FIRE AT CRISIS MINISTRY!
Your help is needed! Crisis Ministry Logo

Dear Friends,

Early Friday morning fire broke out in the food pantry at the Crisis Ministry in Trenton.  Though fire fighters were able to get the fire under control within an hour, the damage to the food pantry was extensive.

The Crisis Ministry needs our help NOW!  Two things needed most at this time are financial support and items to restock the pantry.

To make a financial contribution you can either go online thecrisisministry.org or you can write a check to Trinity Church noting Fire at Crisis Ministry in the memo line.

To restock the pantry, the following items are needed most:

- Canned proteins (tuna, salmon, chicken, chili), shelf-stable milk (like Parmalat), peanut butter, canned potatoes, cans of Fruit (low-fructose), hot cereal (oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat), honey (plastic container) and small/medium boxes of cold cereal.

- 1-2 lb. boxes of pasta; boxed macaroni and cheese;, 2 lb.  bags of rice; 1 lb. packages of dried beans

- Toothbrushes and toothpaste; shampoos and conditioners, razors and shaving cream; soaps and lotions, feminine products.

WE WILL BE COLLECTING ITEMS TOMORROW AT ALL SERVICES!

For additional information about the fire and how you can help, please visit the links listed below.

Please keep the staff and volunteers of the Crisis Ministry in your prayers, as well as, the thousands of families to whom they minister.

Blessings in this holy season,
Paul+

PS -  We're close, BUT WE'RE NOT THERE YET.  WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!!  Thank you to all those who have pledged their support to Trinity for 2012!  If you have not made a pledge, please do so!  Our work in vitally important and we need your help! IT TAKES ALL OF US!

Staff Christmas GiftChristmas tree with gifts

Parishioners have asked if they could express their appreciation to the parish staff at Christmas. After discussing the matter with Paul, I think that what would be most appreciated is a little extra cash.

Parishioners who would like to join this effort should send gifts by check marked "staff Christmas" to Elly or put them in the offering plate. Many small gifts will make a nice gesture. Please get your gift in before Christmas.

We are blessed with a dedicated and hardworking staff that deserves our thanks-and a check is a supplement to, and not a substitute for, a heartfelt "Thank you."

Sung Compline: a Perfect pre-Holiday Devotion

Sunday, December 18

7:00 p.m.

As one of the most calming forms of worship, Trinity's monthly sung Compline will again salve our spirits.

Starting at 7:00 p.m. this Sunday, December 18, and lasting approximately one-half hour, Compline is come-as-you-are with neither homily nor collection.

Our freshly green-ed Church is lit by candlelight.  The air is rich with incense.   And our choir's beautiful harmonies and sung prayers combine for a "sensory best" of our Church's centuries-old traditions.

It's Christmas week at Trinity, and Compline this Sunday will be a wonderful front door.   Please come by.

Trinity has installed a new Hearing Aid Loop

 Hearing Aid Loop Logo

Trinity has installed a hearing loop system for people who wear hearing aids. This loop transmits sound directly into most newer hearing aids. A New York Times article  says 2/3 of all hearing aid users can take advantage of a hearing loop. Many don't know their hearing aids have this capability, and some user will have to turn on a "T-coil" switch on their hearing aid. The system works in the left front pews of the nave.

If you have a hearing aid, please take advantage of this great tool next Sunday!

Epiphany Conversations

Beginning January 8th

Beginning on January 8th - the first Sunday after the Epiphany - Dick and Juliana McIntyre Fenn will lead a series of five conversations about the many facets of Epiphany.
Epiphanies are turning points when we see ourselves, others and the world around us in a new light... or when we come into a deeper sense of  our connection with others or with the cosmos. Epiphanies may also turn us to enter into a new way of life.

We will invite participants to explore various Biblical accounts and to share their personal experiences of such revelatory moments.

Conversations will take place in the Thomas Room during the Forum Hour: 10:15 - 11:00.

Princeton Public Library, 65 Witherspoon St.

Sunday, January 29

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Free and open to the public

This humorous and award-winning documentary, directed by Shira and Yoav Potash, follows the couple as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet within a budget of a $1.00 per meal (per person), the approximate amount of food stamp benefits for low-income Americans. Along the way, the filmmakers consult with members of Congress, food justice organizations, nutrition experts and people living on food stamps. For more on the film, visit  www.foodstamped.com. Panel discussion and Q&A will include the film's directors via Skype, Julia Hicks de Peyster, a former Princeton resident and graduate of Princeton University ('86), who attempted to feed her family of five on the allotted food stamp budget for forty days, and the Crisis Ministry's Hunger Prevention Director Mark Smith. Moderator will be Liz Cohen of Yes We CAN! Food Drives, which supports the Crisis Ministry. Donations of fresh produce will be gratefully accepted at the door for distribution to the Crisis Ministry's pantries. For more on the Crisis Ministry:  www.thecrisisministry.org.

Ongoing Announcements
In Need of Action at Present

A Small Volunteer Commitment can make a Big Difference at Merwick.

The Outreach Committee requests you consider to volunteer for a creative ministry to the residents of Merwick-a nursing home that has long been associated with Trinity Church. Originally the residence of the Right Rev. Paul Matthews, Merwick was donated to Princeton Hospital after his death and converted into a nursing home. For several decades, Merwick's residents have received pastoral care at the hands of our clergy and the chaplains of Princeton Hospital.

As you know, the Hospital plans to move to its new facility on the Plainsboro Road, just north of Princeton. Merwick's home on Bayard Lane has been sold. Its residents were moved during the fall to a new facility opposite the new Hospital on the Plainsboro Road. No longer is Merwick a "child" of Princeton Hospital receiving pastoral services such as worship and Bible Study. Its new location is beyond walking distance for seminarians and university students who used to make frequent visits and Merwick now suffers an isolation previously unknown.

The "old" Merwick had its drawbacks, to be sure, but the residents were close to one another and to the clergy and lay ministers who served them. Their new home is squeaky clean with state of the art equipment, but it still lacks the very thing that the residents most desire: spiritual companionship offered by such people as you and me in the form of a visit, a prayer, some news of the outside world, reading aloud, etc. They and we invite you share in their ministry to one another, to the people who care for them and to those whom they pray for beyond the walls of their Merwick home.

If you are free to engage in this ministry to members of Merwick, you will come away renewed and refreshed. Please let Sarah Jones Nelson, sjnelson@math.princeton.edu  or Ruth Thurmond Scott,  rscott@scarlettsystems.com know of your interest.  Thank you.

Adult Education Class on Genesis

Sunday, December 18

10:00 a.m.

Genesis

A Closer Look at the Beginning: Please join Summerlee Staten, our PTS adult education Seminary intern, for a 9-week class focusing on the first eleven chapters of Genesis. Taking into consideration the development of culture and religion in the ancient Near East, we will explore how the first chapters of the Hebrew Bible may have been understood in ancient times and how we can understand the text today. As we look at each chapter in depth, we will consider what Genesis 1-11 has to teach us about the creativity and faithfulness of God, while acknowledging various interpretations of the text through art, song and contemporary Biblical scholarship. The class will start on Sunday, September 25 in the library at 10:00am.
