Why be reasonable?
For Christmas I was given A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix, by Edwin H. Friedman. The book is filled with notions that challenge me on many levels. Early in the book, one such notion that struck a chord was Friedman's belief that having an "unreasonable faith in 'being reasonable'" puts a leader and the group s/he leads at risk. Sometimes we need not to be reasonable.
How many times have you heard someone say, "Let's be reasonable." Or, "You're not being reasonable." Why are we so concerned with being reasonable? There are times not to be reasonable, but rather bold and outrageous. There are times to simply do what must be done, even when it's not the "reasonable" thing, the "popular" thing, nor the "prudent" thing, but it's simply the right thing to do.
Our faith at its essence and core is NOT reasonable. There's nothing reasonable in the bold and prophetic story of Holy Scripture. There's nothing reasonable about death on a cross and resurrection to new life. There's nothing reasonable about the call to follow Jesus as Lord. Our faith calls us to put our faith in an outrageous and unreasonable Savior. Our world will not be transformed into a fuller vision of the Kingdom of God by reasonable faith and reasonable leaders and reasonable actions.
Do we have the nerve? Do we dare? I'm afraid we are all too often held captive by our failure of nerve and our need to play it safe and be "reasonable". God give us the courage and strength to be "unreasonable" Christians, to be bold and prophetic people of faith in a world where far too many are held captive by a "reasonable" faith of playing it safe.

Thanks to your donations and volunteer efforts, the Early Bird Holiday Sale last October raised $16,000 - no small feat on an unexpected snowy day! At the conclusion of that sale, some donations were saved for future rummage sales while the rest were donated to charities to help those in need. Now, the drive to April has begun and we are asking for your donations so the traditional Spring Rummage Sale on Friday/Saturday April 27/28 will be equally successful. We need winter and summer clothing for all ages and sizes, kitchenware and household goods, electronics, linens, small furniture, books and toys. Highlights of the spring sale include the traditional Boutique of antiques and other special items, fashions boutiques, and works of art, jewelry, electronics, linens and toys. As the time for "Spring Cleaning" approaches, we hope you will think of Trinity Rummage and help make the Spring Sale a success! Donations are accepted 24/7 except for the week before Easter and can be left on the bench outside Pierce Hall. Donation receipts are available at the Reception Desk during church office hours. Send a Singing Valentine...
...and help send the Choir to England!
The choir teens will come in trios or quartets to your home, office, or the restaurant of your choice on Valentine's Day (Tuesday, February 14th), to serenade your special someone.They'll sing a medley of love songs both modern and from days gone by, so your loved one is sure to be delighted.
The choir is planning a 2013 tour to England, where they will be in residence and sing Evensong service for a week at both St. Paul's Cathedral in London and Lincoln Cathedral. What a wonderful opportunity!This event is the first of a number of fundraising efforts the choir will be conducting to make the trip possible.
Not only will your tax-deductible donation of $50 or more help make it possible for Trinity's choir to sing at these magnificent English cathedrals, but you are bound to score major Valentine's Day points with your Valentine!

Urgent Need for Help at Crisis Ministry this Saturday, Jan. 28 & Sunday Jan. 29
Carolyn Biondi, Executive Director at Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton has requested help this weekend to move food at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg. This is Crisis Ministry's temporary location because of the recent fire. A LOT of food has been donated since the fire and it needs to be organized and shelved.
Ann Zultner is coordinating the effort and is asking for volunteers for Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers will meet at the Trinity Church circle on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to go to Trenton and be back by 5:00 p.m. And Sunday, volunteers are asked to meet at 3:30 at the Trinity Church circle and back by 6:30. Let's Do Lunch at Trinity's Popular One Table Café
Beginning Monday, Jan. 30, the One Table Cafe will be open for lunch from 12 noon-1:00pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (with a few exceptions). Just like our monthly dinner program, this is a "pay-what-you-can" restaurant. Besides visiting yourself, and encouraging friends, co-workers, and neighbors to come, you may want to volunteer. Please consider this valuable ministry if you are available from 10:45am till 2:00pm on any of the dates listed here. You can volunteer to come for one day, or on a more regular basis. Consider a Mission Trip to El Salvador
Trinity Outreach is considering another mission trip to El Salvador in summer 2012. The trip would likely be for 7-8 days, including 2 travel days and would be coordinated by our mission partner Cristosal. The trip will involve visiting communities that are working with Cristosal on a variety of community development projects. Families with teens age 16 or older are especially welcome! Estimated cost is $1200-$1500 per person, including airfare, lodging, food, and transporation while in El Salvador. Trenton Area Soup Kitchen Done-in-a-Day Volunteer Opportunity Monday, January 23, 2012 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Over the years Trinity Church has supported Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK), http://www.trentonsoupkitchen.org with financial donations from the Hunger Fund collections as well as donations of the volunteer work by Trinity parishioners. Presently, we are seeking six volunteers to fulfill Trinity's commitment to assist at the soup kitchen. We have upcoming dates to volunteer on April 23, September 24, and October 29 in 2012 and will post reminders as those dates approach. - Location: 72 ˝ Escher Street, Trenton. We expect to arrange carpools from Trinity.
- Hours: On location from 10:00 am-1:00 pm
- Tasks: Assist on the serving line and at the condiment/wrap to go table.
If you are available for January 23, please consider this done-in-a-day effort. Individuals, families, including children at least 13 years of age are welcome. "Praying Our Story"
Lenten Retreat at Grace-St. Paul's, Mercerville
Our Holy Scriptures are filled with stories of ordinary people living their
ordinary lives and finding themselves met there by a covenant God of
unconditional love. Their experiences shed light on ours. For that to
happen, we have to be present to our day-to-day moments, expect that God will show up, and cultivate a heart aware of and ready to notice God's love at work in our experiences. This retreat morning will offer specific guidance toward finding God as vibrantly alive in our own real-life stories:

