"Ubuntu"
Dear Friends,
This past week I began reading God has a Dream: A Vision of Hope for Our Time by Desmond Tutu. (This is our "One Book" for the Diocese of New Jersey, check out the blog One Book Blog) Of the many beautiful images Tutu offers us in his wonderfully accessible and yet poignant way is the notion of "ubuntu". "You know when ubuntu is there, and it is obvious when it is absent. It has to do with what it means to be truly human, to know that we are bound up with others in the bundle of life." (p.26)
We live with the false belief that we are independent. "The 'self-made' man or woman is really an impossibility." (p.25) We pride ourselves on self sufficiency. The power and autonomy of the individual denies our true self. Tutu points out that at the heart of creation is to be in relationship. We are made to live in community, not in isolation. He shares the African idiom, "A person is a person through other persons." (p.25)
We need to remind ourselves of this essential truth that to be truly and fully human is to be in intimate and life giving relationship with others. We at times are so scared of being seen as overly dependent that we miss the life giving truth of interdependence. Tutu writes, "The world is going to have to learn the fundamental lesson that we are made for harmony, for interdependence. If we are ever truly to prosper, it will only be together." (p.28)
All for one and one for all! (Tutu didn't say that.)

Introducing Trinity's Newest Ministry:
The Prayer Shawl Ministry
Prayer shawls wrap, enfold, comfort and give solace to people who are dealing with illness, surgery or grief.
We are calling all knitters and wannabes to come join old friends and new friends at our monthly prayer shawl knit-a-thons held in members' homes. All are welcome who would enjoy knitting these easy therapeutic patterns, infusing your own prayers for recovery as you knit and then taking the shawls to the clergy for blessing before delivery.
We are asking and begging the congregation for names of anyone in the hospital or sick at home who might be comforted by receiving a cozy shawl accompanied by a card with a reading such as:
Every lovingly crafted stitch contains a special prayer,
That God will send his peace to you and keep you in his care.
Knitting Instructions:
- 3 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun Yarn - Michael's or Walmart
- Size 11 or 13 needles. Round needles work really well.
- Cast on 54, 57, 60 or 63 stitches or some multiple of 3.
- Knit 3, purl 3 to end of row.
- Turn and knit the purl and purl the knit.
- If you have 57 or 63 stitches, you'll begin every row with knit.
- A weave pattern will develop. Knit about 2 and 2/3 skeins in pattern. Use the rest of yarn for fringe. The fringe can be as short as 3 inches or as long as 8 or 9 inches. It's up to you.
We suggest that you knit prayers into your shawl as you knit. Many gather for a collective blessing of the shawl before it is given away. There is no right or wrong way to knit or create these mantles of love and care. Come join us!

We raised over $800 in our second El Salvador Benefit Breakfast and really helped in reaching our fundraising goal for Foundation Cristosal for this year. We were very pleased to have Noah Bullock, executive Director of Foundation Cristosal speak to us at the breakfast to give us an update on all the communities they serve in El Salvador. Trinity Outreach is committed to raising funds for relief efforts and ongoing aid to Foundation Cristosal and will have another breakfast coming soon.

Be a One Table Café Sponsor
We are now in the season of Lent and for many of us that means giving up something we like or giving up something which causes us pain - moving on and forgetting. Perhaps this year, however, the Lenten season could mean doing something good for someone else or for many others - doing something for the greater good of our community.
Gathering together to ensure a common good for our community is what Trinity's One Table Café is all about. One Table has recently celebrated its first anniversary and is proud of its success. As a result of that success, One Table is now hosting lunches on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's of most weeks, as well as our Friday night dinner on the 3rd Friday of each month.
To be able to continue those meals and to do something for the greater good of our community, we need your support. Please consider becoming an underwriter or sponsor for a One Table event. We have many levels of support and you can always partner with a friend or colleague. The underwriting levels are as follows:
- Major donor: $1,000.
- Lunch sponsor: $500.
- Table sponsor: $100.
- Fixed cost sponsor: $25 - $99.
We also have specific underwriting goals (tangible objects needed primarily to make life in the kitchen more efficient).
As our Curate, Jennifer Replogle said, "something miraculous happens when we break bread and share it." Help us to break bread and share it with others in our community and think of doing something different for Lent this year, your support will make a difference.

