Religiosity vs. The Living God
While on holiday at the shore, I read a classic (at least a classic for an Episcopal Priest) The Christian Priest Today by Michael Ramsey former Archbishop of Canterbury. The book is a collection of addresses he gave to those preparing for ordination in the Church of England. Covering topics such as calling, prayer, preaching, teaching, humility, obedience, politics, doctrine, and discipline, Ramsay gives thoughtful insight into the ministry of the ordained. But, even more so he offers wise counsel for lay and ordained people who come together in this great incarnational community known as the Church. How do we fulfill God's vision for us and the world?
One most needed reminder and striking challenge came when he quoted F.D. Maurice, words written over a century earlier, "We have been dosing our people with religion, when what they need is not that but the living God." (p. 20) So often the Church can get caught up in the theoretical black hole of religiosity and completely lose sight of God. Our world will not be healed by "religion", but by an encounter with the living God. I am not saying to do away with religion, but rather I want remind us of the subtle seduction of religiosity and to encourage us to be faithful and intentional in how we live out our faith as individuals and together as the Body of Christ, the Church.
We must continual ask ourselves, "Where is the living God in all of this?" Being good Episcopalians doesn't mean much if we are not grounded in a deep and abiding relationship with God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
In Christ, Paul+

This Sunday is Hunger Sunday
This Sunday we will be taking up the monthly collection for the Trinity Hunger Fund; envelopes will be in the pews.
The Hunger Fund has both a local and global outreach as it supports the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, Mercer Street Friends Food Co-Op, Bread for the World and the Episcopal Relief & Development. Hunger haunts us both at home and abroad and through your generosity we are able to provide assistance to Agencies that directly give food to the hungry people and to Agencies that are working to address the causes of global hunger and poverty. Thank you for your contributions.

Visiting Villages in Malawi in Partnership with the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance
Trinity Outreach has made a three year $45,000 commitment to support the people of Malawi through a partnership with Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA). To better understand the needs of Malawians and the impact of our support, Trinity parishioners Ruth Thurmond Scott, Julie Denny and Deborah Agnew will travel there for a two-week mission trip on July 5th. In Malawi, they'll join a number of GAIA staff and Trustees. While in Malawi, Ruth, Julie and Deborah will visit a number of GAIA supported projects and villages including Nkunguza, the village Trinity has adopted. They're taking medicines, toys, soccer balls, and school supplies (thanks to Trinity parishioners) for the children of all villages they visit and expect to see some of the mobile clinics, visit orphanages and schools, meet the village headman of Nkunguza, play with the children-there are 413-of the village and learn about the life and culture of this small, impoverished and beautiful country. They'll visit Mvuu Camp in Lilongwe National Park and also the large Lake Malawi before returning home with photographs and stories to share with Trinity parishioners. Please keep GAIA, Ruth, Julie and Deborah in your prayers as they head off on this adventure.

Return Trip to El Salvador together with Parishioners from St. Peter's Church, Phoenixville, PA
As part of Trinity's partnership with Cristosal, a group will return to El Salvador from July 7-14. Theo Block, Christian Cooper, Diane Paulsell, the Reverend Jenny Replogle and Trisha Thorme will travel with several parishioners from St. Peter's in Phoenixville, another energetic Cristosal parish. Half of the group are young people and making connections between the US and Salvadoran youth is a special focus of the trip. We'll visit schools and meet with youth councils in our partner communities. We'll also meet with youth leading efforts to block a proposed mining operation that would contaminate the entire country's groundwater supply. Return visits to communities our El Salvador team saw last year will allow the group to judge the impact of the Community Development program Trinity has been funding. We are looking forward to seeing the people whose stories touched our hearts and helped us grow in faith.

Trinity Parishioners Set to Embark on Mission Trips to Malawi and El Salvador
The Outreach committee wishes a hearty "bon voyage" to our international mission travel groups this summer. Both groups are financing their own travel (and taking time away from work and their families!) to represent Trinity Church's international outreach efforts. Please hold them in your prayers as we wish them safe travels. We can't wait to hear their stories when they return! Follow their adventures on the trip blog!

Help the Rummage Team on Fridays... ...and Keep Cool!

Your Donations = Financial Support for Outreach! Fewer donations = Less Financial Support
Thanks to your donations and volunteer efforts, the Spring Rummage Sale on April 27-29 raised more than $29,000 -- an all-time high in recent years! Now, the drive for the Early Bird Holiday Sale has begun and we are asking for your donations so the traditional Fall Rummage Sale on Friday/Saturday October 26/27 will be equally successful. We need clothing (especially winter) for all tastes, ages and sizes, kitchenware and household goods, electronics, linens, small furniture, books and toys, and works of art. Highlights of the Early Bird Holiday Sale include gifts and decorations and the boutiques of clothes for women and men. During the Summer as you go through closets and drawers, clean out the garage or might be "down sizing", please think of Trinity Rummage and help make the Fall Sale a success! Donations are accepted 24/7 and can be left on the bench outside Pierce Hall. Donation receipts are available at the Reception Desk during church office hours. Thank you from the Rummage Committee

16th Annual Icon Workshop The Prosopon School of Iconology ( www.prosoponschool.org) will hold its 16th workshop at Trinity Church, from July 15th through July 20th. Students will create icons using the same techniques and materials that have been used for nearly two millennia, and will be introduced to the underlying theology and symbolism. Previous artistic experience is helpful but not required, as icon 'writing' is as much a form of contemplative prayer as a sacred art form. This year's workshop will once again be taught by Vladislav Andrejev, founder of the Prosopon School, with assistance from Trinity parishioner and workshop coordinator, Maureen McCormick. For more information and the registration form, click here. The deadline to register is June 6th.

Downsizing or Moving?

Or, just cleaning out closets and drawers? Please remember Trinity's two annual Rummage sales that benefit Trinity's Outreach Programs. Donations are welcomed 24/7 on the bench outside Pierce Hall with receipts available at the Reception Desk down the hall. Rummage is putting out the call for cold weather items for its "EARLY BIRD HOLIDAY SALE" on October 26-27 -- coats and jackets, sweaters/sweat shirts and boots in good condition -- in addition to clothing for all ages and sizes, better housewares that will make affordable holiday gifts, costume jewelry, and stylish clothing for women and men that will be a hit at any holiday party!

Trinity Companions
Trinity's ministry to residents of Merwick Nursing Home has been rekindled, thanks to a number of you who have responded to the Outreach Committee's plea. Already, we hear of the pleasure that these visits bring to people who need companionship and conversation. The number of residents who attend the monthly Eucharist Service has greatly increased. The staff on the floor tell us that our visits have made a huge difference; we see it in the faces of the people we greet. Our visits to residents have been made during the day and early evening, privately in residents' rooms or in the dining room where all gather. We encourage visitors to briefly record their visits in a loose-leaf notebook at the front desk so as to inform other visitors about who was visited and when. Please let us know, if you have not already done so, of your interest in joining Trinity Companions. So far, the following wonderful people have become involved: From the Altar Guild, we thank Mary Alden and Donna Laessig. We thank those who have already volunteered to be companions: Loretta Cooper, Dulcie Bull, Judy Lowry, Leanne Gentile, Robin Gilbert, Thalia Mingo and Don Mann. We thank any of you who would still like to join Trinity Companions. You will find this ministry very rewarding
