Table Setting
Greetings!

Here we are, already into the throws of a new year and a chance at a new you.  Some of us entered this new decade feeling incredibly lucky and completely content and happy with our lives, and others felt a bit more restless, a tad disappointed and perhaps more willing to embrace some  self-improvement. My personal feeling is that no matter what side of the fence you fall on, everyone can stand to benefit from a few life tools to fine tune us and keep us growing. Luckily, we are here to assist you on your journey and we are dedicated in 2010 to bringing you more useful tips and information you can use and apply in your everyday life.

Beginning this month, we are kicking off a new feature called "From the Source". Here we are seeking expert advice from top leaders in their fields to speak about manners and etiquette from their perspective and how it affects their business and their lives.  Since our January issue is  dedicated to health and well-being, we thought it was quite appropriate to connect with Nanette Pattee Francini, President and Co-Founder of The Sports Club/LA.  She is recognized as a top fitness/lifestyle expert and business visionary overseeing the nation's leading five star fitness company and we are thrilled that she so graciously shared with us her tips for a more civilized gym experience.

Additionally, in this week's blog we are going to weigh in on the top 5 ways manners can have a direct and positive impact on your health and well-being.

We hope you'll use the turning of a new year and a new decade to really "Rock Your Manners" and witness the unlimited transformation it brings.

Very best,

Sports Club LAAt The Sports Club/LA, we believe that health clubs and gyms are more than simply places to workout, they are mini-communities where people come together to share a healthy common interest. They are  retreats from urban stress -- places where Members can relax and rejuvenate. And in every community there are rules of etiquette--basic manners that make the experience of the community a pleasant one for all involved.  We are in a wonderful business where everything we do is positive--even more so when our Members have the camaraderie of friendship and kindness. The following are some guidelines to help a wonderful environment be even better.
  • Allow fellow members to work-in when doing multiple sets.
  • Wipe down the equipment with a towel or gym-wipes when finished.
  • Observe a time-limit (usually 30 minutes) when others are waiting for cardio equipment.
  • Understand that the spot you prefer in the group exercise studio is not "owned" by you for every class.
  • Return weights and other equipment to the proper place when finished in a quiet and orderly manner.
  • Wear appropriate workout attire. Clothing that exposes the front or the back is unacceptable.
  • Refrain from yelling across the gym or using profanity of any kind.
  • Abstain from cell phone usage while in the gym. A long one-way conversation is distracting and irritating to the members working out around you.  Use the vibration mode if you are expecting an important call.
  • Dispose of towels, newspapers and magazines properly.
  • Refrain from wearing heavy perfume or cologne.
  • Be on time for classes. Try not to enter when a class is in progress.
  • Follow the instructor's routine in a class. Don't decide to do your own thing.
  • Always be considerate of another gym member's exercise space.