Darrell L. Guder is the Henry Winters Luce Professor of Missional and Ecumenical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. His many publications include "The Continuing Conversion of the Church" (2000), "The Incarnation and the Church's Witness" (2000), and "Be My Witnesses" (1983,2003). His translations from the German of Otto Weber's "Foundations of Dogmatics" and, with his wife Judith, of Karl Barth's "A Theology of the Reformed Confessions" are seminal landmarks in reformed dogmatics. An internationally-renowned lecturer and distinguished scholar of missional and reformed theology, Professor Guder earned his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg, Germany.

 Bishop Councell's Visitation May 13 Adults interested in Confirmation, Reception, or Reaffirmation
Bishop Councell will be joining us at Trinity Church on May 13 for a visitation to include the rites of confirmation, reception and reaffirmation. GAIA-Trinity Partnership: Mkanda Mobile Health Clinic Fourth Quarter Report
This fourth quarter 2011 report is informative and provides an update on the medical care assisted by Trinity in Malawi. We encourage you to read the report to appreciate the activities on the ground, including intriguing metrics (page 5), observations of patients visits, and new challenges.
"New Challenges"
As a consequence of the global recession, the Malawian government's ability to care for its citizens has been compromised. Previously the government made basic medicines (antibiotics and antimalarials) available through government-sponsored clinics. However, a shortage of foreign currency means that government-run clinics are not able to supply these medications. In some areas government clinics lack HIV test kits and antiretrovirals are being rationed on a two-week rather than monthly basis. We are monitoring the situation closely to see if any of our MHC clients experience difficulty accessing their ARV medications, and if so, we will work with the District Health Office to resolve the issue." Let's Do Lunch at Trinity's Popular One Table Café
Beginning Monday, Jan. 30, the One Table Cafe will be open for lunch from 12 noon-1:00pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (with a few exceptions). Just like our monthly dinner program, this is a "pay-what-you-can" restaurant. Besides visiting yourself, and encouraging friends, co-workers, and neighbors to come, you may want to volunteer. Please consider this valuable ministry if you are available from 10:45am till 2:00pm on any of the dates listed here. You can volunteer to come for one day, or on a more regular basis. Got Summer Plans?
Consider a Mission Trip to El Salvador
Trinity Outreach is considering another mission trip to El Salvador in summer 2012. The trip would likely be for 7-8 days, including 2 travel days and would be coordinated by our mission partner Cristosal. The trip will involve visiting communities that are working with Cristosal on a variety of community development projects. Families with teens age 16 or older are especially welcome! Estimated cost is $1200-$1500 per person, including airfare, lodging, food, and transporation while in El Salvador. Trinity Companions
Trinity's ministry to residents of Merwick Nursing Home has been rekindled, thanks to a number of you who have responded to the Outreach Committee's plea. Already, we hear of the pleasure that these visits bring to people who need companionship and conversation. The number of residents who attend the monthly Eucharist Service has greatly increased. The staff on the floor tell us that our visits have made a huge difference; we see it in the faces of the people we greet.
Our visits to residents have been made during the day and early evening, privately in residents' rooms or in the dining room where all gather. We encourage visitors to briefly record their visits in a loose-leaf notebook at the front desk so as to inform other visitors about who was visited and when. Please let us know, if you have not already done so, of your interest in joining Trinity Companions.
So far, the following wonderful people have become involved: From the Altar Guild, we thank Mary Alden and Donna Laessig. Lenten Icon Workshop
Maureen McCormick, Trinity parishioner and long-time student of the Prosopon School of Iconology, will offer a workshop for beginning students of the ancient sacred art of iconography. Each student will complete an icon of St. Michael the Archangel using the same natural materials and techniques as have been used for centuries: carved wood boards prepared with gesso made from chalk and glue, finely ground clay, pure gold leaf, and ground mineral pigments in an emulsion made from egg yolk. As iconography is a spiritual discipline as much as a sacred art, the underlying theology and symbolism of the icon will be equally emphasized. Previous artistic experience is helpful but not necessary. The workshop will consist of seven Tuesday evening sessions, plus two Saturdays. Step-by-step instructions and all necessary materials will be provided. For more information, click here.