Lenten Icon Workshop
Maureen McCormick, Trinity parishioner and long-time student of the Prosopon School of Iconology, will offer a workshop for beginning students of the ancient sacred art of iconography. Each student will complete an icon of St. Michael the Archangel using the same natural materials and techniques as have been used for centuries: carved wood boards prepared with gesso made from chalk and glue, finely ground clay, pure gold leaf, and ground mineral pigments in an emulsion made from egg yolk. As iconography is a spiritual discipline as much as a sacred art, the underlying theology and symbolism of the icon will be equally emphasized. Previous artistic experience is helpful but not necessary. The workshop will consist of seven Tuesday evening sessions, plus two Saturdays. Adult Education Class: Reflections on the Book of Job
Sundays at 10:00 a.m. in the Library
Starting this Sunday, January 15
Please join Summerlee Staten, our PTS adult education seminary intern, for a 14-week class focusing on the first 14 chapters of the Book of Job. This class will consider the theological implications of Job as well as the various works of art that have been influenced by the book. Utilizing film, visual art, music and drama, the class will consider how the church has interpreted the story of Job and how this deeply philosophical text can still speak to us today. This class begins next week on Sunday, January 15 at 10:00am in the Library.

Epiphany Conversations
Sundays through Epiphany
Beginning on January 8th - the first Sunday after the Epiphany - Dick and Juliana McIntyre Fenn will lead a series of five conversations about the many facets of Epiphany.
Epiphanies are turning points when we see ourselves, others and the world around us in a new light... or when we come into a deeper sense of our connection with others or with the cosmos. Epiphanies may also turn us to enter into a new way of life.
We will invite participants to explore various Biblical accounts and to share their personal experiences of such revelatory moments.
Conversations will take place in the Thomas Room during the Forum Hour: 10:15 - 11:00.

 Searching For The Light Illuminating Us All Epiphany Conversations
In addition to Epiphany conversations led by Dick and Juliana Fenn on Sunday mornings, a different program will be offered on Monday evenings:
SEARCHING FOR THE LIGHT ILLUMINATING US ALL ALONG: CONVERSATIONS on PARADOX during EPIPHANY
CONVERSATIONS: verbal discourse, dialogue or discussion
PARADOX: a claim that two apparently contradictory items are simultaneously true; unanswerable questions or difficult puzzles often leading to deeper truths.
EPIPHANY: the season of the Church year following Christmas that emphasizes Christ as the Light of the world, and focuses on themes of mission and ministry by highlighting stories of Jesus' teaching, preaching and healing.
From John's Gospel..."In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God...In him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." (John 1: 1, 4-5)
From Mother Teresa..."I have found the paradox that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love."
"Conversations on Paradox during Epiphany" will explore various aspects of the theme of light by using scripture and our own experience of paradox as the "content" for our discussions.
Reflections will also include theme-related art, music and poetry.
For example, what do we know about losing in order to gain; dying so that we may live; seeing the cross as the gateway to life; watching the humble being exalted and the exalted being humbled; accepting the easy yoke of Jesus and knowing that his burden is light; entering the narrow gate of God's will which is a threshold to a spiritually expansive life.

Children and Youth Ministry Committee needs members!
Are you interested in the formation of the children and youth of this parish? If so, The Revs. Sarah and Jenny invite you to join the Children and Youth Ministry Committee, which meets monthly after church. This committee prays for our children and youth, selects curriculum to be used in Sunday School, plans fellowship, worship, and educational activities, brainstorms ways to support parents, and more!

A Small Volunteer Commitment can make a Big Difference at Merwick.
The Outreach Committee requests you consider to volunteer for a creative ministry to the residents of Merwick-a nursing home that has long been associated with Trinity Church. Originally the residence of the Right Rev. Paul Matthews, Merwick was donated to Princeton Hospital after his death and converted into a nursing home. For several decades, Merwick's residents have received pastoral care at the hands of our clergy and the chaplains of Princeton Hospital.
As you know, the Hospital plans to move to its new facility on the Plainsboro Road, just north of Princeton. Merwick's home on Bayard Lane has been sold. Its residents were moved during the fall to a new facility opposite the new Hospital on the Plainsboro Road. No longer is Merwick a "child" of Princeton Hospital receiving pastoral services such as worship and Bible Study. Its new location is beyond walking distance for seminarians and university students who used to make frequent visits and Merwick now suffers an isolation previously unknown.
The "old" Merwick had its drawbacks, to be sure, but the residents were close to one another and to the clergy and lay ministers who served them. Their new home is squeaky clean with state of the art equipment, but it still lacks the very thing that the residents most desire: spiritual companionship offered by such people as you and me in the form of a visit, a prayer, some news of the outside world, reading aloud, etc. They and we invite you share in their ministry to one another, to the people who care for them and to those whom they pray for beyond the walls of their Merwick home.

Women @ the Well is a group of women who gather to discuss books, ideas, and their spiritual lives. We meet weekly from noon to 1:30 pm in Flemer Library. Our current book selection is "In the Sancttuary of Women" by Jan Richardson. We have a few extra copies that are in Annie Thomas' office and available for $15.
